How much do you tip?

Sorry guys if this is not on the right board, but we are leaving in 2 days. We are having a driver pick us up and take us to our hotel on property, but we not get the same driver who picked us up when we go back to the airport. Our question is how much would you tip the driver and how much would you tip the people that bring in your luggage, the cleaning of your room while you are there and etc... Thanx for your help...

We tip the towncar driver $10, on each leg, because it may not be the same driver. We give the bellhop a couple dollars (we usually only have a couple bags) and the maid $1 pp per day for cleaning our room. Hope this helped!

Thank you so much. Yeah that helps....It's kind of funny because after the wedding we are going to the atm..lol a groom in his tux getting out to get money.....

I didn't even notice your countdowns....Congratulations on your upcoming wedding! :D

going rate is about $10 Per trip driver, 1.50 to 2 bucks per bag for anyone who handles them. that means sky caps bell hops etc. and maids 2 per day per person and leave each day as maids may be different each day.
Frommers and the other Disney guide books have sections covering this.

What about tipping the boat driver (captain?) on a wishes or illuminations cruise?

We tipped housekeeping $5/day (there are 5 of us) and $10 on the last day. I tipped the skycaps $10 and $15 (one was much friendlier and more helpful than the other) for 5 bags. Bell services I was unsure of...I was figuring on $2 per bag, but one man removed the luggage from our car (7 bags) and put it on a cart, then another took it to our room. To me, $15 each seemed like a lot for what amounted to less than 5 minutes of time, so I gave them $10 each.

Is that common for two people to handle your luggage between your car and your room? How does everyone else handle that? I didn't want to seem cheap, but I really didn't feel what either of them did warranted even the $10 I gave, let alone the $15 I'd planned on. $15 total, sure, but not each. What should I have done? What is "right?"

Tracey,

The same thing happened to us on our first trip - two different people handled our bags just to get them to the room, one from the car to the cart and one from the cart to our room. I got all flustered and didn't know how much to tip each of them. I ended up tipping more than I had expected. As a result of that experience, we have gone to great pains to carry our own luggage (sometimes quite a ways) from our car just to avoid this situation. But next trip we're flying, so we'll have to deal with this situation again. I sure hope someone here knows how to handle this. I want to tip appropriately, but it does seem a bit much to tip both people when each one just handles the luggage for a few minutes.

At least I feel better knowing I wasn't the only one with this dilemma, LOL, thanks!

The valet will take your luggage, and store it. Depending on if your room is ready or not, they will store it in a bin, and log it.

The bellman is the one that delivers the luggage to the room. They're usually the ones that do the most work. At Port Orleans and Caribbean Beach, some buildings do not have elevators, and the bellman has to lug the luggage up the stairs.

Hi Tyler! Thanks for the reply, but I'm still confused. Do I tip both the valet and the bellman? If so, it sounds like I should at least tip the bellman more since he does the most work. What about the valet, especially if all they do is wheel the luggage into the lobby while we check in? We'll be arriving around 9pm, so there won't be any storing involved. I'd prefer just to carry the luggage in myself and then tip the bellman when he brings the luggage to the room, but I know the valet is usually right there ready to take the luggage. I want to do the right thing. Help!

I personally dislike the idea of tipping... from what I understand in Europe, they pay decent wages, and tipping is not expected. But between Skycaps, drivers, valets, and bellman, that's a big chunk of change!

This is why I like "Luggage Assistance" in the Value resorts... tipping is neither neccessary or expected.

But for Bell Services... to be honest, I'm not sure what the appropriate rates are for tipping. Some say $1/bag, others $2/bag... personally, I'd just figure out a lump sum... $5 for the valet, and $10 for the bellman, for example. Obviously more or less depending on what you feel is appropriate, and how well the service you get is.

We had so much "Stuff" not all technically bags...during our 2 week trip in Dec I ended up tipping close to the national debt....

We had 6 duffles small, camera bag, computer bag, box approx. 18 X 6 X 6 inches, 2 extra large soft bags, 2 garbage bags full of winter coats, and stuffed animals and such from christmas, bag full of misc grocery items, 2 backpacks, 1 medium soft bag, the bell cart was full to the top...I tipped about $35 dollars....each time....1-into BWV, 2-out BWV, 3 in Dolphin, 4 out Dolphin, 5 in BWV, 6 out BWV......

I realize that most people don't move that many times but whew...

Wow Zurg's wife!!! That is a lot of cash being put out there.

I usually tip about 2 dollars per bag as well, but I would not expect to have that much,

By the way, how much are these valets paid per hour?
Are they paid like waiters? If not they are making a killing ha?

Valets and Bellman make a tipped wage... generally a few dollars an hour.

(By comparison, Luggage Assistance, a non-tipped position, makes a standard wage)

Not sure what the wages are at Disney resorts, but we live in Las Vegas, and my husband works for the Aladdin resort and casino, and I used to work at the Stardust. The man who unloads your bags is called a baggage handler, and the one who takes them to your room is the bellman. It is customary here is Vegas by most standards (not all) to tip the baggage handler around $5, and then the bellman gets around $2 per peice accordingly with how much stuff you have. My husband has been tipped in the other direction and gotten $20 for 2 bags, or he has even gotten stiffed  after taking the bags to the room, filling the ice bucket, etc. As I like to say, if you don't want to / can't tip, don't use the services. You can tell them that you want to handle your own bags. I also know that many people are confused about tipping and you can tell if they don't know or if they just don't care. I also worked front desk and used to get tipped at check-in if someone wanted a particular room or area, as we were the ones that assigned the rooms upon check-in. Not sure if people do that at Disney. Also mostly here in Vegas, we only tip the valet that returns or brings the car back to you, not the one that takes it. They all rotate out so it ends up even, as we have worked valet before also. Well I hope this helps a little and I know that Vegas is a little different, but I believe those are pretty much industry standards. The maids here, beleive it or not, seem to get stiffed a lot. For some reason people just don't seem to tip them. Just know that your tip is appreciated by most, like my DH who has to support our family off of people deciding to tip or not as the hourly wages are low. Thank you to those that tip, or we would not be able to go to Disney! Sorry this got so long, I hope you all enjoy your vacations. I wish I was going sooner!
