Hungry Are The Damned! 10/15/07-10/25/07 - COMPLETED W/LOTS OF PICS!!!

The GF Afternoon Tea is one of my favorite things to do at WDW:thumbsup2 I always feel like I'm transported to a time when things were so laid back and refined! It's such a different experience than the usual park-hopping most people do during the day. Thanks for sharing the pics:woohoo:

I totally agree - afternoon tea is like an oasis in the middle of a raging storm. And I love all the dainties ... yum!

Glad you liked the pictures - thanks for taking the time to read us! :goodvibes

Feel free to hijack anytime ... you guys know I don't mind. Next time though, could you compare me to something / someone a little more flattering than Mayor McCheese? :lmao:

No can do, Be..Bre..nda. I left poor Mayor McCheese off my new names for Brenda post. ;) Must I dredge up one of your cheese plate food porn pics as proof?

And by the way, I was halfway done with Part 2 of Day 7 (which would have transplanted here since I had food reviews) when I accidently closed the window again!!

Thursday, October 18th - It's Time for Dinner ... Where Did I Leave My Spare Stomach?

Spoodles was not on the list.

Not even close.

Their menu struck me as limited in scope and included many items that, quite frankly, I consider weird and scary.

We were supposed to have a late dinner at Raglan Road where beery goodness, deep fried appetizers, and whisky-tippling desserts awaited us. But we were logy after ingesting all that food at afternoon tea and the idea of traveling over to Downtown Disney on a hot and steamy Florida evening was less than appealing.

Jay and I decided to take a stroll around the Boardwalk and tempt the vacation gods by trying that most daring of Disney feats: Reservationless Dining. :scared1:

During our walk we realized that of all the eating establishments on the Boardwalk there was only one that we had yet to try:

What is a Spoodle, anyway?

Neither one of us was hungry enough for a full dinner and none of the entrees listed on the menu were particularly appealing, but the appetizer selection sure sounded tasty! We approached the CM at the hostess station and inquired about the wait for a table and were told it would be about 30 minutes. Not too shabby for a busy Thursday night considering that we showed up without an ADR.

Once seated we were greeted by our server, Dan, who was absolutely terrific - personable, energetic, and a lot of fun. The restaurant was very busy but he took some time to just talk with us for a few minutes before we took care of some very important business - ordering drinks.

We ordered a bottle of Pellegrino and a pitcher of Sangria.

I don't want to quibble but isn't that really a carafe of Sangria?
254.jpg

We told our buddy Dan that we were interested in sharing some appetizers rather than ordering traditional dinner and asked him for some suggestions. Right away he said we should try the Mediterranean Dips. Jay, bless his dear heart, asked Dan what the best appetizer would be for someone of a less adventurous nature. Try the Four Cheese Flatbread, said Dan the Man; you won't regret it.

Alrighty then, we place our tastebuds in your capable hands - dazzle us, Dapper Dan!

So what does he do, but reappear less than five minutes later with a basket of warm bread, some dipping oil, and the stern warning that we leave room for the food we've just ordered.

Bread ... is there anything it can't do?
255.jpg

This bread was wonderful - hot and chewy, it had been lightly brushed with garlic butter. Who needs dipping oil?

Wondering what the inside of the restaurant looks like?

This place is huge...
251.jpg

It's enormous and when filled with people, as it was on the night that we were there, it does get very noisy. But we liked it - it felt like we were in a giant rustic farmhouse with fifty gregarious, hungry strangers none of whom, thank merciful God, had personal hygiene issues.

Cheesy goodness for the less adventurous diners amongst you
256.jpg

This is the four cheese flatbread made with four mystery cheeses although if I had to hazard a guess I'd say mozzarella, asiago, provolone, and parmesan. It's sprinkled with some garlic and sage and is it ever tasty! Warm gooey cheese all melted together on top of a crisp, peppery flatbread with just a hint of garlic salt. Fabulous!

