How the Other Half Lives ~ Updated 10/22: I Forgot Something!

Oh, it's over. :sad2: I still love the fact that you guys ended up at Concierge Level. That's still a dream of mine someday. I just don't have good luck.

I agree with how awesome your luck was. One day i hope to stay concierge! So I hope you do a TR for the trip you said you just took so we can compare, and see if life after concierge is still magical :)

Great TR, I hope that we will be able to do a Christmas trip some day. Disney is sooo smart, they seem to know the exact day the kids are out of school and then their prices double!!!!

Fun last night to end your trip! Ugh, seeing Disney all Christmas-y REALLY makes me miss being there during the holidays! :sad1:

It's always so sad to leave Disney, but leaving Disney and the Poly must be even harder! And club level? I would have just moved in! :cool1:

Enjoyed reading the last few updates :goodvibes

I like how the recipe for the Contemporary's gingerbread display includes "1 chef Mickey and 25 friends" :cutie:

We arrived home to snow as well after our December trip... we had far less snow than it looks like you had, but we don't deal with well in England - the airports had to close the day we got back  !

Sad your trip report has come to an end, really enjoyed it! Will you be doing one for your October trip? :rolleyes1

Sadness. Not my favorite trailer at all! Your Disney year is over!

It did sound like a nice last evening anyway, and I loved seeing all the mini golf pics. (Can't remember if I commented on that update?) We're thinking about trying that one out in December, if I don't jump and buy APs again. It looks like so much fun!

You've really got me in a Christmas mood with all the decoration pics. Loved them! I'll agree with you on the Contemporary. Definitely not as impressive as the other pictures you've posted. That resort always seems boring to me anyway though.

The hidden Mickey cheese curd when you got back to all that snow was too perfect. :thumbsup2

Can't wait to read your final thoughts and see this most recent trip!

Just make sure the kids in the room next door are nice and noisy...that worked for us! :rotfl: It was really amazing to stay Club Level. Probably won't happen again, unless we get another magical upgrade, though. pixiedust: Every time we saw the Hawaii building on our recent trip, we wanted so badly to go back inside. :sad1:

Indeed, life after concierge is still magical! :wizard: Of course, we did spend an awful lot of time at the Poly, even though we weren't staying there... :rolleyes1 And, yes, there will be a trip report starting soon!

I hope you get to do a Christmas trip too! We are lucky that we could go in the off-season (early December is cheap). I know it's way more expensive when the kids are on break!

We really wanted to move in! We kept saying pitifully, "We live here now, right?" Unfortunately, the Magical Express came for us anyway! :sad2:

And I know what you mean about the Christmas decorations and such. It really is a magical time to be there. It seemed strange this last trip to see the castle without icicle lights on it!

It's funny, I just noticed that when I was posting that picture! I think we were too busy running back to the monorail platform for me to even read it at the time! :rotfl:

I remember that ending on your TR! Luckily, Minnesota handles snowfall pretty well, so we didn't have any travel issues on the way back!

Sure will! I'll post the link when it starts!

Those courses really were a lot of fun! I would just try to go at an off-time (we went right after opening), so you can take your time and enjoy all the details. I think the boys would probably get a kick out of them. And the theming puts you in a festive mood too. Or you can jump and buy APs again! :yay:

It was quite the letdown after nearly missing the ME just to see it. I think it would be more fun if it had been the first resort we'd visited, rather than the last!

The hidden Mickey cheese curd when you got back to all that snow was too perfect. :thumbsup2
And it was tasty too! :rotfl:

Final thoughts coming right up!

So, this is the first time I’ve ever attempted a “final thoughts” post, like I see in so many other trip reports. Because we’ve had so many trips, I’ve always been able to just jump right into the next trip’s report. And I could do that this time too, as we just returned from WDW. And I will be starting that TR very soon, but I thought that the Year of Disney (2010) deserves some sort of wrap-up before moving on.

To review, and for those that didn’t follow the whole year, we had Annual Passes and made 5 trips to WDW in 2010. We had made one trip prior to the Year of Disney, in September 2009, which left us wanting more. It had been Dug’s first trip to WDW and my first since more-or-less childhood. We started dreaming about going back and escaping the Minnesota winter that lay ahead. We tentatively booked some ADRs for January 2010 “just in case.”

Due to a confluence of circumstances, we made the choice to do a (most likely) once-in-a-lifetime Year of Disney. We had just finished aggressively paying off all non-mortgage debt and had significant extra cash flow from that. We wanted to use part of that to do something fun for ourselves, as we had lived very low-budget/low-frills for our whole marriage so far (and before that). It was also our fifth anniversary year, which seemed a good reason to travel (we both love to travel). We considered taking a big overseas trip and Greece was at the top of our list. But that is not cheap, especially the way we would want to do it (i.e. not a quick trip and not backpacking). Somehow, we realized that we could do several trips to WDW for the price of one trip to Greece. Although, with some of the upgrades and trip extensions we did, the Year of Disney did cost more than a trip to Greece would have, we still had several thousand dollars left of our extra cash flow that we added to our savings (so, we weren’t totally irresponsible!) This year, that extra cash flow is going towards other non-travel savings goals (cars, etc.), which is why our October 2011 trip was so budget-oriented ($1400 total for a week).

