that's the way it is in our school district. Personally, our DS needs to be occupied all year 'round, so we seek out programs.golfgal said:The only summer school offered in our district is for jr and sr high students that fail classes during the school year and need to make them up. I don't know if there is a charge.
when we lived in Corinth, TX there was a wonderful, outstanding program at TX Women's University. DS, between 4th & 5th grade took Biology (they dissected starfish, frogs, clam worms etc), Music Composition, on comp & we got a disc of his project; CAD design, ditto disc. They also offered water color, stock market, rocketry & just a myriad of other programs. The classes did not have more than 14 students & the day was 10 am to 2 or 3 pm, for about 5 or 6 weeks This was in '98 & the cost was minimal(under $150 for the whole kaboodle).
wish to heavens we had something like that around here!
last year was the lfinal year he was eligible, but we have sent him to the Johns Hopkins summer programs for Talented Youth (CTY). check this out with yr guidance office or PM me. It is for younger(cut off age is 17)children who have passed one or more parts of the SATs. DS only passed(very high) the verbal/compostion areas but that was enough to qualify. The CTY program is very expensive (about $3000 for 3 weeks, inc room & board, not transportation or books) but is intensive learning & hours, relaxed atmosphere, small classes & college level texts.
