My husband has been getting a lot of 1099 work but most of the money we have to wait 60-90 days for payment.
We are there right now by choice, and its really quite painful - even though I have the savings to see it through, to see the savings get spent to get us to the point where the cash flow is positive. Like you, I crave security....and my husband really doesn't. But he was miserable in a job where he was working fifty and sixty hour weeks, now he'll work about 30 hours for as much money - provided the thirty hours come through! I've started looking for contract work - but not too seriously - we will see what hits.
Good luck. And remember that when he is doing 1099 work to 1) set aside money for taxes and 2) track expenses so you can write it off on taxes. We spent $135 to set ourselves up as an S-Corp - should save us some money in SS/FICA taxes since we only need to pay him a "reasonable" salary. I'm a little shocked at the size of the writeoff after setting up and a week of business.
