Hurricane Matthew Closes WDW - Reopens Saturday, October 8th

I have a question....might be a silly question but im curious...where do they place the animals in AK during hurricanes/tropical storms? Obviously there's shelter. Hmmmm, maybe i'll google it. :scratchin

AK and AKL has lots of animal barns. Some animals, like some hoofed, do better in the storm as the barns are distressing.

If you ever took the train to conservation station you can see them.

You are way behind.
I get it's a long thread and moving fast.
That post was from 10:30 this morning.
Curfew was still on and was even "renewed" at 11:00 am.
The curfew has been kept up to date all day on here.

When I posted it was showing that you posted 4 minutes before I replied. Geeze.....I didn't realize this board had police to call people out.....so Jr High...

Are you here in Orlando following the local news? Curfew was for all day today up to 7 AM tomorrow, not just the evening.
This was however just lifted at 2 PM. Also 6 individuals were arrested during this period for breaking curfew and looting.

Laura
No, I am not there, I am in SW FL. Friend of mine lives there. Maybe I misunderstood her. I thought she said it was for evening.

????? You called out the post as wrong. ????

I was just stating it was correct at the time it was posted, many pages ago.

The posted times are at the bottom.

MUCH of what is being posted to keep folks up to date is copies from other sources and they may have their own times, like twitter.

Yeah I think that is what they meant... The eye passing directly over it not where it first hits land.

I think they just wanted to warn everyone due to the large population of Orlando that most are familiar with. I mean, how many would worry/care if they said Bithlo was going to be a direct hit?

Does anyone have any info yet on which eating places will be open at DS tonight? We are at SSR and are walking over for 5:30, and will just see what there is, but it would be interesting to know beforehand :)

I don't know that it's cut and dry this resort or that (or this kind or that).

Saratoga Springs (Deluxe Villa) had chip and dale taking pictures, while at CSR (a moderate) there were massive dance parties going on.

I think it's all up to who is on the Ride it Out crew. Hopefully nobody is getting grief for it, even with as little as was going on at our resort the CMs were working super hard! :)
Entertainment Ride Out teams were deployed to every resort last night. Character performers held meet and greet and dance parties and remained onsite overnight. When they were given the go ahead to head to the resort lobbies this morning, some found empty lobbies while those in Deluxes found plenty of guests to meet and enjoyed playing games with them.

When I called to cancel my Friday night arrival, they told me that if you're a no show on the first night, you need to check in by 11:00 am the next morning at the latest or they could very well cancel your whole reservation.

We are waiting out the hold now. We are in DVC but the DVC offices are closed today. They told us yesterday it would be no problem to cancel the first night of our stay and to call back when we decided. Well, we decided today and they aren't there :-)

We also did online check-in, so we are just supposed to get a text message with our room # when our room is ready. Technically we aren't supposed to even have to go the desk, but we always have in the past. As one of the other posters said, wondering about getting our points back if someone hasn't noted it on our account before tonite. But more so would hate to go through all of this and get there tomorrow and have no room!

So again just south of property and very uneventful for me.. In nyc we would have called this a thunderstorm and normal day with wind was about the same there. It braught in amazing feeling weather so I'm really looking forward to the parks this weekend to see how empty disney really is :)

For those wondering about the financial impact to Disney on all this...there won't be any. They're a huge multinational corporation and they probably carry very comprehensive insurance, including business interruption insurance. They'll be compensated for all their losses. Keeping this in mind, I do think it's incorrigible that they charged $13 for some of those boxes. Some looked fine for the price, others...yeah, not so much. For awhile, this thread really was like watching the difference between people in First Class (deluxe) vs. steerage (values & mods), but it seems like today they're leveling the playing field a bit.

Good to see that those children confined to their rooms up until now will at least be able to get out and do stuff around the resorts. I can't imagine being stuck in a value or even a moderate room with a couple of toddlers at a time like this!

Lots of reports from reliable sources. Could they be wrong, yes, but they do have connects to actual DS employees. Phone CMs are not the most reliable.

Seen some reports myself direct from employees of 3rd party places getting ready to go to work.

Again, maybe there is some misunderstanding but DS is one place that can be opened very quickly.
CM emergency line says Disney Springs will open at 5.

Perfect day to wait to get in to Trader Sam's for a Hitchhiking Ghost!

Have you never seen national/international news or weather regarding devastation from hurricanes? I mean, even with Matthew, the reports of the devastation in Haiti and impacts in Cuba and the Bahamas should be a pretty big clue what a hurricane is capable of doing.
I just don't get it. Hurricanes have been devastating cities and killing people pretty much forever, and they often make the world news when they do. How can people not know what they're capable of?

Totally agree! Bottom line is some people are planners and some people just wing it. Unfortunately, the people who wing it are the ones who complain. Everyone knows what the word hurricane means. If I came from an area that never experienced one, I would be very afraid. I would worry for my family and plan how to care for them. Not just depend on some big, money making company to do it for me.

Well, we were out and about at SSR a lot (last night and this morning) and dance parties definitely didn't happen as they've been described. this morning, even as of 11:50, they were stopping guests going into the carriage house making sure they were going in and out for something specific.

And to speak for someone else on the thread, they were under the impression (because it's what the message said) that they shouldn't leave their room.

But that's just my experience.

Thanks for the info. I've been curious...and hoping the animals stay safe. Thanks for all of your posts...your awesome! Many of us here really appreciate all that you do. :goodvibes

Personally, seeing something on TV and actually experiencing it are two totally different things. I've seen plenty of TV coverage of tornadoes and the damage they cause, I've even driven in areas that had just been hit by a tornado, but the actual experience of being in a house when a tornado ripped right over it was totally different. And I grew up in the midwest, where tornadoes are common. I think that's really what our Canadian friend was originally alluding to.

Have been watching events unfold from over here in the UK, have family on vacation in FL currently and we fly out to WDW in 10 days too! So thankful of the updates and threads on here, and that it seems (fingers crossed) the worst has passed without too much hassle for the mainland residents and vacationers. Stay safe and happy everyone :-)
