How safe really are In Room Safes?

I am curious to know how safe you feel the "in room safes" are at resorts/hotels. etc. Has anyone experienced problems, theft or anything from using them? I am assuming the front desk at the hotels or resorts have some sort of back up plan if you cannot get into them. Would like to hear from your good or bad experiences with them. I get a little tired of carrying around all our vacation necessities everywhere my DH and I go. :Pinkbounc

Interesting question. I've used in-room safes in many places without giving it a second thought. I've never heard of any problems with them, though I'm sure there are some stories out there. And yes, I'm sure the front desk can get into any safe if there is a problem, though I'm also sure they'll charge you for the privilege if you lose your key or forget your combo.

HAVE STAYED AT DISNEY HOTELS ABOUT 12 TIMES AND NEVER HAD A PROBLEM WITH THEIR SAFES. tHAT'S THE BEST THING ABOUT THEIR ROOMS.

Appreciate your inputs, maybe I am just a tad paranoid. I guess there are really not alot of people out there who are too concerned about using them. Must be a good thing!!

Thanks guys,
Siobhan :D

They've got to be safer than leaving your valuables in a drawer or some other easily accessible spot in your room. I think most hotel thefts are crimes of opportunity. The thief sees something sitting out and grabs it. I don't think hotel safecracking is a popular crime.

I agree with the last poster that most crimes are a crime of opportunity. If you left money, jewlery, etc sitting out it is a temptation. I have had great luck with honest employees at the Disney hotels. I have left a tip out on occaision and forgot to leave a note that the money was left there intentionally and it has not been taken (always taken when i leave a note).

Another "trick" that I have used on occasion is to take an empty shampoo/conditioner whatever bottle and rolled up my money or placed my jewlery inside of it. Then just left it packed in my suitcase or a drawer. The things inside certainly aren't locked up or safe, but to the casual thief (crime of opportunity) it seems that it deters them.

Also, you could choose to place cash on your account to your room and then use your room key to charge at restaurants or shops or whatever. Makes life very simple.

Also, if you had something really, really, valuable that you are worried about, I believe that some of the resorts have "house safes" and you could inquire at the front desk about placing items there.

Good Luck,
Brenda
