How to publish a website?

My wife is wanting to start a photography website and purchased the website name and everything and has created the website using Microsoft Sharepoint Design and said she can't figure out how to publish it. I know absolutely nothing about creating websites and HTML and all that crazy stuff, but my wife asked for my help. I figured I'd post some help here since people here know everything. Does she have to purchase something different now or is there a way to upload the website she created? If I'm not making any sense please understand I have no idea what she's talking about but she wants me to help figure it out :)

Most domain name registries (Go Daddy, etc.) have FTP client servers. What she needs to do is save it to a folder on her desktop then upload that folder to her FTP hosting server on the hosting account settings wherever she has her domain parked.

Ok so that's the issue...she bought the name through Go Dady, but not the hosting...so she'll have to pay whatever the hosting thing is monthly or whatever?

Right, and it's usually like 6.99 a year or so. If you had your own server you could do it that way but would need security certificates to make sure it wouldn't be hacked etc. This way they have all that set up and you just pay a certain amount. Once she gets the hosting account she will have another password and user id. She will log in there and then go to the FTP client. Once you do it a few times it goes like clockwork.

Hope this helps!

Oh, you are only interested in paid hosting.

Through Go Daddy the hosting says it is $4.99 for 3 months...so that'd be like $60/year for hosting...

Woah. That's a lot more than I remember it being.

To buy the domain it was pretty cheap ($7 for a year)...but for hosting it is more. There's a website "justhost" that is $3.45 a month so a little better, but would she have to pay more since she bought her domain through Go Daddy?

For some reason, and I have slept since then so forgive me :), but I seem to recall it being $60 for two years when you bought a domain name through them. Basically the longer you buy it for, the cheaper it is. I would contact GoDaddy or you could also host it elsewhere. Just b/c you bought your domain name one place doesn't mean you can't host it elsewhere if it ends up being cheaper.

Yes, which is what I said in my post. You can get free hosting, even if you use your own webpage templates.

With web hosting you get what you pay for. What needs to be figured is not just the amount of space needed but the throughput for all users. And what kinds of statistical information they are willing and able to provide you as well as support.

I'm going to hop in with a question since I'll be doing the same thing too soon.

How do you get the website exposure. Like if I typed into a google search how can I get my website up at the top of the search results?

meta keywords(I think that's what its called) I'm in the process of getting my site up too.
I have someone doing it for me(she's very reasonable and knowledgeable!).
All week long I have been adding my business to free listings and now when I type in dog, doggy, daycare, doggie ,training, petcare, it comes up EVERYWHERE!!!!! Your first paragraph needs to have all the keywords. Maybe photo, photographs, photography, pictures,
photo album, etc. You get what I'm doing. good luck!
