How to get started, transfers

Okay,

I need a list of exactly what to do to do iron on transfers to t-shirts. Does anyone have a link? Transfers for dummies or something? Assume I know nothing about computers! That's what my husband would say and I would like to do one project without having to ask him, which is like the blind leading the blind anyway. He would be so impressed if I could figure this out, without asking him at least once.

I have started trying to collect images I might like on our family t-shirts. I right click the images on the threads that designers are sharing and save as, to put the pictures in files? Does that give me the right type of file to print later?

I have a HP Photosmart all in one printer C6180 to be specific. Is that the right type of printer to print transfers? I want to use the dark transfers, I won't be printing on white shirts, and don't want to mess with mirror images anyway.

I have plenty of time as trip isn't till June and won't start this project till Jan, which is a good thing as it might take me a while to figure out how to do it, buy the supplies and get started.

Please help, I don't want to use the kind of language I usually use when trying to figure out my computer around my 4 year old.

Once you find a design you like...I copy and paste them into Word to print or you can save them in the same file you keep photos. Make sure that you are copying the largest image...it is better to go into their photobucket or wherever they keep all of their files and open up the image. Normally when it firsts opens in photobucket...it is a small picture of the original pictures size...so make sure you open it. Once you open it...it still isn't the full size. Click on the full size tab to get the original size. Otherwise, if you copy the first small picture...that is the size you will be saving and if you try to enlarge it...it will become blury.

Transfer Paper: There are two types light for light colored t-shirts where you don't mind the color of the t-shirt coming through the image where ever there is white or Dark transfers for dark colored t-shirts or images where the white needs to be white...not the color of the t-shirt. The best dark transfers I have used are from www.amymickey.com. I have used several light colored transfers and so far the avery and hp are the ones most people on this website recommend. Most everyone likes Amy Mickey's transfer paper. They are a little bit more expensive around $25 for 10...but they are worth it. You won't have typical transfer paper problems like cracking, print colors bleeding when they get wet, etc. One warning...if you do use Amy's transfer paper...be careful that your iron is not too hot. I bought a red t-shirt from hobby lobby and my iron was too hot so the color of the t-shirt bled through the design. Once I turned the iron down...I didn't have anymore problems.

Whatever transfer paper you use...there will be good directions on how to print using the transfer paper with your product. If you use a light transfer paper you will have to "mirrror" the image...but you don't have to do that with Amy's dark transfer paper.

Buy a few extra t-shirts and have a little extra transfer paper...as no matter how hard you try...you are bound to make a mistake. It's okay...we all do!

I was a first timer and used Amy's transfer paper with fantastic results. She includes very easy to follow instructions and you can't go wrong. Amy is very quick in getting your order out also. I got both of my orders in 2 days. She is also very helpful if you have any questions.

I put all of the designs I would like to use in "my pictures" and they are easy to get and print from there. You can decide on the size there too when you get to the printing part. You will find this in the advanced part of the steps to printing. Dark transfers are great, just remember to trim what you don't want to iron on the shirts. I also, use jiffyshirts.com to order my shirts. They are great to work with and they have many different type of shirts. Plus, lots of colors. And if need be, very easy to return. I like the Giland ladies tees..they fit so much better than any of the other brands. Good luck and happy ironing

Thanks, everyone. I am excited to try it as soon as I get through the holidays. Today got xmas card pictures taken and ordered, and trimmed the tree which was our last xmas decoration to put up. I got us matching family pjs I was thinking cute and cheap, not realizing we were all in polar fleece in texas. We were sweating our butts off, but we looked cute in the pictures! Just need to address the xmas cards when they come in and finish shopping, wrapping presents.

I would have loved to make some cute holiday shirts but probably won't get to them, I'm thinking. We were wanting to take a xmas trip either to Disney or ski trip but couldn't quite swing it so I was really excited about the 4/3 promo for June. I will definitely start making some trip shirts after the holidays though.

I already started putting clip art in my picture folders so that is a relief! I'm glad that's a good place. I'm going to try to make some family theme shirts and some with everyone's favorite characters.

Now I'm confused. How and where do you find the largest image to copy and how large are they?
