Hurricanes and Disney

Thank you! The uncertainty is the most frustrating. We'll have laptop with us and will monitor from Vero. If it is scheduled to get bad on the east coast and that evacuating vero is necessary. We will call DVC to get a room at SSR.

Look at the European model forecast. That one seems to be most predictable.

I wouldn't freak out. It's really going to be ok.

As for the beach, on the Atlantic side, I'd be a little more concerned over ripe tides depending on how big the storm is, width, not cat. Be mindful, stay safe. Happy Vacation.

Being from the UK i never seen a Tropical Storm or Hurricane so it it happens when we there in september its kinda of exciting to see what happens

I love watching the force and power of mother nature so to speak

We are heading to Vero Beach on Friday for 6 days. Would you change your plans? Maybe head to Orlando? .....still so much uncertainty. Any advice is appreciated! thank you!

For the past couple weeks there has been a continuous eastward movement when it comes to stormy weather here in FL. You can pull up the radar for FL and you'll see what I mean, there's a huge glob moving ENE right now. That's why I'm not too worried about the projections so far when it comes to this potential hurricane. Unless things change I don't see this thing doing anything but moving up along the coast, if it even makes the coast, and then moving out to the Atlantic. That would put places like Orlando on the west side which means it will have minimal impact. Now if it were to go up the west coast of FL then that would put Orlando on the east side which would mean mega rain and alot of wind.

Ugh, working on my back up plan today. We leave tomorrow with our return on Tuesday -- which is the day when the storm would hit according to the tracking. I hadn't planned to bring my netbook as this is a short 5 night stay. But will be bringing it now as it's easier to book additional nights, monitor Jetblue and cancellation policies, and other arrangements that I can do online. While my flight may be cancelled for my return flight, getting on another one will become a chore and could take days. I also have a backup plan to rent a car for the drive home if I can't get a flight...glad I saved my free days on National. We are set to stay longer if we have too, so will re-examine my packing today. I booked this long weekend as a relaxing trip to a very stressful summer. Oh well.

I agree with pp that the uncertainty is the hardest part. I don't know jack %&^* about weather forecasting, but I'm suddenly an armchair meteorologist. :rotfl:

What I do know for certain, is weather outlets and news media blow just about everything they cover out of proportion, always have and always will. I don't live in hurricane country, but up here, at least 75% of the "big snow storms' they predict, turn into nothing, but not until they've freaked out most of the population and have people in fear of going outside.

From what little I do know about hurricanes, it seems to me it would have to be a huge storm (cat 3/4) to have a serious impact on Orlando. They've already downgraded their intensity predictions for Isaac and if/when it does hit Florida it will likely be cat 1. And since I'm now a self proclaimed weather expert ;), my prediction is a couple days of yucky rainy/windy weather early next week.

I have to wonder if not for the GOP convention in Tampa next week, if the news would be so hot and heavy on this one already? They media would love nothing more than a to have a big news story there and even if there isn't one, they'll create it.

If you are driving be sure to fill up the vehicle with gas before the storm hits. Many times stations to not have back up generators for the fuel pumps.

I totally agree , but good luck getting these peeps to listen to you, they hear the nit wit on the oaa sponcered weather channel and think that is the word of god... people NOAA has been underfunded for like 20 years...
and they think one computer mod called the europen is what they should look at . I have tied to post the computer models so they can see that it's a complex ensomble of models, and the majority of them make up the cone of fear... but they hear that nit wit and think they have heard the truth and the light... and who the heck can blme them??? I wa sthesame way until Andrew, after that we figured out the deal pretty quick in florida... anyway, folks the best thing is to go to accuweather , go to hurricianes, click on the social tab or news tab and go t the blogs... thats how to get the best info unless you go to weather bell, but that ones not free.
I'l not comment again until after the thursday evening navy flight, and a good 24 hrs with the NOGAPS as believe it or not, nogaps seems to be looking at that eastern ridge maybe a bit better???

