HPV Vaccine...yay or nay?

My daughter has had the vaccine....

I didnt have an opinion of it one way or the other, and our family doctor said it couldn't hurt, so she had the first shot last October. 2 days later she had her first seizure. Didn't make the connection to the shot. Had the second injection, and less than a week later....had another seizure. Asked about the timing in connection with the vaccination, and was told the had nothing to do with each other. Ran tons of tests looking for something that was causing the seizures, and found nothing. Had the last of the injections in the Spring.....and you guessed it, had another seizure.

They still haven't found a a cause for the seizures, despite dozens of tests....but the doc still says that it was just a coincidence with the HPV shots.....of course its also a coincidence that she hasn't had another seizure since.

So if I had it to do over again.....I would pass.

That's very scary. I hope your dd is doing well now. I saw quite a few similar stories on youtube. As of right now, my 2 dd's will not be getting the vaccine. I may rethink that decision in a couple of years but for now, no.

No for my girls, I declined it for myself also. It's like any vaccine though. There will be plenty of people that had it and were fine and got immunity and some people who weren't fine, didn't get immunity or had some other effects.

I've know a few people that always had normal paps until after they got the shots. Suddenly they are having abnormal cells and other changes. (and they haven't had any other partners since the shots either so it's not a new infection or problem)

I am not letting DD15 get the vaccine. I am not completely comfortable with it. When the Dr's can't come to a consensus my gut says 'no'. I personally don't think we know enough about the long term effects.

The most recent CDC VAERS report (as of September 1, 2009) shows that after 26 million doses there have been 15,037 reports of adverse events following Guardisil vaccination.

Not a high percentage, and most were considered non-serious (of course anything short of hospitilization, death, permanent disability, and life threatening illness is considered non-serious) but 7% of the reported events were considered serious.

Not a chance I'd be willing to take with a 6th grader who is most likely not sexually active. IMO most parents with children that age certainly have time to wait and watch.

FWIW, I also have to wonder how many cases of possible adverse effects go unreported. ie: I think what happened with BuffettFan's DD should have been reported, not written off as a case of unfortunate timing.
