Has any one had troubles with their birth certificate if they were born in Hudson County, NJ? Seems there were employees selling fake ones and the government is being particularly picky about them. DH has one. So does his sister. She was advised to get an official one from the State before she cruises. Any one else experience this?

My wife has a state certified copy of hers, so can't help you, sirry.

I'm not sure where your county is in NJ but my brother just called me last week about something similar. His daughter was born in NJ, the lived in Basking Ridge at the time. They are going on a family trip that requires a passport. He said that her birth cert. didn't list her parents and the post office wasn't sure if the passport office would accept it. If they don't he will have to fly to NJ to get a new one(they now live in the Chicago area). He said the cost of the flight will be cheaper than paying the expediting fees for both the new birth cert and the passport!

Maybe this is one of the forged birth certs. Good luck!

As I understand it, anyone that was born in Jersey City (not sure about the rest of Hudson County) must get a new birth certificate, whether or not they have a certified copy now (unless it is STATE certified), regardless of how long they've had their current copy. The security of those certificates has been compromised, and they are no longer accepted as ID. I haven't gotten my new one yet, because I have a passport. However, by the time it expires (in two years) I will have to get a new certified BC copy in order to renew it.

I wonder if I can take a few years off my age with the new one? :rotfl:

I found this article about the siutuation posted in the 10/4/05 issue of the Jersey Journal.
====================================
Yes. All Hudson County-issued birth certificates have been compromised, regardless of how old.

N.T. writes, "I was born in Jersey City in 1961. I am currently living in Atlanta, GA. What can out of state residents do to get a certified copy of their birth certificates?"

Out-of-state residents should follow the same procedure as state residents. Download and complete the "REG-3" form available at www.state.nj.us/health/vital/vital.shtml and mail it, along with a check or money order for $4 and a photocopy of your driver's license or State ID, to: NJ Vital Statistics - Customer Service Unit, P.O. Box 370, Trenton, N.J., 08625-0370. For express service - with an additional $10.95 charge - go to www.vitalcheck.com. For information, call (609) 292-4087.

P.L. of Jersey City writes, "I sent a check, application, and copy of my driver's license to Trenton to obtain a certified copy of my birth record. As of this date, I have not received anything."

Barbara Slim, a customer service representative for the New Jersey Department of Vital Statistics, explained that the Department of Homeland Security has issued an advisory for all U.S. citizens to renew their birth certificates (a precautionary measure no doubt prompted by incidents like the one in Hudson County), and that, as a result, her office has been overwhelmed with applications.

The Department of Vital Statistics is unable to answer questions about paper applications, and recommends that those in immediate need of a birth certificate use the VitalCheck service.

D.T. of Jersey City, who wants to order multiple copies of her birth certificate, writes, "Do you have any idea if the $4 is the cost of the application or of the copy?"

The cost of the initial birth certificate is $4. Copies are $2.

Many have complained that when they call the phone number for the New Jersey Department of Vital Statistics included at the end of the initial column, they are unable to get through or are placed on hold for a long time.

FIXIT was informed that the department is in the midst of updating its telephone equipment. You may reach a customer service representative directly by calling (609) 943-4366, (609) 943-4364, or (609) 292-4415.

FIXIT is your troubleshooter at The Jersey Journal. Write to FIXIT, c/o The Jersey Journal, 30 Journal Square, Jersey City, NJ 07306, or email journalfixit@yahoo.com. No telephone calls will be accepted, but please include your daytime telephone number. Remember to send copies of pertinent documents. Do not send originals.

I was caught up in this - I sent to the state and got my "new" birth certificate in a short time - I got extra copies just in case. It was all of Hudson County. Not a big deal really, just an annoyance!

Thank you for all the great information. Looks like we will head to Trenton to get a copy. That way it's a sure thing and will have it in our hands! Plus we will have it for future uses. Time to get passports!

Thanks again everyone!!

SInce I have done the Trenton run already, on the way to our cruise actually last year. I'll give you a heads up. If I remember correctly, once we turned in the paperwork (there was a small booth in the lobby), they told me it may take up to 4 hours to get them. In actuality, it was only 30 minutes, and we were on our way to Port Canaveral.

Mcorbo - thank you. My SIL just did it and it took her 2 hours. So we know we are in for a sit and wait, I just like the security. We'll do it prior to leaving on 12/24!!
