Hurricanes and DCL

Florida just declared a state of emergency ... wow ... way too soon IMO

The way things are set up, they have to in order to qualify for certain federal funds ASAP.

This is normal. Just a way to move government money faster if it hits hard.

God love the government, so many procedures and no actual brain or heart

Yes. I was just replying to the person who thought it was "too early" to declare a state of emergency.

I mean, the flood waters have mostly gone down in Texas and congress has barely scratched the surface of a reaction.

As for the 9/9 cruise I'm on, Irma is headed south and her right turn looks to be straight up Florida's coast.... but it will be over Cuba when we sail, so rougher seas day one and I expect the captain can find smooth(er) seas after that.

Given there will be three storms out there by then, where we port during the cruise is anyone's guess.

I don't care where except Canada, if we go to Canada I'll pitch a fit.

Doubt Canada though, two Atlantic storms look like coast huggers so you don't want to get stuck north of the storm.

Being from Florida, I know that storms are impossible to predict.

We are scheduled to leave out of PC on Friday September 8th on the Dream for our first Disney cruise.

We were well aware of the chances we were taking booking a cruise in September in the height of hurricane season. So no complaints here but just wondering if anybody had a general idea what DCL may do if the reliable model is actually accurate which shows a strong hurricane on Friday, September 8th right outside the Bahamas which is where the cruise is going for Nassau and CC.

We are fine with just riding around for three days on the boat if the above scenario plays out but is that something DCL would do in a situation like that or just cancel cruise altogether?

See ya on the ship Friday :)

That makes sense. Still hoping she decides to go away from Florida though.

Still moving forward for the 9/9 cruise. Packing and planning and watching the weather. Where we go is anyone's guess, but don't want to go north! We fly in Thursday night.

.... 9/9. Several people have mentioned it turning into a western caribbean but going south at sail away seems less likely than anything......

..... Going straight east out into the Atlantic on Saturday may make the most sense .....

Agree regarding Fantasy Saturday 9/9 departure.

Question is can they still do a western then. Or will they do an eastern? Depends on port/island damage on eastern.

DCL will not sail south along FL into Irma.

As mentioned they will say east around the Bahamas, then ..... ? ? ?

Agree regarding Fantasy Saturday 9/9 departure.

It depended on the speed the storm moves and when it moved North. Originally it looks like it was going to follow the eastern sea board slowly and that created a window for the Fantasy to squeeze around FL before the storm got there....

That's changed, now the original route makes more sense since its moved south.

The big questions are:

How much damage will the VI sustain from Irma, and will Jose be coming through next week.

On the current track a switch to normal western is doubtful, but I wouldn't put any port out of play. Only way I see western is a modified itinerary going around Irma then heading west to avoid Jose and porting at Jamaica and Cayman.

That's a extremely unlikely scenario. Depending on damage in VI and where Jose forms and goes... you could see Fantasy run a Bahamas 7 day with maybe two stops at CC.

Anything is possible, including the original itinerary with beautiful weather between two brutal beatings for VI sandwiching our visit.

Note: if the gulf storm forms first, replace "Jose" with "Katia"

Not weather a cruise will be cancelled but rather will the ships be able to get back to port is the question.

Fantasy is at CC Friday, IRMA will be around the Dominican Republic. When Fantasy rounds the horn of FL Irma won't be anywhere near enough to make the jello at cabanas shimmy.

Fantasy should be affected by Irma. Jose may be interesting depending on its path for the 9/9 Fantasy coming back for the 9/16 sailing.

The 9/8 sailing of Dream getting back into port Canaveral 9/11? That's the sketchy one.

Btw, the next storm in the Atlantic is roughly 5 days behind Irma. If it takes the same path and that path was worst case and hit Canaveral, it would hit Friday night/ Saturday morning

Yeah, I don't think the 09/08 Dream sailing will have a problem leaving the port, its the getting back that may be an issue and then you have to consider that if the storm does hit Florida, how much damage is done that will prevent people traveling back home, especially drivers such as myself back to Pensacola. Have full faith in DCL, they will do what's best, if they are sailing, we are sailing.

UGH I can't even think that far ahead right now :( Back to back storms would be terrible. We live about 20 minutes south of PC on the barrier island. I started looking at this thread because I met a nice CM at the World of Disney store in DTD this weekend who is on the 9/11 sailing. My gut feeling is that the ship won't port here on 9/11 unless mother nature miraculously spares Brevard County. She was wondering what happens in that case...does Disney refund, partially refund, rebook...I'm honestly still not sure even after reading this thread.

There are so many variables involved, that there really is no clear-cut answer. What DCL does will depend on the path of the storm(s) as well as the location of their ships. It's possible for a delayed return which delays the start of the next cruise. It's possible to change ports (and DCL would transport). It's possible for a complete cancellation. But as of today it is too soon to determine what will happen with a 9/11 embarkation. She should plan the cruise will go as planned until more is known. If DCL cancels, she will not be out the money and she will be informed; if DCL doesn't cancel but she decides not to go, she'll need to deal with travel insurance for a claim. If she needs to travel to the PC area, she might want to pay attention to airlines and possibly move up her flight for an earlier arrival.

I live in Canada. The ports on a Canada cruise are wonderful but when you're looking for a "beach" vacation... There is room for disappointment. LOL

Also don't forget for those of you flying. The aircraft you are suppose to fly on might be stuck because it can't get to you. remember your air craft and the flight crew can be coming from 2 different locations posing a great risk of delays or cancelled flights. With Earl the ships were diverted to other ports in other states to restock supplies and were stuck out at sea for a few extra days.
