I am so sick of always smelling like a burp cloth. :(

DS has always been a kid who would spit up after each bottle but in the last two months or so he stopped just spitting up immediately after the bottle. He usually waits about an hour and then spits up 3-4 times usually all over ME!

The doctor thinks he is fine (just spits up some and hopefully will outgrow in by the time he goes to college  ) and we have made every formula change in the book and the only thing that is helping at all is the Alimentum formula which is costing us over $250/month.

I am so sick of smelling like a bottle of spoiled formula. I try to clean up the best I can but I don't own enough clothes to change everytime he spits up on me! :( It usually doesn't do any good to change because the moment I give in and change is usually when he decides to go for the big one! Can you tell that I have been spit up on quite a bit this morning and it is not even 8!!!

I got a portable steam cleaner to try to prevent more damage to my carpeting and furniture but it doesn't work real well on me!

Yes I love DS and I would not give him up for anything but I really, really, really wish he would stop spitting up so much. :(

Just had to get that out of my system....

Goofygirl....I will save you the time in posting to this thread. We all realize that this makes you glad that you don't have kids and have made the noble choice to remain childfree. I also realize that you think that I made the choice to "breed" and therefore I should have relinquished all rights to complain.

(((((((((((Hugs))))))))))))) Reminds me of a bib I got........ SPit up happens..... LOL

First I know people who have contacted the fourmula makes and gotten coupons...... Alimentum is one of the most expensive brands....... SO I would call and just ask why it is so much more expenxive and how come you never find coupons for it..... that usually works :)

Second, I keep tabs on this..... he may have reflux...... which is something that can be treated......

and lastly...... I keep large beach towels around the house....... (over the couches and chairs and near rugs etc..... so when it happens..... it will happen on them......

Good luck...... and please know your not alone in this........ and it will get better.

((((((((((hugs)))))))))))

You might want to check it out with a pediatric gastroenterologist as well as his regular pediatrician. Bobby had the same thing happening with him when he was a baby and he also had some trouble gaining weight. In our case, the pediatrician was convinced that we must not be feeding him the way we should and he never referred us to a gastroenterologist but when we ended up going, it turned out that he had Acid Reflux. We also tried several different formulas (the pediatrician never recommended alimentum) and nothing worked to stop the acid reflux until he was given two medications (I can't remember the names of the medication.)

One trick I know is to go to yard sales or second hand shops and buy some extra large mens shirts and wear them over your clothes. After a few washings you can toss them and you haven't lost much money. I used to walk around with a clean cloth diaper on my shoulder when my DS was an infant. I felt naked without it!

Luckily, my kids never did that, so I didn't have to deal with that. I can understand where you are coming from! Hope it eases up soon and you've received a couple good suggestions here. I remember pricing that Alimentum formula and remember seeing what it costs! Yikes!!

My older dd (now 11) was the queen of throwing up. You would be holding her and BAM barf all over place.
Hang in there...:D
She was allergic to milk and still drinks soy milk to this day.

My youngest DS (he's 13 now) used to spit up all the time!! It drove us nuts. But hang in there....it does finally go away!!:)

Our little DD was spit up queen too. And the Alimentum smells worse than any of the others when it comes back. It stinks when it comes out of the can. It turned out she did have Acid Reflux. First they had us try changing formulas, then adding rice cereal to her milk (a teaspoon per ounce). She was on Zantac to improve the ph in her tummy but that wasn't enough, so they added Reglan which speeds food through her system so it didn't sit and get worse. Still had trouble so they put her on Prilosec, which we had to get at a formulary pharmacy but it saved our sanity, our clothes, and her tummy. After 3 months taking it she was a zillion times better, and now has been medicine free for 3 months. She is a totally different child now (ask Milo and Mrs. Milo) and feels wonderful. She was never so slow in gaining weight that it was a cause for concern, but she clearly was growing taller faster than she was filling out. Maybe ask you pediatrician if that is a possibility?

