How to convince non-Disney DH to buy DVC

Hiya everybody!

I am a total Disney freak, but I somehow married a non-Disney person (he does have a multitude of other redeeming qualities, however). I would love to go to FL and CA Disney resorts yearly, but can only get DH there about once every 10 years or so. We live in N. California and he hasn't been to DL since 1989.

This year I am going to WDW in July with a girlfriend, and have managed to convince DH to go back with me in January (he will golf solo and I will park solo). I am pretty much already sold on DVC and just need to convince him.

We travel extensively, been all over the world. Our usual vacation is a big trip once a year (3 weeks or so). We do not have children. We like to eat at gourmet restaurants. We are not into sports/outdoor activities (except golf for him). We are not retired.

This year money is tight as we are going on an African safari/London trip for 3 weeks in September, plus a week in New England this August and my WDW trip this July. So I think buying this year is out. DH rarely finances big purchases except for our house.

My question is, (finally), what arguments can I use to persuade him to buy DVC?

I'd say your only hope is to either drag him to a DVC resort for a stay of some sort and hope he likes it or buy a small points package to use without him.

I think that I would just purchase a small points package on the resale market that you do not need to finance. I am not up on the current resale prices, but I would think you can get a small points package for an average of $100 per point including the closing costs (and I think this is probably a high estimate). This way you don't need to finance and you can get your hubby used to the resorts. This is also assuming that you usually do not stay at the high end resorts like the Grand Floridian. If you are used to that, then DVC may not be for you. But, if you usually stay at the low to moderate resorts, then a stay at DVC should impress him.

Good Luck!

Rent points for a 1-bedroom concierge at AKL and take a safari or a 1-bedroom boardwalk view at BWV where you will be close to EPCOT and F&W or try out a couple of signature restaurants. I would also go in late Nov or Dec. We don't like the heat and the Christmas decorations are worth the trip. Besides, everybody likes Christmas.

I would really recommend selling him on non-Disney amenties of the DVC resorts:

HHR is great for golfing (which is really an excellent golf haven), as well as OKW & SSR as they have the Buena Vista Golf Course going by these resorts.

OKW also has a marina for boat rentals. SSR has a pool table. Every DVC resort has excellent fitness centers, saunas, jacuzzis and lovely pools. Maybe he just wants to lounge by a pool after golfing. He can can even go parasailing on Bay Lake from the Contemporary Resort, if he wants to be brave!

Look up the amenities of the resorts and show them to him, along with what options he has to stay at non-Disney resorts (which can include the Interval Internation trades).

Try to sell him on the non-disney trips, like Spain, Hawaii, and everywhere else. You guys seem to travel all over, so if those types of trip interest him, he may be into the DVC that way. It doesn't have to be all about Disney, although there is nothing wrong with that. There are discount for golfing at Disney, and great water sports. With vacations being paid for for the next 40 something years he may like that. Did you get the packet from the DVC with that giant purple book? If not call the DVC and ask for that, the info is great and extensive. Where you can actually show him all the places you can go.

Good luck.

Since he is a golfer, the golf could be a nice selling point. We love going to Disney for the golf and the DVC golf member ship is super and saves a lot of money on green fees. I think the golf courses are excellent resort type courses and two of them, Palm and Magnolia, host a PGA Tour event every fall. As another poster also pointed out there is also Hilton Head. Golf every where there.

Rent points for a 1BR SSR for this trip. He can golf right there, the restaurant there is decent, and the two of you might enjoy a spa appointment together.

Work the golf angle. The golf membership is $50 and saved me $100 on one round. Seriously, $59 instead of $159. Thats good for a whole foursome too. You can also now book early tee times which was the biggest knock on the DVC golf membership, due to afternoon heat. A round can be as cheap as $35 with a cart.

I agree on the golf angle. When we go to DVC, DH usually golfs every morning while I do the parks solo. Also, tell him the joys of the HHI resort. And there's excellent golfing there. I think HHI is DH's favorite resort-so much golf to choose from!

Work the golf membership angle, and rent some points to stay in a 1bd in a dvc resort. That is what sold my DH on buying- he loved the accomodations.
