How much for high school graduation gift?

My son graduated from HS 2 years ago and I was shocked at how many people gave him $100. I'm going to a good friend's son's graduation this week and plan to give him $100. On the other hand, same son just left for a friend's grad party and put $20 in a card. And only because I told him he had to or her would have gone with no gift.

We do $100 for family members. Dd has three friends graduating this weekend, we did cards with $20 in cash.

My DD graduated this year and got mostly checks for $50. She got a couple $40 ones and a couple $100. I invited all my coworkers but didn't want gifts from them. I only wanted them to help up celebrate. I have been in my current job for 15 years and so my coworkers have basically seen my kids grow up. In fact, I didn't want/expect gifts from anyone. We just wanted to celebrate this milestone.

I've been giving out $50 to my dd's friends and my nieces who graduated this year.

I've gotten seven graduation announcements this spring, and no way am I spending $700 on my friends' kids. I sent $20 in a card. If it were a close family member, I would send more ($50-$100)

I've given $50 to the girls who used to babysit for DD when they graduated. However, we're friends of their families and the girls have always treated DD liked a beloved little sister. Nieces and nephews have gotten $100.

For co-workers' kids and a friend's grandkid I wouldn't go over $25.

My DS is graduating Tuesday and we are having a Graduation Cookout tomorrow. I have given $25 to his friends and my DS has received cards in the mail for the most part with the same amount in them. He has received a couple from dear family friends with $65 and $75 in them. Grandparents usually give $100 (this is my second child to graduate high school).
I think 20-25 is a good amount.

For 8th grade graduation ( I know some areas don't do anything for 8th grade but we have big parties here) I give a tee shirt to the high school they are going to. If they are really close friends I get them a sweatshirt to the high school.

For high school graduation I get them tee shirts, lanyards, string bags, sweatshirts etc something for the college they are going to. I go on the schools website and order from the bookstore. They can exchange if things don't fit.

Some items are only $10 or $15 dollars. You can spend as little or as much as you want and they have no idea if you're being cheap :) The kids like getting something for their new schools too.

My sons graduated from 8th grade and HS last year. Between my friends kids and my kids friends we "had" to buy 17 presents. I saved a bundle (and spent a bundle) doing it how I did. I haven't had any college graduations yet. Not sure what I'll do then......
