How the heck do you get a straight edge while painting the near the ceiling?

To avoid getting paint on ceiling, I use an angle edge brush and never use tape.

I seal the tape by painting over the edges with white paint before I start painting with the new color. This way I get straight lines and no paint seeps underneath the tape.

This is a great tip, thanks!!

Yep that's the way I do it. Err a....I mean my husband does it.

A really good way to get him to paint when you want is to buy all the supplies and anounce that you are going to do a project and want to do it by yourself. Paint one wall, my DH is somewhat ocd all he has to do is see one spot on the ceilling and before I know it he's done the whole room. Like magic the whole room is perfectly painted.

HAHAHA! I do this too! My DH never tapes, he goes very close with the angled brush, and then to make it "perfect" he goes around with a dixie cup of paint and an artist brush and makes it perfect. He is soooo anal-retentive! But he does a great job!
Good luck!

We have always used a paint edger like this.

It is a pad with wheels on the edge. It takes a little while to get used to the amount of paint to use but after that, it is very easy to use.

I just used this for the first time in my dining room and was blown away by it! It's GREAT! So easy to edge without tape! The edges look great and I did all of them (plus around a chair rail!) in under half an hour.

The easiest way (and the way the professionals do it) is to use a 1 1/2" angled trim brush, and forget the tape, edgers, etc. Don't skimp too much on the purchase, since a good brush can make all of the difference, and will last forever if you clean it properly. Purty is a good brand. Home Depot sells that brand, not sure about Lowe's.

This is what I do too. We have the textured ceilings and just using the brush has worked the best.

I do use that edge tool, the one with the pad and rollers on it for around windows and doors and baseboards since the edges are flat and straight.
