how would you pronounce this first name?

I would say Dee-ann as well, with slightly more stress on the second syllable.

Fish.

My oldest has a lot of problems with people pronouncing her name, and she always corrects them. It has gotten to the point with one woman she works with refusing to pronounce it correctly (that's too hard!I can't remember it!) that she has started mispronouncing her name. I don't see how Arlina is difficult. r-lin-ah. Not r-line-ah, not r-leen-ah, not air-leen-a....

After dealing with people having trouble with her name, we named the younger one Mary.

While I would have mispronounced your daughter's name at first, once corrected I would certainly have remembered the right way. Her co-worker sounds like a real peach to deal with. I love your daughter's solution! :rotfl:

I would say ar-lee-na, definitely. I've never seen -ina at the end of a name pronounced like "in a". Tina, Catalina, Katrina...

I would say Dee-ann too!

Same with me (for both).

Now, once Arlina had corrected me, I'd pronounce it as requested. Or try. I'm hard-of-hearing (though mainly corrected with my hearing aids), and sometimes have trouble with hearing nuances in pronunciation (even if other people think of them as obvious and not nuances).

Arlina is an old family name. We can trace at least one as a first or middle name back about 250 years. I believe it is the feminine form of Arlin. For some reason, no one had problems pronouncing it for my Grandmother, but most people have trouble with it for my daughter. r-leen-a is the most common way people pronounce it, I think because it looks like Arlene to them.

Okay, I have one. My son's name is Eli. It's not Elijah or Elias--his birth certificate just says Eli. So when I fill out doctor or school or whatever else forms, it's Eli. To me, that's not an out-of-the-world name.

Can I tell you how many doctor's offices, dentist offices, etc. have pronounced it Ellie? Like when they come out to call the child back, without seeing them? Ellie????? Really????? I have corrected the receptionist at his dentist's office twice a year every year since we started going when he was a toddler. He's 12. She still calls to remind "Ellie" of her appointment!

I would also say Dee-Ann. Please let us know if we are correct!

I think people look at your name and panic at the spelling. I had a friend named Alisa pronounced Ah-Lisa but she was called Ah-lissa, Alisha, Elise etc. I think people just freeze when they see it, but if they took a few seconds to really look, they would get it correct. Kind of like your name.

I know two Megans - one who is a MEE-gan and the other who is a MAY-gan and I'm constantly saying the wrong one :(
I feel bad every time I do it but it's not deliberate..

For me it is that I think of names like Tina, Katerina, Katrina, Adrina, etc. All of which are pronounced (most of the time) with an "een-ah" ending.

Do you pronounce it like Dianne? I know a girl that spells her name as you but pronounce as Diane.

In college, I roomed with a girl from Bermuda. She spells her name as Katherine but insisted that in Bermuda it's pronounce Ka-trine.

I have 2 and both are coworkers-

Youry

Chelsea

I would be pretty certain that would be pronounced Ar-LEE-nuh, on first seeing it. I would guess that Arlinna or Arlynna would be ar-LINN-uh.

How would you pronounce these names?

I'm useless at the proper way to show this but…

Your-e (like you are saying that the e belongs to someone)

Chel-sea (sea like the Black Sea) though I know some people go with:
Chel-sea-ah

Chelsea is actually my name and I go with the first (as do 99% of people who say my name).

This tread is interesting so I'll join in!

I'd say Youry as YOR-ee.

Is there any other way to pronounce Chelsea other than CHEL-see???? Does the person pronounce it like Kelsey?

YOO-ree and CHELL-see?

I work with someone named Antony. How would you all pronounce that?

I also work with a Shanna. People are all the time calling her Shay-nuh.

How would you pronounce these names?

Your-ee (like Uri Geller)

and

Chel-see (there is a soccer club in the UK called Chelsea and it is also a UK place name in London, that is how it is pronounced here)

Youry is pronounced - Jody (the 'D' is really a rolled 'R' but no one can do it)

Chelsea pronounces her name Chel SEA Uh. She would get upset if someone pronounced it wrong even if they just met her.

Antony-- An-ton-ee

Shanna-- Like Shannon without the last 'N'

I also know a Shana, she constantly has to say, "rhymes with banana."
