Hurricane Sandy and East Coast - anyone preparing yet?

Right now it's supposed to come in over the top of Hampton Roads ~ Sunday-Tuesday. I've heard from 10-12 inches of rain. I would keep watching the weather. The TV stations I follow on facebook are a little spooked.

I'm really not going to do too much buying until Saturday and I really don't need much. Tomorrow I will make sure all my laundry is done, housework is done, charge everything up, etc. Once I see the weather on Saturday, then I'll go get the few things i need.

We lost power for 10 days during Isabel and a tree fell on our house and we survived so we will this time, too.

I am dogsitting as well as have 2 dogs of my own...it is not going to be pretty here if we get that much rain...

DH is on a work trip staying on Chincoteague Island. This sure doesn't sound good for him! And some of the computer models have our house right in the "red danger zone" with a possible snow storm.
I am NOT happy right now.:sad2:

Which forecaster do you follow? All the ones on my newsfeed are from when we lived in Maryland, and they are posting scary stuff, but I'm guessing we aren't supposed to get that hard?
We are in the Isle of White area and pretty near the water.

I'm further inland (North Central Maryland) but according the the map below still in a danger zone. I'm not sure which night to have DD ask off work. I thought Tuesday but now I'm thinking Monday would be the better night to have her stay home. Yes, she's 17 but I really don't want her driving in a tropical storm if I can help it.)

Thanks for this. You absolutely don't want her driving. I'm near you and my son is looking at your map wondering if they'll close school at all!

I guess it's a trip to Walmart for supplies.

I follow WTKR and WVEC.

I would look up Isle of Wight city website and see if they have any information for your particular neighborhood.

Thank you!
They gave us something when we moved here about hurricanes and storm surge, but I have no idea where it is. I didn't think of checking the city's website.

I did just read something that said where it is coming in is the worst possible place for this area...we will be on the wrong side of it but much less rain predicted.

Hopefully all the preparations will be for nothing and it'll pass us by :)

Here's what our local weather man had to say on Facebook (from the Lehigh Valley, PA):
Ed here: The new GFS model just came in....and the models are coming into more alignment now. And if they verify, we will be looking at a MAJOR storm...likely historic depending on final track. We may be looking at a storm that could reshape the coastline somewhere from Maryland, Delaware, NJ up into Long Island.

Dear Lord, I hope not!

Anyone up in Bergen County NJ near Ramapo college?? DD is a freshman there. How was the area after Irene and the Halloween storm?

"Reshape the coastline"? :scared1:

Ho hum. The coastline is reshaped twice a day every day.

Hopefully all the preparations will be for nothing and it'll pass us by :)

Most likely that will be the case. It's smart to be prepared but some of the reports I'm hearing are the typical "storm before the calm" hype and scare tactics.

The current map shows the center of the storm basically coming on shore directly east of our home. We are about 4 or 5 miles, as the crow flies, from the ocean. Hoping things change. Keep telling DH it would be worth the cost of the generator to avoid all this, because we know it we buy one it will stay away from us.

That was the line that got me to, DD goes to high school out on a narrow peninsula that has become an island during past storms. Scary to think about.

I'm farther south in Bergen County, near Paramus, but it was kind of a mess here. I was VERY lucky and only lost power for a couple hours, but my friend down the street was out 6 days. School was closed(no power, no heat) for 3 days.
That was all due to the snow on trees that were still full of leaves, branches snapping under the weight and bringing the lines down with them.

My motto is "prepare for the worst and hope for the best". I always go overboard at the slightest mention of hurricane, tornado or snowstorm and luckily we've only had one bad storm. Dh is in charge of removing down trees and flooding at his work, so if it is calling for really bad weather, I'll be on my own.

A hurricane can rearrange a coastline.any natural disaster can change the way things used to look. There is a place here in Va called Willoughby Spit in Norfolk. It was made by a hurricane in 1667.I am honestly surprised another one hasn't taken it back. Be safe everyone.ugh hate being in the "cone of uncertainty".

i am getting a generator tomorrow....if we dont use it,

itll be returned....

I am in PA, that map looks like we get hit on Tuesday.

I am sorry, I have to ask, why are we filling bath tubs??? (go ahead and laugh at me, I am new to preparing for hurricanes)

With the talk of possible snow here in eastern Ohio, I guess I should get the snow tires mounted Saturday morning..just in case

To have an extra supply of water for flushing toilets (have a bucket handy, and you just dump a bucket of water in the toilet bowl to make the waste flush out of the bowl. But really, if you are on city water, you shouldn't lose water in a power outage. If you have a well, the tub full of water is a MUST. We lost power for 5 days in an ice store several years ago, and we used water from our hot tub to flush the toilets (we had a well)

Thank you!
We don't have a well so I guess that is why I never had to do that.

We moved into a house with a well recently so this is a first for us. Thanks for the bathtub suggestion. We lost power for a few hours over the summer and not having a flushing toilet with 6 of us in the house freaked me out lol
