I am in shock

at the airfares I am finding during Easter Spring break - from NY to Orlando the fares are $899 PER PERSON for non stop flights - Jet Blue does not have their prices up yet but I am sure they will match the others. Now I know they raise prices (supply and demand stuff) but $899 is OUTRAGEOUS for the same flight I took 2 weeks ago for $329 per person. And naturally the hotels raise their prices. Is anyone as outraged as I am? I guess I will have to change my departing date/time to take a non stop flight which I HOPE MIGHT be cheaper. How the heck do a husband/wife and 2/3 kids ever afford this? And I have not even thought about park ticket prices. I have been going every year at this time for the last 4 years (used to go over Thnaksgiving which is higher also) but these figures blow my mind. And with the economy as it is??? Guess I will have to put in plenty of overtime or get a second job.

Have you tried looking on Expedia or a travel site like that for flights? Give it a try, I've always found good luck with them!!

I would actually bet JetBlue will have MUCH better prices. For my Sept trip I kept looking on Contiental and they kept pricing me $350 for a late september trip! I went on JetBlue and got it for $230. The price difference stayed like that for a LONG time until the JetBlue flight started filling up. Now they're about the same. But don't give up hope!

I've been pricing thnxgvng for some time now and prices wax and wane like the market... Airlines usually release or schedule seats at the 90 day mark so they say prices are lowest 90 days to 2wks before the trip. I use bing travel or kayak.com to follow fares and they also "trend" prices so you can get a better idea of how prices have been in past and are likely to be. bing travel is good b/c they will "farecast" whether prices will drop or go up. so far my dates from NY are the highest yet so I'm freaking out a little... I just have faith that things will work out fine....:rolleyes1

What air carrier did you try? It is terrible. Try EWR instead of JFK and wait for JetBlue rates. I traveled on July 3rd couple of years ago and I booked 3 days in advance and I had to pay like $400 per person round trip. Sure prices went up but that much:scared1: Maybe it is mistake like couple of years ago flights were $10 due to error.

$899.00 per person!

Wow! Sounds typical of NY..:lmao: I live here so don't flame me-anyway, I'm sure the prices will get better as the date gets a little closer. I would check expedia, lowfares.com, cheapoair-etc. Is it a direct flight? I'm not sure why they would be that high-maybe b/c it's a busy time to travel....:confused3

Also, why not try going out of Atlantic City? You could spend a night at a casino, and the go from there. Its almost always cheaper, and its a nice little airport - I've gone out of there mamy times, and have never had a problem. Only issue with $$ is that they charge more extras for the luggage and such (including picking your seat!!!!) but its still usually less than the big boys.

for your advice. Actually I got the $899 fares from expedia and orbitz - I tried newark also - did not think to try Atlantic City - will give it a shot - and keeping my fingers crossed for Jet Blue. But you can be sure nothing will keep me from the happiest place on earth, Disney I will see you if I have to walk :):):)

I have never, ever paid a fair like that out of NYC flying anywhere in the country (or Canada for that matter). That is a crazy amount for a flight to FL, even out of NYC.

and I triple checked just in case I was seeing wrong. It's just totally nuts. I went to Hawaii and did not pay anywhere near $899 per person.

If Southwest travels that route, try them. They were pretty cheap when I booked for this December

Relax those are the real prices. They are always high when they first come out. Competetion drives prices down not up.

I was able to snag from DC to Orlando December 31st last year for $59 one way and $69 the other and prior to that the flights were $254 each way.

You have to check daily. But now it's too early.

Is driving out of the question? I am sure it would cut into your vacation time, but, WOW!, those airline prices are crazy. Not knowing how long you have, but if you could swing it, it sure would be a lot less expensive!

Well, I live in the Albany area, and many times people from here will drive down to NYC for better fares, but perhaps you'd want to consider driving up here. Southwest has several daily non-stop flights from Albany to Orlando. They're not booking into April yet, but the March fares are coming up as $330 per person roundtrip. That's still not super great and is higher than I'm used to seeing, but it's a lot better than $899, and I can't imagine the fare would go up significantly from March to April.

The Albany airport is super easy to get around in and you can leave your car in very convenient long term parking for ~$50/week (and also in shuttled not-as-convenient long term parking for even less).

You have a lot of time, though, and I'd be shocked if that $899 price didn't come down A LOT. Like you said - how could a family even afford to pay that much?! I'd be surprised if they're be selling very many tickets at that price!

:thumbsup2 or drive. I am from NY as well and if the rates will be that high I would probably just rent a car and drive. It takes 20 hours, lots of gas and 1 night to sleep on a road but still cheaper then that esp. if it is a big family.

Now you know why my family of 5 drives from Texas. Last summer, it would have cost us $2500 for our family to fly out to WDW. And that is just airfare: you haven't even gotten to the hotel, tix, souvenirs, food, etc. I would think those fares would have to come down....not many people could afford those prices in this economy, I would think.

Our prices were not as bad as yours, but we still had to pay $400.00 PP to fly from Birmingham to Orlando. I was watching the airfares last year when gasoline was so high and the prices for airline fuel went up as quickly. When gasoline prices decreased, the airlines failed to do the same. Sometimes I wish I did not love WDW so much!
