The response should be, Cousin, NO KIDS are coming, as it is an adults only party. You can even add in a Thank you for understanding.

I will share my similar story.

I got roped into hosting a 70th birthday party for my aunt. (it's a long story, but I have a big house) Naturally, it being a 70th birthday party, a vast majority of the guests were seniors. My cousin and her husband brought their 4 demon seed uncontrollable, undisciplined children. Mind you, my own kids weren't even in attendance. The part was in the winter and it was raining, and it was night time. The demon seed ran willy-nilly all over my house. The were climbing over the back of my 2 week old sofa, they turned all the electronics on, and left them running, in my husbands home office. They ran up and down the stairs. They were pushing seniors out of the way at the buffet table, sticking their hand in dishes. One of the 4 sat at the bar and ate a whole dish full of chocolates (okay I didn't say a word because I wasn't the one who had to sit up all night with a caffeinated kid with a belly ache) They locked the bathroom door from the inside. With a house full of seniors!!! Their parents did nothing. The sat on the couch, ate and drank and never said a word to these kids. It was a disaster.

OP stick to your guns. I like the idea of sending them a vague email saying "There has been a mistake regarding mom and dad's party, please call me at (555) 123-4567."

When they called I would just tell them, "I'm sorry you misunderstood, but this is going to be an adults-only party. I hope you can find a sitter because mom and dad really look forward to seeing you."

And this THIS is exactly the type of people that bring uninvited kids to these types of functions. The kind that don't watch their kids and let them run wild. They are probably, in fact, the reason the party is no kids to begin with.

Have you tried calling and speaking with her? Perhaps you can make her understand better by actually talking. That way, she can't claim misunderstanding.

I have been following this thread with anticipation. I too will be on vacation on Sunday, but I'm definitely going to have to check in on this one.

My mom dropped a bomb on my yesterday. She had 3 areas biopsied 10 days ago & all 3 came back malignant. Of all the weeks for her test results to come in, this was not the one! You know, I wanted to come right here to the DIS for some support because my head was (is) spinning, but it didn't seem appropriate. I don't want to be attention-seeking, as much as I love drama. But everyone's been so wonderful & supportive on this thread, so if anyone is the praying kind, if you'd throw an extra one in there for my mom I'd appreciate it. Now the whole thread up til now seems so petty & unimportant to me. I was having so much fun with this thread. At this point I don't care who comes & who they bring, let's just celebrate & have a good time. I don't know how I'm not going to fall apart on Sunday when it comes up (she is telling people), so I need some strength from somewhere!

If there's anything good to come from her announcement, it's that I'm cleaning & scrubbing like a MANIAC, trying to keep busy & keep my mind occupied. I hired someoen to come today to clean the windows inside & out (there are 50 of them on 3 levels, I just couldn't do it myself), I think I will follow him around & whatever room he finishes, I will go in & houseclean. Twice if I have to, to stay busy! My mom offered to come help me - we're very much alike - when the going gets tough, the tough get going!

Tara, I'm so very sorry to read about your mom. I will certainly keep her and your family in my thoughts.

I know you say at this point now you don't care who shows up but now, more then ever, you need to be firm. Your mom I'm sure is stressed and it's going to be tough for her to talk with people on Sunday so the last thing she needs is possibly having some kids running around. You don't want her stressing and getting upset. So stand firm with your cousin and if you need to be flat out rude.
