Husband lost his job

My husband has been getting a lot of 1099 work but most of the money we have to wait 60-90 days for payment.

We are there right now by choice, and its really quite painful - even though I have the savings to see it through, to see the savings get spent to get us to the point where the cash flow is positive. Like you, I crave security....and my husband really doesn't. But he was miserable in a job where he was working fifty and sixty hour weeks, now he'll work about 30 hours for as much money - provided the thirty hours come through! I've started looking for contract work - but not too seriously - we will see what hits.

Good luck. And remember that when he is doing 1099 work to 1) set aside money for taxes and 2) track expenses so you can write it off on taxes. We spent $135 to set ourselves up as an S-Corp - should save us some money in SS/FICA taxes since we only need to pay him a "reasonable" salary. I'm a little shocked at the size of the writeoff after setting up and a week of business.

Good luck to your husband and you. Can I ask you what you do for health insurance? We now have it thru the ACA and I get a subsidy but am afraid I might have to pay back -

We are going through COBRA until year end because we have a high deductible we've hit. After that, there is a Healthpartners plan - HD again - we will get. We don't think we will qualify for any subsidies however - unless he has almost no clients and I don't find anything either. He came out of his job with a client in hand (he postponed quitting until all the paperwork on the first client was signed) and has a lot of other things in the works. I did IT project management, so I don't think it will be forever until something comes my way - right now I'm being both picky and expensive - if I need to I can get cheaper and less picky - and he is more expensive than I am.

Well here we still are - we lost the 3rd step grievance - now my husband needs to find a job. We will fight it out at arbitration, but that could be a year.

I will not wine anymore, as it seems I am handling this so bad compared to others - not by choice bit it's who I am.

At this point returning to work for this employer would be only another grieve ness away from being fired again. They will make life miserable.
One concern is his attitude, is he short tempered. Most people do not file a complaint to get someone fired.
Second, his aptitude in being handy. The cable company's and security system installers are always looking for good help.

If he has great communication skills and feeling for helping customers then these installing jobs are great for him. I had a claim recently as an insurance adjuster where an indoor installer did not pick up on this returning customers anal retentive needs of no new holes, and hiding new lines.

The insurance company had to replace siding, drywall holes and paint. Additionally, reinstall the service again. Lots of openings in installation if he has great people skills.even security and fire systems.
Good luck.

No not short tempered at all. It was for a big company so he would never see this manager again. Think it was more of a personal choice on the managers part. My husband loved his job - has a great customer satisfaction rating - that's why this is so bazaar - but didn't think about alarm installations will pass that along

no i would want to avoid that..my older son is just starting hs - got into a great program - we have 4 years left on our mortgage..

Have you considered relocating? I believe you live in a high COLA area.

I hope that your husband finds something soon. I agree with a PP that said he won't want to go back to working for the same employer. Whether he is actually a great employe or someone who thinks he's great at his job, the truth is that the company sees him as not worthy of employment with them and even if the union were to get him reinstated again (hasn't he gone through this at least once before?), the company will be looking over his shoulder constantly for a reason to let him go. Who wants to work in a position where they are being constantly shadowed in the anticipation of a little slip up? :scared:

It's time to look for the open window of opportunity instead of banging on the shut door. This might be the chance to kick-start his career in a new direction! It might be difficult for a while, but keep a positive attitude for his sake. He needs to know that you support him while he pounds the pavement in search of employment.