I heard my whole life what a spitter-upper I was  and my mother's revenge was 3 children of my own who spit up all the time too. We used to wonder if DD#2 was going to be spitting up on DATES!! And I know that DS spit up at least once when he was over a year old.

As long as your son is gaining weight, I wouldn't worry about it. As far as smelling all the time...I can relate. I remember one time getting rare relaxation time in a bubble bath with a candle burning, and all I could smell was the spit up I hadn't even realized was in my hair. I love the big men's shirts idea! If only I had thought of that back then...

My friend had a nightmare time with her son that had reflux.
Have you talked to his doctor about thickining his formula with rice cereal? How about medications like Reglan and Zantac? My friend's baby was also allergic to soy which is in most rice cereals.
And why isn't your insurance company pitching in for the cost of the formula?
Good luck Becka. Most babies start to grow out of it once they start being upright more. I hope that's true for Nathan.

Becka, my son didn't stop spitting up until he was 15 months old! I really thought I was going to lose my mind! Fortunately, one day he just stopped, and that was the end of it, no reflux or anything like that. He does have some food allergies now though, and I always wonder if that had anything to do with it.

DS spit all the time, too. I used bath towels for burp pads and kept towels all over the house. Still wasn't enough but it caught 90% of it.

I know that it is hard. I really like jx3smom's idea about the cheap shirts. You can throw it off in a hurry if someone comes to the door and still be dressed.

Now...... if you could only find some rubber-lined men's shirts.......!

(I often joked about making some house clothes from plastic-lined disposable table cloths!)

Oh I can relate too. My DS had reflux. He would spit up entire bottles at a time! NO ONE would hold him after he ate except for myself and DH. DS was treated by thickening up his formula to weigh it down in his tummy. He still spit up, but not as much as before hand. He was diagnosed at one day old because he had spit up everything from his first feeding onward. He was dehydrated by the next morning and flown by Med Flight into the Floating Hospital in Boston where after many tests to rule out other things, he was diagnosed with the reflux.
After he started walking, it mostly went away, and by the time he was 15 months it was gone totally.
Good Luck.

I remember that smell well. DS didn't just spit up, he had projectile vomiting. We're talking excorist stuff here. It totally freaked out this first time mom. The good news is that they do outgrow it. :) :) :)

I hope you son gets through this phase quickly. :)

Oh I feel for you, Becka! My oldest had pyloric stenosis and my youngest had reflux.
The pyloric stenosis(most common in first born males) was cured instantly with surgery when DS was 5 weeks old. As long as the its not projectile vomitting, you shouldnt need to worry about that.
As for the reflux, I still claim going to WDW helped. ;) We tried all the tricks of keeping him sitting up, cereal in the formula, etc... but he still was pretty bad. We even had him on Zantac and that didnt seem to work. At one point his doctor wanted to put him on some medicine that could affect his heart(I forget the name now), and he needed to have an EKG before he took it. I did some research and decided against it. Finally we went to WDW when he was 8 months old. We stuck to his regular feeding schedule, but the whole first day he didnt spit up. I thought maybe the air pressure from the plane had something to do with keeping it down. But then for the rest of the trip he hardly spit up at all. We were a little lax on giving him his Zantac during that trip because we didnt always have it with us at the right time and because he was doing so so well. After the trip we stopped the Zantac and he had stopped spitting up. So, I guess the moral of the story is either he should outgrow it soon or take him to Disney World. ;)

I remember those days... I always said for the first year (or so) mom's should wear shirts made out of terry cloth becuase you become a human washcloth...

hang in there

{{{HUGS}}}Becka! You have gotten great advice here.

Becka, I remember the feeling all too well. {{{{hugs}}}}
It's just one of the things we were never told before we had kids. :)

{{{{{HUGS}}}}} I guess I was fortunate that neither one of mine did this. In fact DS was hard to even get to burp.
