How We Became Addicted to a Mouse...A Family's First Trip!

Love your trip report so far! Can't wait to read more! :yay:

Welcome! Glad to have you!

Enjoying your trip report so far.

Your jane sounds like my 3yo boy. He's been a "strong willed" :rolleyes1 child since day 1!

We normally drive from New Jersey and it seems like every trip home we have some crazy issue happen, such as er visits, hurricanes, snow storms, emergency dr calls. Glad it always seems to happen at end of trip, can't imagine that stress beforehand. Glad your DD is fine now, must of been scary!!:scared1:

It was scary, but it was soooooo good to relax in Disney. I really think that all we went through before hand gave us a bit of perspective and REALLY helped us appreciate the trip. :)

I'm in! What is it with the youngest? My DS #3 is a bit, ummm, challenging to say the least. Can't wait to read more.

I have a theory that I got Jane last so that we would make sure the other babies were born. If I had had her first...well, who knows WHAT would have happened...:rotfl:

I am really enjoying your TR and your kids are super cute.:goodvibes

I am very sorry that your daughter ended up in the hospital but glad it was able to work itself out in time for you to make to Disney. I am sure that your trip was even sweeter just having such a scare behind you.

I was just actually almost in the same boat. My son has CF and had a cough that was just not going away. It was also messing with his lung functions. They kept putting him on antibiotic but nothing was working. Finally they put him on very strong antibiotics (Dr called it the big guns) luckily it worked because the next option was hospitalization. Not fun for any kid or parent to go through.:confused3

I sometimes hate Mapquest. It seems to be wrong quite alot. It once took me over 3 hours to find a doctor only to find out it was only 5 minutes from my job.:headache:

I definalty agree that PJ's are appropriate attire for a early morning flight. I would have done the same thing and have. :lmao:

So, after a very unsatisfactory “pseudo-sleep”, I had everyone dressed and ready to go around 4:30 or so. We grabbed some boxes of cereal and headed down to await our carriage...er...shuttle. It arrived at 5:00 and we took a few minutes to load the luggage and get situated.
DSC01874.jpg

We were all filled with excitement, and fairly bouncing in our seats as we loaded into the van. Jane was WITHOUT A CARSEAT! I was under the assumption that the airport was RIGHT THERE, so I wasn’t too worried. Turns out that it was a *little* further than I would have liked, and some of it was on the interstate. :scared1: And since I am an extended rear facer, this really threw me for a loop. JANE, on the other hand, looooooved it. Because of COURSE she did.

Now, our plane didn’t take off until around 7:45 or so, but we thought we needed to be at the airport two hours early. Because we are overachievers at stuff like that and wanted the award for “earliest check in”. And since there was literally NO ONE at security check in (the other people on our flight were smart enough to sleep later than us) we breezed through in five minutes. And let me be clear on this...we breezed through in five minutes WITH THREE CHILDREN, a stroller, four hundred pounds of carryon luggage and JANE (who counts twice because duuuuude...she’s JANE).

So, now it’s like, 5:35. All the mad rushing was over with and suddenly we found ourselves with nothing to do! For like two hours. Now what?? Surely there is food at the airport, and since we could all use some breakfast before boarding, that sounded like a plan.

Only nothing was open. Because NORMAL PEOPLE ARE NOT AT THE AIRPORT AT 5:30 am apparently. Meh. But we meandered around long enough to find some newsstand with sausage rolls and coffee. We loaded up on those. Jane, being Jane, would have nothing to do with the sausage roll. That would have been too easy. I sent my mother a text telling her things were going about like would would expect with a two year old on very little sleep and off her routine. We were walking carefully around her. And wishing for big sticks...;)

Jamie took Jane on a long walk in the airport and came back with doughnuts for her. Then, of course, Jay wanted one, so I took Jane on a long walk for a doughnut for Jane. This was The. Longest. Walk. Ever. Made even longer by the fact that Jane cried the WHOLE way. 4,000 miles later, we finally find Jay a doughnut, and feeling shame from all the stares Jane is starting to attract, we hauled it back to our gate.

FINALLY (can I get an “amen!”) it was time to board the plane. I told the flight attendant that I had a CARES harness and asked if I needed to board early to install it. She told me just to board with everyone else. For anyone traveling with the CARES, go ahead and board at your earliest opportunity. It takes a bit of time to get the harness installed and it is much easier to do before everyone begins boarding. We learned this the hard way.