It really amazes me how much financial flexibility there is for a WDW trip. I saw a thread somewhere else on the DIS about “how much do you spend on a trip to WDW?” Skimming through the answers, I was amazed to see that some people were spending as much on ONE trip as we were on ALL FIVE trips combined! Of course, they were usually staying Club Level and generally living it up, but still…I’d pick 5 nice trips over 1 luxurious trip any day! I’m so glad we did it this way. And, hey, we did end up having one pretty luxurious trip, as you just saw!

Surprisingly, that Poly Club trip was not the most expensive one. It was actually about $1500 less than our January trip. In January, we had to buy our Annual Passes and our Tables in Wonderland card (big expenses), we stayed for 10 days (the longest trip), and we paid for airfare (free with miles in December). January was over $4k, due to all of that. Our cheapest trip was our August weekend for $600-ish, which even included airfare (bargain trip!) I am, admittedly, a deal hunter. All of the trips included significant discounts: bounceback rates, Annual Passholder rates, Tables in Wonderland dining discounts, bargain airfare, first nights at Pop Century, etc. I can see how someone who just books a package without looking for deals could spend a lot more. But these deals allowed us to get more trips in and stay at nicer places than we could have otherwise. Enough financial ponderings, though!

One of the best things about doing a Year of Disney was that we were able to attend several different special events that WDW does at different times of the year. We attended Star Wars Weekends in June, Food & Wine in November, and enjoyed all the holiday stuff in December, as you just read about. All of our trips were very different from each other. That was really helpful if we ran into someone who questioned why we were going to WDW so often…once we told them about the different events, they understood! We still haven’t been to the Flower & Garden Festival, but otherwise, we’ve covered most of the “seasonal” stuff. All of the trips were so unique because of these events. It’s really hard to pick a favorite, as they were all so special in their own ways. We did particularly enjoy Food & Wine, however, and that’s what we ended up going back to this year (although the weather for it in 2010 was way better than 2011).

The other great thing about all the trips (and the AP discount) was that we got to stay at so many different resorts. We stayed at: the Polynesian (one night in January), the Wilderness Lodge (one night in January), Port Orleans Riverside (the rest of January), Pop Century (one night in June), Animal Kingdom Lodge (the rest of June), All Star Music (August), Pop Century (one night in November), Beach Club Villas (the rest of November), and the Poly Club (December). We usually had 40% or so off and went during low seasons, which made the deluxes feasible. Obviously, we really love the Poly. If you follow the upcoming TR, you’ll see that we spent an awful lot of time at the Poly for people staying at Pop Century! In second place, we’d pick Animal Kingdom Lodge. And it’s a very close second. We really loved our stay there. The buildings are beautiful, the rooms are great, the savanna balconies are amazing, and the dining on site is fabulous!

In closing, a Year of Disney was exactly what we needed in 2010. It’s probably the only time that various circumstances in our lives will align just right to make it work. But it’s a memory we’ll have and cherish forever. It’s been a great way for us to spend time together, plan for things together, and enjoy things together. We really had a great time! We have so many wonderful stories and memories from these trips…and thanks to all these TR’s, I’ll actually be able to remember them!

Thanks for sharing the journey with us.

And, yes, there will definitely be a TR for the trip we just took. I’ll post the link here and on the PTR once it’s started. Hope to see you there!

I hate that you are wrapping up, I've loved the tr and the photos.
The year of Disney was indeed magical for you all. thanks for sharing it with us in these tr!

I love how everything worked out for these trips. It was such a fun read with how many different times of year and resorts you were able to try! You definitely have some wonderful memories to hold onto now. Thanks for sharing your fun with us! :thumbsup2

I just finished catching up on your TR and reading your closing notes. Thanks for doing such a thorough job!

I am actually headed to Orlando for work in November and I am thinking about getting a Christmas party ticket for one of the nights I am there. I have never been for the holiday decorations, and your TR is defintiely making me want to go!

My daughter goes to U of M. She is always commenting on how many more people could fit on a Disney bus. And that people don't know the bus rules. She flew Delta to MCO and returned via Sun Country. She was impressed with the service Sun Country gave.

Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed! I agree, we have some great memories now!

Thanks for reading! If you can get to the MVMCP, I think you'd really enjoy it...just make sure to go in with a plan of exactly what you want to see and do...the time flies!

People definitely don't know bus rules at Disney! I've heard Sun Country is great, but it's never worked out for us to fly them. Our miles and free checked bags are with Delta, so it makes it tough to go with something else. We always look, though!

Hi, all. If anyone is still lurking around here, I just remembered one more thing I was going to include in the TR!

Our last night at the Magic Kingdom, we visited the Laugh Floor. And I was in the show! I was the person where they ask where you're from and then they say it's known for it's Eiffel Tower. :rotfl: It was fun!

That's all!
