Anyone canceling their trip due to the Hurricane? Anyone know what Disney's policy is? I am a little leary of wasting $3000 sitting in the hotel room while it storms.

Any advice? I have annual passes, so I am not worried about that, but what about the hotel? I am staying at BC.
Thanks!

YOu'll be confined to your room probably no more than 24 hours. The parks will be closed probably no more than one business day's worth of hours. Being at Disney during a hurricane (less than category 5) is a unique experience that years later you probably would think back upon as positive.

This is going to be a pretty fast moving storm, and my guess is that it will last for between 10-20 hours--if it even gets near WDW--which current tracks say it probably will not. So you're looking at some rain and wind, but nothing that will cause them to close parks or confine guests to their rooms.

BTW--Most of us in the Orlando area are having a pretty good chuckle at the hysterics we're reading. It's business as usual around here folks. No one is boarding windows, there's no rush on Home Depot, plenty of gas, bread, and milk. And I haven't even heard that stupid "hunker down" phrase used by the media.

Yes, we're keeping a watchful eye, but we're not freaking out like "ya'll".

Glad you locals are getting a laugh. Some of us, myself included, have never even thought about being near a hurricane. So this is a new experience for many. And of course, many of us have a bunch of money involved, so of course not knowing anything about "suriviving a hurricane" we seem a little more concerned.

as you should be...
a couple of weeks ago we had a hurricane 45 miles off our dock in merritt island it stayed that way for 3 days we continued to have school, buisness etc.... all my family in other areas could not understand why we did not at least cancel schools.. hurricanes are pretty predictable so if it had shown a turn of course we would have been ready.. (EVERYONE rembers Frances last year where we evactaued 2 days too early and were stuck either boarded in our houses or in a hotel wasting money....)
That is why it is so confusing to me why someone would come to an area IF they are worried. I mean I am all for people coming and i tell evertyone wait another day i honestly do not think that we will know anything till friday... but if i was in a different area AND i actually had to make a statement like i guess i better bring my flashlight and stock up on food to take with me just in case??!! well to me that is just stupid why put your self in harms way if yu fel that way??? stay home and come when the danger is past...

Oh and sorry but... ALOT of us here also have money involved and jobs and houses.......

Seriously, it may not be much of a threat to those who are used to it, and it really may not be much of a threat at all.... but my concern is that I want to go on my vacation!! After planning for it, getting more and more excited, getting my plane tix and all my Disney arrangements taken care of, it's extremely disappointing to think that I might not get to go. So what's the verdict?? Looks like it will still be in central florida until Monday a.m. The time our plane is said to arrive at MCO. So will we be delayed? Should we try to take an earlier flight? Argh. I'll start making calls to find out what's going on, but I am so sad at the idea that this might not work. Thanks for any info!

Hopefully it will be a mild situation just calling for :umbrella:

ducklite - glad to see someone from clermont checking in. we have good friends that live there (and you are right about the rolling hills part. so lovely there. they live on a nice hill above one of the smaller lakes in the Lake Louisa area. you guys are getting developed like crazy there aren't you?!?!? We dream of moving there. but by the time we get there clermont may be as developed as orlando!)

i must say that my friends there are dittoing what you are saying. they are not freaking about this as much as the media is.

for the OP - i would certainly go on my vacation. depending on your travel plans, you may want to change them slightly to avoid flying during the worst of it. otherwise, i would go, have a good time while the weather allows and for the possible one day where the weather is crappy, hang tight at the resort. then when the weather breaks, get out there and enjoy the beautiful sunny weather that always follows these things. florida could use your tourisim dollars.

I live 20 miles north of Orlando. The local weather people this morning said if Wilma stays on the projected path, the Orlando area will get mainly squally type rains Saturday and into Sunday. Based on today's reports, I wouldn't cancel my trip. I think the airport will be fine - unless she makes a major course change today or tomorrow.

I guess you missed the memo that stated "Hurricane Season is June 1st-November 30th
Sorry to be blunt but your response was rude. We have tons more then "a bunch of money " at stake. We are all on a watch and see, so that's what we will do.

I am about 90 miles South West of Orlando and it is normal around here also. Yes we are all keeping our eye on Wilma but until she makes that turn we won't have a clue what she is going to do.

I am not sure what your travel dates are but I would wait and see what is going to happen in the next 24 hours before I canceled.

WDW is very prepared for these type of storms.

We will be heading to WDW tomorrow to attend MNSSHP as scheduled.

Hmm, I guess you haven't heard about the "Free house in Florida" campaign. Just another one of the unfair Florida resident discounts. :)

I'm glad all you locals are so calm. I'd be much more worried otherwise. I'm ready and willing to give LOTS of tourist dollars to Florida! Anything for the cause! :rotfl:

Sorry if my post came off rude. It's early here on the west coast. I just meant that you locals know your weather and the damage it can or can't do. It's like someone who has never seen snow go north into a possible blizzard. As a first timer, I'm just not sure what to expect. As a local, you have a better understanding of what is happening.

Of course the locals have much more money invested than little me and my vacation. But if I have the chance to avoid a bad area and recoup a little money, than I'd like to do that too.

I now bow out of this discussion. Sorry for the misunderstanding. Good luck to all those involved in this hurricane.

I had a pleasant conversation with a CM yesterday about our Wishes Cruise on Saturday night. I could tell that we had two different perspectives on the situation.

The wind and rain could be the same intensity on any other night and I would probably be eager to go. You take that same wind and rain and associated it with a hurricane (even if 200 miles away) and I'm thinking, "you're kidding, right?" you're going out "into a hurricane?"

Dang! Are they giving them away over at the Gate now?? I'll have to run over and get one!

you only get one of those houses if you are from louisianna and did not have flood insurance in a flood zone

However i do believe they are also giving away PET baby alligators to good homes!

As a South Floridian who has been through several hurricanes, I would rather be in WDW on it's worst day than in my house, without power, shuttered up with no light coming in and temperatures in the 90's. That's why I go to WDW when a hurricane is going to hit my area. It's a much better place to be. For Charlie and Jeanne last year WDW never lost power, but much of Orlando did and my house in S. FL lost power for 2 weeks.

AMEN minnie we always go to disney for our evacuations.. AND last year we left after frances came home to no poer and after 2 days and NIGHTS(gosh the night swere horrible hot) we loaded up teh kids and headed back to disney for airconditioning!!!! I said I don;t care how much it costs and we lived there for a week ubntil our power came back on!!! put us into debt but heck we were comfy!!!!!

LOL! How about we send all those "pet pythons" challenging the gator population home with the tourists?