This was Jane’s first plane experience and let me tell you, she did NOT like boarding the plane. The walkway from the gate was great, but actually stepping through the door onto the plane, scared her to death. She coped pretty well though but clung to us tightly. Jay and Annie sat in their own row and Jamie and I had Jane directly in front of them.
DSC01878.jpg

Poor Jane was so scared of the plane experience that she was having NONE of that CARES harness. She wouldn’t set foot (or booty) in her own seat. I got the harness installed, but felt very rushed since we were one of the last rows to board. We decided to let Jane get used to the plane in our laps while we were still sitting at the gate and then push the harness issue when we pulled away.

And we did have to force the harness issue. She put up a fight, but relented when she realized she wasn’t going to win that battle. She was very good once in the harness, but wanted to hold hands. The harness, for anyone who is wondering, was great. She undid the seatbelt in about two seconds flat, so the harness was the only thing that really was able to keep her contained. She could not get out of it, even when she tried.

The first flight went smoothly and soon we were touching down in Cincinnatii. This is where things got all exciting! Because as we approached our gate THERE WERE PEOPLE WEARING MICKEY SHIRTS!!!! Somehow, it never occurred to me that actual people would also be on our plane, headed to Orlando to vacation with with Mouse! Just like us!!! The atmosphere at the gate was electric. You could just sense the excitement from everyone. Lots of families and lots of little kids. Jane had finally gotten in a great mood during the first plane ride and we elected to change her into actual clothes. This was met with a resounding, “NOOOOOOOO!!!!!” You have to understand Jane and her love of pajamas. Or, really anything that she has her mind set on wearing. Which, on this particular day, happened to be pajamas. Which is why she still had them on in the first place. BUT, being that it was NOON, it was time to get her out of them. She pitched a fit. The Delta representatives were amused. Especially when I consented to leaving her pajama pants on with her dress. It looked kind of cute in a two year old kooky kind of way.
DSC01876.jpg

After I was sweaty and worn out from Jane’s antics, I asked to board early and showed the flight attendant my CARES harness. They were very gracious and let me board as soon as they could. It is possible that they took pity on me after watching me get Jane dressed. I don’t care because I got to board early. :rolleyes1 I got the harness installed correctly and Jane into it before they started full boarding. Muuuuuch better! And by the time we took off, Jane was nodding and actually went to sleep!! DISNEY MAGIC. No...really. :worship:
DSC01877.jpg

And when we touched down in Orlando, there were people everywhere! They were all standing there with Disney sacks. Loaded down with new purchases from Disney World. I couldn’t help but get a little sad knowing that in a week, we would be loaded up on a plane and going home from Disney, just like these poor people. :sad1:

But FIRST...a week in Disney! And that meant finding the Magic Express! No worries...I am a DIS boards member! I know all about the transportation board and how to find the ME! I shall lead you there!!

I led them long enough for us to find a place to eat (Burger King) and then I led the right to a proper person who might be able to give us VERBAL directions to the ME. Apparently, I am incapable of following written ones. :rolleyes1 And even now, I’m not sure that I will be able to find my way back there. I know there was an elevator involved. And some sort of train/subway/monorail type thing that slung you around if you weren’t holding on. Not that *I* would know anything about that.... Beyond that, I am just going to rely on my blank “I’m a tourist” expression and pray someone takes pity on me.

No matter though, because it wasn’t long before we were standing FIRST IN LINE and waiting for our bus! Note to self: first in line does not necessarily mean anything except that you will be waiting a LOOOOOONG time for your bus to show up. Because another one just left. Oh.

The wait seemed to take forever, but eventually...there it was!! Our ME bus that would take us to our resort!

Hi Corrine! And welcome!! So glad you've joined in! Thanks for the comments on the kiddos...they are pretty cute. It saves them on most days...

So glad you were able to avoid a hospital stay.. One of my good friends has a daughter with CF and I know that every hospital stay (not that they happen much for them...) is so hard on them. It is always so much more restful to recover at home. So glad the antibiotics worked!

And I agree about those pjs! I was so cold on that plane that I was wishing for them myself!

I'm tired already and you haven't even made it on ME yet! I hope you get a nap in there at some point :)

I have been to WDW many times but have never written a trip report. You are inspiring me. I love it!!!! Thank you for sharing and look forward to reading more. Our first trip with our two girls they were only 4 months and almost 2 yrs old but we only stayed for two days! The next year we went back for only one day! Then we didn't go again for almost 10 years!!! Now we go every year......

Hee hee...no naps! No naps!! Actually, we DID plan to nap, things just didn't quite work out that way. No matter though...we were having too much fun to sleep in Disney!

