If you are planning to go to Walt Disney World this Firday or Saturday, you may want to check the weather channel as Hurricane Charley is forecast to go right through Central Floirda this Firday.

Disney has Closed Down due to Hurricanes in the past so its possible that it could happen this Firday or Saturday.

Disney only closed once for a hurricane, Floyd in 1999. That hurricane was huge and very strong, Disney would not close for a category 1 or 2 like charley. After all they remained open for Andrew a category 4 almost 5. The hurricane will be there Friday, and out of here by Saturday. I highly doubt disney will close anything, infact I am planning to drive up to Disney on Saturday.

And Floyd never even "hit" Florida, in spite of many early predictions that it was taking dead aim at WDW. Landfall was somewhere in NC, I believe-.

I remember it well. All predictions said it "WAS HEADING STRAIGHT FOR CENTRAL FLORIDA!!!!"
I am not the type to worry, but when I heard that Disney decided to close early the day before and not open the next day, well we drove to the west coast and got a room south of Tampa. Lo and behold, around 1-2am Floyd made a right turn and headed up the coast, never even got close.

This morning, they are saying that Charlie is already further west than they predicted. It should be past central Florida by tomorrow evening.

If they are expecting sustained winds of over 45 miles per hour on property, they will close the parks early, simply because the busses will not be allowed to run. They will need to clear the parks well before those winds are expected to hit. That was why the Floyd call was made so early in 1999, was because those winds were supposed to start arriving in the middle of the night/ early morning, making it impossible to get guests to the park. Also would have made communicating the cancellation to the cast much more difficult.

If I remember correctly (and I say this based solely on fading memory) Animal Kingdom was opened for WDW resort guests only during the afternoon, after the threat had passed.

From wdwig.com:

BREAKING WEATHER-RELATED NEWS - Hurricane Charley headed to Central Florida
- The8/13 Spirit of Aloha 5:15pm and 8:00pm shows Cancelled!
- ERIDE NIGHT FOR 8/13 HAS BEEN CANCELLED!
- No more Priority Seatings Accepted at RESORTS for 8/13; if you currently have them they will (as of now) be honored.

Andrew was a category 5 but it was never predicted to go towards Central Florida. Originally predictions were for it to hit land aroud the Dade-Broward county lines but it actually made land further south in the Homestead- cutker Ridge area.

Just got word that Disney's Animal Kingdom, Downtown Disney, and Typhoon Lagoon will be Closed today. The other parks will open at 8 am but will Closed at 1 pm.

Disney only closed once for a hurricane, Floyd in 1999

Well, they are closing today at 1:00. The Governor has requested all people off the highways by 4:00 this afternoon.

We head out for Orlando a week from Saturday, but they are now talking that there could be more severe storms coming after Charley is done, they said "it could be a busy tropical storm week next week too", just in case, I am making a contingency plan to head to Las Vegas as a last resort should any flights get cancelled here going to Orlando. I AM IN NEED OF A VACATION!!!!
LOL

hulabird. They announced last night that there was another storm coming off Africa as most of the hurricanes we get do. They think it will be a tropical storm by Wednesday next week. But NO ONE can predict where it will go this early. Its hurrican season here until Nov 30. We could get every one or none at all. Just be aware and keep in touch with local orlando news. That will be the first source to check. Trust me if a storm even glances at Florida the local news jump on it after Andrew hit us all down here by surprise really. Welcome to Florida.:D

Well, the Weather channel has just reported Charlie is a Cat 4, with sustained winds at 145 MPH, and there are reports of tornadic activitie heading toward the metro Orlando area. We are leaving for our trip two years in the planning on Wednesday, but I have learned long ago not wo sweat the stuff we can not control, so we will be there and make the most of any situation.

Just got back, as of now All WDW Parks are now Closed, also its not known if the parks will open on Saturday, depends on the amount of damage that Charlie does to wdw.

Also those Guests staying at Fort Wilderness were evacuated to other Disney Resorts and Disney Transportation has Shut Down for the night.

At the moment it looks like the eye will travel to the east of WDW, sparing it from the worst impact.
