This is a most interesting thread. Part of me sees what the "boss" did as savvy business deal. In effect, is that not what happened? Did he or she not enter into a business deal with Disney Resorts? She asked for a particular rate, and Disney gave it to her with the stipulation that he or she present an AP at check in. They didn't ask, and he or she didn't present it. If they would have asked, he or she would have had to pay as much as rack rate if she could not produce one. That is business. That is what we all do, we give business to Disney. WE buy the company's clothes, movies, music, television, and vacations. We pay what they ask. Nothing more, and nothing less. The deal was for an AP rate. Boss would have had to pay full rate it came to it, and boss knew that as part of the deal.
On the other hand, Disney, for many, is not and should not be completely connected to the "real world." It is, after all, just fantasy. Our imaginations made real. We expect people not to bring into this world of our creation the "negative" experiences of business. For example, saying you have an AP when you do not, or booking an AP room without an AP or the intention to get one before check in, runs counter to what we want to see and hear about people's experience with Disney. For many of us, we are connected to this fantasy world because we truly believe in the Magic. When someone, like Boss, comes in and soils it, we get uncomfortable.
What Boss did is perfectly fine for the real world...but maybe not for Disney. The example of speeding and the cop not doing anything is an imperfect, at best, analogy. WE are not talking about the law here, we are talking about an unspoken, albeit, collectively understood rule of behavior.
A better analogy would be farting on a crowded elevator. Doing so is well within your rights. But it still stinks.
Peace,