Loving the report!! I love reading the reports of first timers!:cool1::yay:

Awwww...thanks! And welcome! I am having the best time writing this. It's giving me a little "trip fix" and letting me relive the whole experience. :)

Thanks so much! I read sooooo many trip reports before we went on our own vacation. I always thought I wanted to write one, but the whole posting picture thing was throwing me off. Once I figured out how to do THAT though, I knew I wanted to write it. It's a great way to relive the memories! And I have GREAT admiration for you...a 2 year old and a 4 month old is mighty impressive. I don't know if I would have been able to be so brave when Jay and Annie were so little. :rotfl:

You have my attention!! popcorn::

OH!!!!

AAMMMMEEEENNNN Sista!!
:rotfl2: And WELCOME!!!

Just wanted to let you know that I am going to have to take a brief hiatus from writing for the next few days. My cousin (who I was very close to) was killed in a car accident this morning and my family and I are on the way to Mississippi in the morning to be with my family. I WILL continue writing when I get back this weekend, but didn't want anyone to think that I had fallen off the face of the earth in the meantime.

I'm sorry for your loss. Have a safe trip.

I am so sorry that you have to deal with such a tragedy. We always like to think that it's not going to happen to us and it is always so wrenching when it does.

I'll be here waiting for the next installment when you're ready. Love the picture of Jane with marker on her face - she's my kind of girl!

So sorry to hear about the tragedy in your family, sending you strength to get through these hard times.

I really did enjoy the start of your TR and look forward to seeing how your WDW went when you return.

Safe Journeys.

I've been lurking and reading your trip report and just wanted to say that I'm really enjoying your report so far :thumbsup2

Also, I saw your update and I wanted to say I am sorry for your loss

Thank you all so much for your kind words! It's been such a tough week and a half. We have returned from Mississippi and I am trying to get back into the groove of life. We will miss my cousin more than words can say. We are a very close knit family, so losing him has just devastated my whole family. Thankfully we are all leaning on each other, which has been good therapy.

I am working on my next installment now, and should have it up soon. Thanks for being so patient with me!

So, when we left last off we were standing FIRST IN LINE and awaiting our Magical Express bus!

When it FINALLY arrived, we all boarded excitedly. Francisco, our bus driver, welcomed us and helped us load our carry ons and stoller under the bus. We were almost bouncing up and down...mostly from excitement, possibly also from HOW TIRED WE WERE AFTER TRAVELING ALL DAY. :lmao:

DSC01881.jpg

As the bus began to roll, we were greeted by Mickey and friends on the DVD player. Jane yelled, “MOUSE!!! YAY!!” and spent the rest of the bus ride going back and forth between Jamie and me on the bus seats. You know, just to PROVE she has no need for this stupid confinement device called “a car seat”. The little girl in the seats across from us kept complaining about feeling sick. My first thought was “PLEASE don’t get sick on the bus!”

It was a LONG ride on the ME. I wasn’t expecting that at all. It probably seemed much longer because we were so ready to get there. But FINALLY, it was the moment I was waiting for. We were about to pass under that magical sign! As I saw it coming into view, I handed the camera to Jamie and asked him to take a picture since I was holding (i.e. wrestling) Jane.

“Take it now! Take it now!” I said over and over again. He probably took ten pictures as I sat there and instructed him. Then he took one when HE thought it needed to be taken. Which of course, turned out to be the best one. Yes, I have control issues.:rolleyes1

Finally we were on Disney property, but before our stop at Fort Wilderness, we dropped people off at POFQ and OKW. We ended up being the LAST people on the ME. This gave us a good opportunity to talk to Francisco, who was really wonderful. He loaded the kids up with stickers and wished us well as he dropped us off at Fort Wilderness.

We walked into the lobby of Ft. Wilderness and I was immediately thrilled with it. There was a large fireplace in the common room with a place for the kids to play checkers. There was already a boy playing, but Jay, being who he is, made friends quickly and soon had a game going. There was also a sitting area with a television and Jane was occupied by this for a bit. I stood in line for a while, waiting for my turn. As they called me forward and I got checked in, Jamie told me he was taking Jane outside because she was getting restless. I didn’t blame her. It had been a LOOOONG day and I was beginning to rethink our plans of going to Downtown Disney but I didn’t want to say anything yet. The CM gave me our cabin number and a map of the resort and sent me on my way. :scared1: My panicked look at getting us all to the cabin though must have sent red flags up because he asked if we’d like guest services to take us to our cabin. YES PLEASE! :rotfl: A wonderful Cast Member named Robert arrived quickly in his van and loaded us up. He was full of good information and gave us the run down on the bus services and things we needed to know about The Fort. He dropped us at our cabin and assured us that our bags would be following us shortly.