Who put the dip in the dip da dip da dip?
257.jpg

What have we here? A bowl of olives ... yecccch! There's some kind of spicy chipotle mustard-ey type dip that was too potent for me but which Jay really liked. There's a feta / goat cheese dip which was smooth and yummy - we both liked that one. There's a yogurt dip which wasn't bad, but it was chilled and that just didn't seem to go as well with everything else we were eating. And then there's a bowl of hummus on the plate of pita bread. I tried a version of hummus over at Jiko and didn't really care for it, but I found out later they went heavy on the olives in their version and I don't like olives. The hummus at Spoodles was a traditional one made with chickpeas and garlic - me likey that just fine which was a big surprise to the hubby, who didn't expect to have to engage in a battle royale with me to determine who got to lick the hummus bowl clean.

Now, a rational person might think after all the food that Jay and I ate on this day that we would stop here before risking gastric explosion. But you all know by now that Jay and I aren't really rational when it comes to eating while on vacation. Spoodles has a dessert sampler on their menu. I can no more resist a dessert sampler than I can pass up the "buy two get one free" table at Borders. Jay doesn't even try to stop me any more.

A palette-shaped plate to please our palettes!

My memory is faulty and the on-line menus leave something to be desired when it comes to detail (now I remember why Spoodles didn't seem very appealing to begin with), but I do know that we had pistachio ice cream, vanilla bean cream brulee, a chocolate dipped biscotti, dense chocolate cake, and some kind of orange / marscapone cheese type tart thingy. Of all the desserts we liked the orange flavored one the least - the orange was very strong and overpowered what should have been a very light dessert. The rest of the dessert sampler was very good, even the ice cream, as long as I ate around the pistachios. ;)

Our waiter Dan checked up on us several times during the evening and as the restaurant cleared out, stopped by to chat: where ya from? are you Disney virgins? whaddya think of the food?

Answer Key: The armpit of the midwest; Do we look like the uninitiated; It was not undelicious.

The manager stopped by shortly after and we got to have a chat with her and she shared some of her favorite Disney Dining locations with us: Bistro Paris and Raglan Road. We also talked Food and Wine Festival with her and she told us that we were going to love Party for the Senseless on Saturday. She was so right!

All in all, Spoodles was a very pleasant surprise. It was one of the best unplanned meals of the entire trip and it certainly was a great end to a day that started on such a depressing dining note. And, sad but true ... Spoodles was the last joint freefall dining experience of the trip because the next day would usher in ... the virus. :scared:

By the way ... a spoodle is another name for a hybrid dog also known as a cockapoo (a breed that crosses an American cocker spaniel with a poodle) or it's another word for a cooking spoon. I'm going to choose to believe in this instance that the restaurant name refers to cooking spoons, especially when I take a second look at their signage. ;)

Thanks for reading!!

Next up: Breakfast at Kona!

Don't be alarmed ... I've been trying to update all afternoon on a piece of crap laptop and I had to save what I had finished before it erased everything... I'd curse a blue streak right now that would turn a sailor's hair white but I think I'd get in trouble for it. :headache:

We'll wait patiently for the next part of your review:worship: My family and I ate at Spoodles in Sept 07 and Dec. 07 and had very good meals. I agree with how loud it gets in the restaurant though! My dad has two hearing aids and had to turn them down due to the background noise.

Another fine review, Benda! Can't wait to hear about Party for the Senseless.:thumbsup2

Looks tasty.

Hi there Hedy! Spoodles was very tasty indeed - I was pleased to be wrong about it!

Thanks - I sometimes get very annoyed when my laptop won't cooperate and since Jay was working from home today I didn't have access to the other computer, which is much easier to work on.

Anyhoo - thanks for your patience and thanks for reading! We would definitely go back to Spoodles - we liked it that much!

Another fine review, Benda! Can't wait to hear about Party for the Senseless.:thumbsup2

Sistah Paige made it here before I could even tell her that I was finished! Thanks for stopping by, lady, especially after the busy couple of days you've had.

You will love Party for the Senseless ... I made an incredible pig of myself in front of people who DIS on a regular basis. They saw it all and can attest to the fact that Jay and I single-handedly tried to decimate all the food offerings that night. :rotfl2:

So glad you got to experience one of my favorite places - Spoodles!! We thought their mussels blew everyone else's away, if you like chorizo, you've got to try them.:thumbsup2 That Sangria is soooooo good.:worship:

Another yummy update Brenda! From everything I've read here on the DIS, Spoodles appetizers seem to get rave reviews.:goodvibes

I knew the virus was coming as you'd mentioned it at the beginning. Still, I was having so much fun reading, I'd half convinced myself that things would change...........

