How to get a 504 Plan started?

Thanks for your responses - I never thought to ask on the disability forum...

I am just trying to get through this year for her, and then I really want one for next year.

Anyway, I have even got into it with the assistant principal and called the special ed office about it. They retaliated by calling the public health nurse on my daughter. The school's stance was that kids can't come to school till they are toilet trained (and able to make it to the bathroom, hold it a little, etc). This made me mad..and I even told them, it seems to me that you are discriminating against her because she can walk. If she was in a wheelchair, this would be a non-issue. But they wouldn't accept our 4 doctor's notes as anything meaningful. I have even printed off several research studies online, that said incontinence is a complication of her type of dwarfism..but apparently the school knows more than me, who lives with her everyday, or the doctors. :confused3

I would so recommend going to the state and you may even need to look for the advocates for Children with Special needs for help. Our school has children that are in pull ups and such even in the older grades. Thet cannot iscriminate based off yoru child's Special Needs. Contact the media if you can't get anywhere else. It is ridiculous that some schools will embarass a child. Let me see if I can find some information on avocates for you.

I am a Guidance Counselor. 504's are my business. You really should not even get a hiccup getting a 504 in place for the mentioned medical issues. Certain mental health issues also often quailify a child, as well. Any condition which would impede the learning process and/or school day quailfies one -- in most circumstances. Have the treating Dr. write a note noting the medical need for a 504... I've even seen them as a short little thing on a prescription pad ... that would work for us at my District. I'd then, as the parent, write a letter formally requesting an 504 meeting take place as per Dr's orders and attach a copy of the Dr's note. CC's to Guidance Coun, Princ, and Director of Spec Ed/Pupil Services. Do note that in some Districts the Direct of Spec Ed does not oversee 504 plans, as 504 is not technically a Spec Ed/Learning Support Service.

If you get resistance you should mention getting an advocate, lawyer, speak to the Asst Super or Super of Schools, and/or ask for an audience with the school board to voice concerns. Just threatening those things usually gets the ball rolling.

504's must be updated annually. Keep track of the date it was signed and be sure it is updated at the same time the following calendar year (not school year). Contact the school if the date rolls near and you've heard nada. Also, I'd check in with the Counselor, teacher, nurse, etc. on a regular basis to be sure the 504's plans are being enacted as agreed upon. Best of luck.

I think its interesting, I am an education major, next semester I will be student teaching with a kindergarten class and that is my BIGGEST annoyance....teachers who DON'T allow children to use the bathroom when needed. I don't understand, your child has a medical condition it is not as if your child is trying to get out of class.
Now the teachers KNOWS your child can't "hold it", to me that is neglect.
Shame on her for not accomodating your child!
I hope everything works out for you and your little one.

Thank you all for your kind words. My hubby just thinks that I am over reacting & to "just let it go" since she isn't majorly effected by it right now.

I just can't......the teacher has been told to not maker her "hold it" for any reason & the teacher herself has actually told me that she has. :headache: Seriously.

Again, thanks for all the support:)