We opened the door to our cabin and were so excited to see what a great space it was. The deck was huge and had a picnic table, which was perfect for us to eat dinner on. And inside was a full kitchen, equipped with all that we would need for the week. Garden Grocer had already come by and unloaded our groceries for us. Perfect timing! I knew where to find the pack and play because of the boards, but when I looked, it wasn’t there. I made a call to the front desk and they told me where to find it. I told them again that we didn’t have one. They sent someone over to look for it and HE was quite surprised that it wasn’t there. :confused3 They brought one for us and I spent some time unpacking things and getting settled. While I unpacked, the kids all played outside and had a blast. We had a great space to play in out in the front of our cabin. The Fort area obviously used to be swamp land and so there are all these great tree stumps to walk around in. Kind of like a forest of tree stumps. Perfect for my kids who love to pretend. They were well occupied and I was glad to get unpacked and get settled.

We had planned to go to Downtown Disney on our first night. Jay was dying to hit the Lego store. No really. DYING. As in, the money that was burning a hole in his pocket was possibly going to kill him if he didn’t spend it SOON. :upsidedow But, after realizing that it was close to five already, Jane had hardly napped and everyone had been up since 4:15am, we nixed those plans and decided instead to grab quick service at The Fort and bring it back to our cabin to eat outside. So, we took the bus to the Settlement area and toured around a little bit. Instead of “Looping” in a golf cart, we “looped” on foot, checking out all the cool RV sites. There were some awesome ones that had been decorated for Halloween.

We walked for a while and then headed over to the Trading Post since the money that was slowly killing my son needed to be spent.:rotfl: The Trading Post was cute and Jay found a rifle that he loved. A LARGE rifle. This would pose a problem late...AHHHHH a CLIFFHANGER!!! Annie’s first purchase was a Minnie doll for her best friend, Emma. I bought a bottle of wine and Jamie bought a pint of scotch. Priorities and all. :rotfl2:

We then walked down to the Marina to check out the beach and the boat situation for the next morning. That being squared away, we took the kids over to the park while I ordered dinner. I picked up our refillable mugs that came with the quick service dining plan, filled those, put in our order for LOTS OF CHICKEN AND SIDES AND DESSERT (because this is what Disney wants you to get on the dining plan) and then took everybody their drinks on the playground. By the time I got back, our food was ready to be picked up. And it was A. Lot. Of. Food. We would not go hungry this week.

We got back on the bus and took everything back to our cabin. Every time the bus stopped Jane would yell, “Yay!!” She loved the buses and the boats! I loaded plates up with food and we took everything out to the deck. What a great area! And the weather was absolutely perfect. Could not have been more beautiful! After Jay finished eating, he took his rifle out among the forest of stumps and let his imagination run wild. That was when Jamie and I knew that when we made our return trip we would have to stay at The Fort again. Jay played and played. I think he would have been happy to stay out there all night with his new rifle. He got a few dents in it, which he said made it more realistic and I loved that he was in the middle of every nine year old boy’s dream. Jane was still being so sweet, which we were surprised about, since she had had such a long day. :goodvibes

After we ate, Jamie got Jane bathed while I did the dishes and then it was into bed with her. She cried for a minute, but was then OUT. Jamie and I went and sat out on the deck for a little down time while the kids stayed inside and watched the Disney channel. Soon we came back inside to get them bathed and ready to go to bed. I packed our park bag for the next day, we said prayers and put Jay and Annie to bed. We decided the big kids would sleep in the bedroom with Jane, while Jamie and I slept in the Murphy bed in the den. The Murphy bed was quite comfortable and I would do these sleeping arrangements again in a heartbeat.

Our only mistake this night was NOT giving Jane benedryl before bed. Yes. You read that right. I should have drugged my baby. :rolleyes1 We should have figured that the big kids would wake her in the middle of the night with their teeth grinding. I didn’t think about it though, and so at 3:30 the next morning, we could hear Jane talking to herself. “Hi! Hi! Day (Jay)!!! HI EEEEE (Annie)!!!! Hi!! Wheee!! Yay!!!” She never cried, but the talking went on for two hours. Jay was awake for much of it, but he never got out of bed, bless him. Eventually, she went back to sleep. Though I never did. Excitement over the Magic Kingdom! Come to think of it, maybe that was Jane’s whole problem! I was so worried about how Jane would act after her lack of sleep, that I had a hard time sleeping.

And so, that is where I will leave you for tonight. How would Jane act on our first park day? Would the lack of sleep, the traveling and the new experience overwhelm her and make her want to TAKE US ALL DOWN WITH HER?? :rotfl: You’ll have to wait to find out!
