how to respond to rude people

I have had perfect strangers want to measure their kids against me. I am really not sure why but it doesn't make me feel very good. I am an adult and a grandmother give me some respect. I am fairly nice but sometimes I just want to strangle them.

I'm tall for a woman, and people are constantly commenting on it: "Wow, you're really tall!"

"Do you play basketball?"

"How tall ARE you?"

The worst is when it's an insecure guy and he starts actually ARGUING with me about my height: "I'm 6'0". There's no way you're 6'0" because you're taller than me. You must be at least 6'3"!"

Um, no.

It used to REALLY bother me when I was younger. Now I'm just over it, and I've given up on witty comebacks. Usually just a silent, disinterested nod makes them stop. I don't know why people think it's okay to comment on other people's appearance. If they really feel the need to talk and can't think of anything else to say, they should just restrict their remarks to the weather. ;)

I am short (4' 8") tall and I get so tired of people wanting to know how tall I am and remarking on it. Some are "boy I feel so tall next to you", or let's measure my kid next to you"??? There is a lot of people remarking on how short I am. Wow I didn't know I was short. It makes me feel even smaller. I need a come back too, any idea's?

I'm 4'8" as well and I usually just ignore them unless they are my students and then I tell them. Then the other kids will tell them "Don't mess with her, she may be small but she still write you up if you try her." Most of the kids just tell me I am cute. I smile and let that go.
As for the people that constantly ask why I am so short, I have a stock answer. God made me that way. Pretty much ends the discussion.

I have a side effect of having my lymph nodes removed due to breast cancer. It is called lymphedema. In other words, my left arm and hand look swollen. They are larger than my right arm and hand. It has improved over time, but was pretty bad the first few years after my surgery.

People were always walking up to me asking what was wrong with my arm. I got really tired of explaining the situation to total strangers. I started just saying that it was an artificial limb. In most cases, it stopped the questions. :confused3

My mother has the same issue as you. I have no idea if people ask her about it though. I will have to ask her when I see her tomorrow. If so, I will be sure to tell her about the artificial arm response. I love it. :rotfl:

It's a very common question.

I have 4 children all of a different race, and obviously adopted, and I have never been asked this question.

Uggh.. yes, this. I am 6' also.

Usually when people start with the "OMG! you are so tall!" I just say. "Yes, I am aware of that."

I used to work at a small store and one day a man walked in. My face came to his ummm private area. I looked at him and he looked at me. I told him that I wouldn't ask him about the weather up there if he didn't try to measure me against him. We both laughed.
I like the God made me that way answer, but how do you get around people putting their children right next to you so they can measure them against you? Sometimes they will just have their kid slowly walk over to me and slowly get closer to me to do it. Really???? Once people get to know me they seem to forget how short I am. My kids all treat me like any other Mum. I don't have any problems that way.
I know I have used the answer. I will tell you my height if you tell me how much money you make and what your debts are. I have been told that that is personal. Really????
