Our first ever DL trip is coming up Aug 5-7 and we are staying at the Disneyland Hotel. Our plan is to arrive at DCA that Monday morning for EMH and head right to RSR to start the day.

I would rather avoid standing in line for 60+ minutes to ride again so I would guess that Max Pass would be my next option. However if we got on and off the ride within the first 30 minutes of the park being open on an EMH day, what kind of wait would the stand by line have at that point?

Also, with Max Pass, at what time of day should we start looking at RSR with return times after dark? Are they still going to disappear fast or has Guardians of the Galaxy helped make return times easier?

Yes, MP would be the next best option. Not likely a re-ride during EMH first 30 minutes will be very short.

To get an evening FP for RSR I would think you would start looking around 10 or 11AM. GOTG and the new Incredicoaster will disrupt old strategies and time lines so just pay attention to the RSR FP windows thru the DLR app.

So Max Pass doesn't work like FP+ at WDW. You don't reserve a time, you get the next available time?

Correct, you get the next available time. If you want an evening RSR FP (which is a good idea), keep watching the app (with maxpass) until an evening time appears.

While you might want to keep your group together for your first ride, you might consider single rider for later rides. Single rider line is often quite short (even empty) during EMH.

You should not have to wait too long during EMH after your first ride. There is also the single rider option if you can. During one EMH the single rider was empty for most of the hour....I was able to ride 4 times in a row! :goodvibes

So - having never ridden RSR, if we split up our party of 3 and did single rider, is it possible to "race" against each other?

possible but not guaranteed....that's hard to figure out..... and if single rider is empty, you may get put in the same car....

It's possible! We have! Although once we thought we would and then we ended up with a new car being added to the track so you just don't know until the race is about to start. GOTG has really helped free up the early morning crowd pressure on RSR!

If you watch the Disneyland ap, you'll get an idea when evening FP/MP return times might be during the time you are there.
We always starting watching wait times on the ap a few weeks before a trip.

EMH at DCA is great because it is only available to guests of the three Disney hotels. The people with a Magic Morning from their 3+ day park hoppers can only use that at Disneyland.

So, you should be able to ride RSR 2 or 3 times during EMH. As long as you are in the park at the beginning of it. Wait for first ride should be 5-10 min, second maybe 15-20.

That sounds good to me!

I'll just caution you that we've waited much longer than that to ride RSR during EMH it really depends on the day and how the crowd is that particular day.

We rode RSR today. It was not an EMH morning (9am opening), but I can report that we pulled a FP at 9:30am (30 minutes after opening) with a 1:00-2:00pm return. They were going quick (I was keeping an eye on the app as we walked from the parking structure to DCA).

That's a good point! We will be there right before the OP August 2nd-4th & plan to use our EMH at DCA on Friday August 3rd which would be at 7AM right? How busy do you think RSR will be if we ride it first thing during EMH? I'm thinking we will ride it once during EMH & then Max Pass it for a later evening time...Is this a good idea? We have never been in the summer before or stayed on site to take advantage of EMH!

When we went end of August 2016 (7am EMH) we had probably a 10 minute wait first thing for RSR with a 30-40 minute wait for a second ride. When we went in June 2017 (8am EMH) we usually did Guardians first then had a 45 minute wait for RSR. Not sure if that helps at all.

Tuesday they were going for 11:45-12:45 at 9:04, but both of these days had an unusual timing issue with DL opening at 8 with a 7am MM and then DCA opening at 9 (so, people able to book at 7 for a park that didn’t open for two hours). Maxpass in action!

RSR is the most in-demand FP by a mile, though!

Ahhhhh I forgot about MaxPass! Totally changes the game.

That definitely helps!:) I think we will hit RSR first thing during our 7am EMH & then try to time booking a evening RSR FP for a second ride. ;) How early do they let you in for a 7am EMH at DCA? Is it right at 7am or a little before?

I believe it was right at 7am. We only had one day to experience it so I'm trying to remember. I know our 8am EMHs we were let in a little early but it was almost entirely to line up for Guardians which had opened just over two weeks earlier.