Now we have to try Spoodles.
I was looking for a place to go for dinner when Lionel takes me out for my birthday surprise......a night at AKL in a Savannah room! Wheeeeee!
It's not High Tea, but I think I can suffer through ;)

Hi Kathy! Jay is a big fan of chirizo ... I like it in small doses. Next time we try Spoodles it will have to be for a full dinner so we can try an entree or two ... or three. ;)

I thought their Sangria was great - a bit on the pricy side, but worth every drop! :thumbsup2

Thanks so much! I have to say we thought both appetizers were very good! I half convinced myself the virus wasn't going to hit while I was writing, too.  If I could go back and rewrite that part of the trip I surely would. But at least we get a do-over in 2009 - no viruses allowed!
Now we have to try Spoodles.

A night at the AKL? That's a pretty sweet birthday surprise. :lovestruc

Have you considered Jiko for dinner since you'll be staying right there? They have some terrific food!

Now this seems like a place we could enjoy. :thumbsup2

Just wondering, do you get funny looks when you take pictures of your food and beverage selections? :confused3

Great update B....as always. :)

Thanks for reading, Mother Goose! And if you think you'd like it then you need to give it a try on your next WDW visit. :thumbsup2

We may very well get some strange looks while taking pictures at the table but I don't really think about it any longer. I just try to take the picture as quickly as possible and do so in a way that will be as unobtrusive as possible. We try very hard not to disturb anyone else's dining experience. And we've seen plenty of other people snapping pics of their food, so it's not that uncommon.

thanks for the spoodles review, brenda! you're right....i AM looking forward to it now. i was having my doubts but you changed my mind. just reading about the bread they serve and that flatbread appetizer makes my mouth water. ray and i are probably going to do what you guys did - order stuff to share. only i think we may order shrimp pasta instead of the med. dips because neither of us are big on olives, mustard or hummus and it sounds like that's pretty much what that consists of. and of course the dessert sampler is a must!!!! thanks again!!!!! :goodvibes

Looks very yummy! We were going to try there on our last trip but canceled it last minute in favor for some place else.

We'll probably end up trying it this time though, those pictures are great looking.

Great review of Spoodles. We just returned from a 10 day trip in late Jan. and I had Spoodles ADRs for the night of 1/27. We also got hit with a virus on our trip (both kids and dh were felled at different points of the trip) and I really thought we wouldn't get to try it. DH was really sick on that day, so I took the kids over to Epcot in the afternoon and thought we would just eat CS somewhere. My normally not that adventurous 6 yo twins made a very sweet gesture and told me that we should go ahead and eat at Spoodles since I had been looking forward to it. I'm getting all verklempt just thinking about it.

We had a great time and our server was so nice. My ds does love hummus, so we got the Dips too. The red one was a curry of some sort according to the server and the other white one was a tzatziki, which I didn't love at first, but then it grew on me. I agree that the feta dip was soooo good. I had the lamb kebobs for an entree. They were a little bland for my taste, but salvaged by using some of the remaining dips to boost the flavor. We were stuffed, so we didn't get dessert, but that picture of the sampler makes me want to go back right now!

Glad you had a nice unplanned experience and I'm looking forward to your next review.

Oooh that looks yummalicious ::yes:: am I allowed to say yummalicious?? :upsidedow

Oh and I have to add to your answer to Nancy...I get the WEIRDEST looks when I take pictures of my food. Some people look at me as if I was just taking a picture of a pile of poo
What is WITH that??? Relax people, you're on vacation...mind your own damn business :rolleyes1 :lmao:

Great update Brenda! :thumbsup2

This review makes me think that we should try breakfast or dinner here.

Can't wait for the Kona report popcorn::

P.S. I would love to see the quilt! Are you using it or is it one that is hung on the wall? Please share a pic :)

Spoodles was the sleeper hit of our last trip. I loved the dip sampler. All your olives belong to me.

I had the pleasure of dining at Bouchon at the Venetian when I was in Las Vegas for a wedding last fall. So, so good, I had the mussels in the white wine, mustard and saffron broth served with pomme frites. The homemade bread dunked in the broth. :cloud9: I just drooled at the memory.
