I, like sm4987, am one of those people that doesn't like to be the centre of attention. I like to be the behind-the-scenes/calling-the-shots person. So when my DFi proposed to me in an incredibly public way I was a) struck by how romantic it was and b) horrified.
There's a musical comedy dinner theatre in my city. Usually a little corny, but pretty good. We used to have season tickets to it, and DFi was going to be in town for Thanksgiving and we decided to make a party of it. My best friend was also coming in to town, and there ended up with about 10 of us going to the theatre (including my mother).
Now at this place the meal and the play are presented in bits here and there, so you get your soup/salad and then Act I, your entree and then Act II, your dessert and then Act III. And then your liquor bill

. We had great seats, right in the front and a little off from centre. Oh, and the actors (cast) are also your servers, and they stay in character throughout the whole thing.
Well my DFi had arranged with the theatre to do something special for the proposal. They wanted to do a fake giveaway and get me up on stage, but since we had season tickets and know the normal routine I'd know it was fake. Also we'd actually already been to that same show so I not only knew the normal routine, I knew the pacing for that show. So instead what they did was this:
During the actual dinner/entree portion, since there's no acting on the stage, occasionally one of the cast will get up there and just sing (or tell jokes etc). So at one point one guy is up there and he's singing some love type song, and I wasn't paying too much attention. He finished, we clapped, went back to eating. About 10 minutes later another guy gets up on stage and starts singing "Stand By Me". And when he got to the chorus he stood right in front of our table (since we were right at the front) and instead of singing "stand by me" he sang "so darling, darling marry me" and my Dfi was down on his knee with the ring in his hand.
Romantic isn't it? I was totally embarassed.
And stupid me, the thing that struck me the most at the time was that the ring box had a light in it that went on when the box was opened! I remember thinking "Oh, cool!".
It was interesting to hear the wave of excitement that went through the crowd. You could hear the whispers, as people tried to determine if it was just part of the show. And then the tension as they realized it wasn't. And then the ripple of "she said yes!".
One of the cast members brought us out a special "engagement doughnut" - one of those longjohn things - that they made us each take a bite out of at the same time. Lovely photo that one is
And later, as a scheduled part of the show, they were singing "This Diamond Ring" and as he walked (while singing) past our table, doing his attempt to sell the ring to people, he said to us "you don't need this" and kept going.
And every time we went back after that we'd get asked "so when's the wedding?". We got engaged in 2001, the wedding is next year. And of course we have our song picked out.
It's kind of weird to keep getting recognized like that though.
