Hubby can't come on trip--sick UPDATE NOT GOING PNEUMONIA

That's a shame DH is sick, but glad to hear he is improving and might join you later.

Absolutely GO!! I have taken my kids on several solo trips to Disney and elsewhere. It's fun but different also. Since I am solo I make sure to not jam too much in a day and make sure the kids have downtime just playing around either in the pool or at the resort.

I also like to rent a car and like to feel in control of our getting around. Yes, when the kids were small the stroller especially a double was a huge pain on buses etc... It is easy to drive around WDW and the surrounding area. Now sometimes I have made a wrong turn but the way the signage is set up, you can loop back around without too much difficulty. I also like having a rental b/c we hit the Target or Wal-Mart for breakfast/drinks/snack supplies and sometimes more than once in a visit.

Hope your DH does get better and can join you, but if not have an awesome trip! It will be great if you have a positive outlook and your kids will pick up on it too!

I've decided to get the car. The kids love the freedom. I'll find the way. I've made the drive twenty three times over the years.

Dh is doing better tonight. Still sick but I feel like I recognize my hubby again. We packed today. We have an owners locker so I only need my purse and a small carry on.

My older daughter says she will help and I've talked to the little ones about being good listeners and not getting too crazy. I figure immigration and security will be challenging and small things like getting breakfast at the airport with everyone in tow. The plane will be easy. I'm used to having the twins on my own as we are rarely seated as a family. We will take it easy at the parks. Groceries are already ordered for delivery.

Biggest hope is dh is well enough to join us later in the week. I'm going to miss him.

You can do it!

I know I would be 'nervous' but I would totally do it with my 3 (ages 7,6 &2). I do lots of amusement park day trips by myself with them. So I feel I am prepared. Only you know yourself and your kids but it sounds like you'll be fine.

The good thing is as DVC members this is obviously not their first or last visit. You can slow things way down. There will be another trip to do anything they miss.
I would keep as much the same as possible, doing what you are used to. Doing it a new way, like ME, may be an added stress you don't need.
I would start my lowering everyone's expectations. Warn the 9 year old there will be no thrill rides that the little siblings can't do. I would tell everyone to expect to do half of the rides you normally do

I would also think about the seat configuration on the plane. Will one child have to sit 'alone' or is it 2-2? I would prepare the kids to not have a parent right next to them during the flight.

I have a stroller rented from an outside company. The thought of dragging it on buses is not pleasant, hence the car rental. But if I bagged the stroller and just rented one in the parks, that could make buses doable. Hubby could rent the car when he joins us...That might just work. Is Magical Express a pain? We are so used to being totally in control of our time with the car. I haven't used the buses since before I was married and had kids.

I've never rented a stroller in the park. We just brought our cheapie umbrella stroller from home and it worked well. It is nice to have it for outside of the parks too (on the way to and from the resorts and parks). Very easy to get on/off the busses with it. And on the monorail, you can just roll the stroller on (if its not too crowded). Keep in mind I only had one and not two to deal with, so I can see where a double stroller might be a whole 'nother animal! :)

We LOVE Magical Express! I can't recommend it highly enough. Not having to deal with your luggage (although you can bring it on the bus if you want) is awesome. But having someone else take you from the airport to the resort is priceless! Hope you enjoy your trip and that hubby can join you later in the week!

We are not going cancelled everything today. We were due to leave tomorrow but we found out today that dh has pneumonia. He has taken a turn for the worse. He can't even climb the stairs. Can't cook for himself or walk the dogs. I'm mad at the dr who took him off his antibiotics Wednesday. If the had changed his meds instead we'd be going tomorrow. Totally mad, sad, disappointed, resentful. Points will go to waste. Lost two grand on the air.

Thanks. I am so disappointed. I was so looking forward to the trip. Lots of planning. I am so mad. Madder than I can even believe myself. I suppose in time I'll feel better. There are bigger problems to have than a cancelled trip, but feeling sorry for myself tonight. I'll shake it off and feel better tomorrow.

I asked dh if we should go and he said "sure. I knew there was more to it than that. I asked him I were the one sick what would he do. He said the trip would be diminished, we've been before and if be sick at home. That was my answer. The golden rule. Do unto others. Besides, reading the potential complications due to pneumonia scares me to death. Hoping he gets well without incident. Disney will wait for now.

Thank you so much to those who have responded this week. You've been a real comfort v

I hope he soon feels better. Disney will always be there. maybe next time add on a few extra days to help make up for this trip? make it extra special. look after your self too. I know sick husbands can be demanding!! lots of Disney love to you Xx

Thanks so much. I've already upgraded our accommodation for our next trip to use up a few points. Might rent the rest. Dh is not in a good place now. Prayers please.

You probably already did this, but in emergencies, most airlines will give you credit for your ticket towards a future flight. You have to pay a fee to transfer the ticket, but it's usually less than the entire airfare. If I remember right, you have up to a year to use the credit.

Hope your husband begins to improve. You made the right choice to stay home with him.

I did cancel the air. The change fee is $200 per person, but it leaves about $1000 in air credit in my account. DVC also allowed me to bank my points, which was very good of them. So next year, we'll be able to get an extra trip in. I'm thinking late March. Actually just checking air fees now and DVC availability.

DH is improving, albeit slowly. He's needed me home, as he is unable to do anything for himself. The trip in 2014 will be better anyway if we can all be together. Additionally, the weather in WDW this week is supposed to be horrendous, so perhaps I've been spared in that regard. Things have a way of working out.
