I had a trip planned to New Orleans last week. When I first starting searching rental rates they were sky high for every class of car. I booked the cheapest class, a mid-size through Priceline at about $325. I was able to find a lower rate of $234 with Dollar directly.
About one week before leaving I was on Delta Airline (where my flights were booked) and noticed they had a link to Dollar. I was able to book the same dates for only $108. I did have to downsize to a compact car, which was fine as it was just me. Turned out when I checked-in they had run out of mid-size vehicles and had a long line of unhappy people, but my compact (Toyota Corolla) was ready and waiting.
So if you are having trouble with rental rates check out discounts using your airline. I was very surprised!