I don't know if you're meaning too, but you're coming off sounding a little rude. I don't think most on this thread are taking a weather forecast as gospel truth. I'm pretty sure that most quasi educated people know the media are full of crap. None of us are meteoreologists (as far as I know) and a good many of us are travelling in the next several days, so of course we're watching and worrying.

People are just worried about vacations coming up in the next few days having less than ideal conditions, which we all dream of having for our vacations. So, if some people sound a little freaked out, I think that's understandable. It doesn't mean they think the sky is falling, it just means they're a little disappointed about potential rainy days ahead.

I want it to rain next week. Peopleto with children stay inside, stay home, hunker down. I'll be in the short lines to ride rides in flip flops, board shorts and a T. Luckily my soon to be wife loves being in rain :D

i live in tampa and i am not worried about this hurricane...maybe i should be but i have been through so many hurricanes that it isn't a big deal to me anymore....BUT i have never been through any that were above a CAT 3 so then i would start to worry. if it were me going to disney i would just bring my poncho and have fun....they will not let anything happen to you and if it is bad they will close the parks i am sure.

We may see you in those lines with our 4 year old. :cool1: Just this morning, he asked me if you can still ride the rides in the rain. He has no clue about storms or anyting about Isaac, I don't need to get him all worked up about it. I did warn him that it does rain in Florida a lot in the summer though. Apparently he doesn't care, he was satisfied to know he can still go on the rides. :thumbsup2

Excellent suggestion :thumbsup2

We ususally fill up, no matter what the tank level is, right before we get off of I75. Having to buy gas in Orlando is simply too stressful even on a good day.

we have experienced hurricanes and tropical storms. we wore water shoes to the parks or keens pack a couple flashlights. games for your room if your stuck inside pack easy to dry clothes.

Sounds like you're raising a real disney fan! Good job parent (thumbs up would go here but I'm mobile)

Since we are on the topic of rain....I just pulled up the radar for central FL and all I can say is that if you are at Disney right now, you had better take something like a raincoat or poncho because in about 2 hrs you are going to be experiencing some serious liquid sunshine.

That being said, I'd rather be wet in Disney than dry here at the store.

And it does seems like so many of the real ones on TV go nuts for the hype.

That is why I try to get my information from a fella who is a private,
for profit meteorologist for business people around the globe
(you know, for people involved in commodity trading, folks who absolutely need to know
what is going to happen so they can cut their losses or stay the course).
If he wasn't accurate, they would not be paying him for his service, so he takes great care to get it right.

He provides the best, most accurate weather forecasts I have ever seen.

Anyway, you can find him at www.wxrisk.com
or if you go on facebook just search for Wxrisk and you should be able to find him.

He's watching all the models, the euro, the 0z and 6z GFS, the Canadian model,
and so much more analysis than my non-weather geek mind can possibly take in :lmao:
If you go to www.wxrisk.com right now you can bathe in the weather-ese to your heart's content... ;)
enjoy :goodvibes

PS- look for his summary in red font at the bottom of the page. You can't copy and paste it or I would have included it already...

We were at WDW during a mild tropical storm a few years back. We were at POP and our homebound flights were cancelled so we stayed 2 extra nights. We ended up moving over to WL and using DVC points rather than paying cash for extra nights at POP.

We never lost power however we were on the ground floor at WL and they sandbagged our sliding glass door. We ventured out to the parks wearing ponchos and umbrellas but they were fairly useless as the wind was blowing the rain sideways. I would have killed for my rubber rain boots (flip flops and sneakers were not cutting it in ankle deep water).

All in all, we made a grand attempt to get out and enjoy the parks during our "bonus" days but I can truthfully say this was the first time I was looking forward to going home to Vermont.

Then last year we were flooded out when Hurricane Irene hit the northeast, and then moved to FL. Now I live here and get to experience it all over again!

THIS DEFINITELY! We sat at a gas station for HOURS once during one of the hurricanes, out of gas, and no electricity for the pumps!
