How safe is Anaheim?

I take my grandkids and stay on Harbor.
I feel perfectly safe walking to and from the parks.

There are generally many other people/families right there with us.

As others have said, be aware of your surroundings, just as you do anywhere.

Enjoy your trip.

It gets interesting in the area around the 7-Eleven and the generic convenience store at Katella and Harbor. Mostly it's people on beer runs who may already be intoxicated. However, I never felt threatened walking in the area with a young child.

On my last trip, I stayed at the Red Lion on my own, then the Portofino with family. Both are past this 'interesting' area. There were a couple of homeless people with signs, but I never felt unsafe walking to/from the hotel on my own. When the park closes, there will be heaps of people walking back to their hotels, so I wouldn't be worried about that.

The only time I felt slightly ill at ease on my last trip was walking from the Portofino to the Marriott Suites in Garden Grove on my own with my large suitcase. I just felt a little vulnerable, and as it has been pointed out, the crowds/tourism die down a lot as you get further out. You won't have to worry about that at Castle Inn though.

I did see an incident one day on the way back to the hotel for an afternoon break (I was on my own). Just as I was crossing the lights at the end of Disney Way, coming down Harbor in the opposite direction to me was what appeared to be a couple having a domestic. They were getting quite aggressive, shouting, swearing and striking out at each other. I was about to cross the lights again to walk on the opposite side of the road, but just then a police car showed up out of nowhere and sorted them out. It was like magic! So while things do happen, I was pleased to see it was taken care of within minutes, it wasn't something that was going to really affect me, and it would have been easy enough to avoid.

I agree with PPs, the area immediately adjacent to DLR is perfectly safe. Almost every single use on the streets bordering DLR that tourists frequent is DLR or convention based. You have to go out of your way for things to feel sketchy. And even then, it isn't as if Anaheim is a slum by any means.

There are no absolutes. Our favorite hotel in the area is the Hilton. It's generally pretty good, but I've seen people staggering down the hallways drunk like they'd spend a night in Vegas drinking and gambling. It's not exactly what I wanted to expose my kid to, but what we saw can happen almost anywhere.

We have only ever stayed across the street. I feel totally safe during the day. At night I am always more aware of my surroundings. I have five girls ranging from 13-3 years old and I just am more aware of the area I'm in. At night there are attendants out in front of some the hotels and there are tons of other DL guests walking around too. I think as when you go anywhere, you just need to be aware of your surroundings. :thumbsup2
