How will your wedding dress travel?

Hello all!

I was wondering how everyone plans on getting their dresses to their location? I am sending the floral, welcome bags and a few other things ahead of time to the hotel I am staying at the night before our cruise (Disney Dream wedding), however, I am too nervous to do that with my dress! :sad2:

I called Air tran, that is who we are flying, and they said it can be my carry on but I don't trust even the upgraded David's Bridal bag I bought for the dress....any suggestions on how to get the dress to Disney with no issues?

I was looking at something like this but I am afraid that the airline will say it is too big for a carry on even though they have assured me they would make accommodations....what to do?

I'm planning on carrying it on in a garment bag and using frequent flyer miles to upgrade my seat to first class so they can stash it in the coat closet up there. I've heard sometimes they will let you stash it even if you aren't in First Class...but I don't want to risk it.

I bought a "destination wedding" travel box that is the correct size to carry on the plane and store in the overhead bin. My dress will be steamed in our room the day before the wedding so I am not overly concerned about the wrinkles. :goodvibes

i put mine in the dress bag, folded it in thirds and mailed it, UPS, in a big brown box, to carolyn allens. and it did great! i was worrie about the box part. it wasn't a dinky box, but certainly not like a wardrobe box (for moving). :thumbsup2

my dress gets it's own airplane seat. DF and I are not small people so this is also to appease my paranoid "they are gonna call me fat and not let me fly just like the people in all those news stories!" thinking. i've never had that happen before... but by buying an extra seat between us, we will cover my paranoia and have a seat for the dress at the same time.

Could you tell me where you got the box, I would be interested in researching that as well...

Having an extra seat is VERY nice, I use to travel all the time and wished for people not to show up for their flights! lol

Yeah I use to fly to Hawaii all the time from NJ and they would often take the brides dresses up front BUT I am afraid of getting passed screening to get on the plane...not really concerned once I get on

This is the bag I am currently looking at...looks durable!

Are you concerned about the size of the carry on? Your airline should have the maximum linear size (L+W+H) so as long as the bag does not exceed that you should be fine. Most luggage sites will let you know if something fills the carry on size requirements. We just carried on a garment bag suitcase a few months ago and had no issues.

In carrying it on the plane and going to place it in the overhead bin right above where we are sitting. I'm not to worried about wrinkles since we get steaming included with the DCL wedding.

PrincessTinker, I bought the box from the Foster Stephens website. Let me know if you need more information.

I too, transported my dress in a box designed specifically for transporting wedding dresses in the overhead locker of the plane. I had my dress boutique pack the dress into the box when I collected it, it didn't see the light of day again until we arrived in resort and I hung it up. The box never left my sight during the whole flight from the UK!!
I bought my box off of Ebay (just search for 'wedding dress travel boxes', and the seller even personalized it with a label stating our names, VR date and location of our ceremony. It was not expensive, and worked really well. I admit, that I had to have it steamed the day before the ceremony, but most brides do that anyway. In my PJ somewher, there is a photo of my dress box. Feel free to check it out!!!

after dresses are packed in these boxes, how do they look after you unpack them? do they still need to be steamed afterwards?

Great question...i am wanting to know the same thing! My bridal boutique told me they would 'pack' it so it wouldnt move...but I dont know...

Mine certainly needed steaming - it was satin and was quite wrinkled when I unpacked it. Travelling from the UK, however, I feel that no matter how I had packed my dress for it's journey, it would have needed steaming. I scheduled the appointment for the day before our VR and Lori from Loftis Productions came to the room and did a fabulous job on my dress and my daughters MOH dress for $89.00. It was well worth having done and at that price not worth risking a wrinkled dress!!

I am not going to even chance bringing my dress home. (I have four pomeranians....the hair would be all over my dress) I am having it shipped directly from Kleinfeld's to Carolyn Allen's. There she will steam it and deliver it to GF for us. She is amazing btw and super sweet.

I put my dress in one of those space saver bags and then had it by itself in a carry on. It never left my sight. I had it steamed by Carol Allen. I actually went into the store and she added straps and a bussell to my dress for me in less than a week. They are great definately recommend them.

There was no way that I was shipping my dress, I do not trust Fed Ex or UPS with legal documents, they were so not trusted with my wedding dress. I had my bridal salon box it up for me in a box that was regulation size to fit in the over head bin. They just used a standard brown box that was the right size with my dress and veil in the dress bag. She then attached a handle to the brown box. I flew from JFK on Jetblue and had no problem what so ever. It was not heavy to carry. I got right through security (they were more concerned with my water bottle then my wedding dress lol). I boarded the plane early to make sure that the dress was directly above my head.

On all the plane's websites they have their regulations so just look it up and give the measurements to the bridal salon and they should be able to pack it up. I was not worried if my dress got wrinkled since Carolyn Allen came to my room the morning of my wedding to steam my dress. Hope this helps.

Yes, I am afraid with my chapel train that the garment bags/suitcase they have would not fit as a carry on :(

That is the best, I am so happy we get that included in our weddings!

Thank you, I will be checking this out!

I will check Ebay, never thought of that!

I asked this question on my facebook as well and was told to try wrapping my dress in tissue paper and putting it in an upgraded suit garment bag after it was inside the David's Bridal bag. I am also going to insist it is put in the front closets by First class....I will be checking out the garment boxes two people suggested though :)
