about your own state?????? this is very interesting. AWM asked me if I knew anything about RI because her son has a school project. So i (well we me and dh) thought we knew all kinds of stuff. as it turns out we knew hardly anything. We had a blast today looking up all kinds of things about Rhode Island. It was a great family day. We learned a lot and shared a lot with our 6 year old son. I'm not sure who learned more?! me. dh. or ds. we read a lot today, we visited a lot today and we found all kinds of things that we want to go and see now that we found out about them. We live in the littlest state in the union, but it's full of fun and interesting things. Nice to experience them with my son for the first time for all of us. We took lots of pics and lots of stuff to go with the pics. You should try it sometime. You'd be surprised how much you don't know. We have lived here our whole life and did not know lots of things. I have never been a big history fan (dh is a huge history fan) but I found myself into it. Maybe because it was about RI. or maybe it was the fact that the 3 of us were learning together? I'm not sure what it was. I encourage you all to give it a try! It was a super day!
Thank you AWM for asking us! You gave us the opportunity to make some really nice family memories!!

That's cool Holly! I would like to think I know a lot about Texas, but I know there is stuff I am missing. Heck, there is stuff I am missing in my own city!

Sounds like it was fun family time. :)

LOL!

We've done that same thing.... I know there are still some things I want to research about our own town... DH and I discussed trying to make it a every other month family adventure to try something new in the state...because after all there is more than corn in Indiana! :)

I'm glad you all had a good time... now, when do you plan to visit some of the things you discovered about RI?

i'm so glad you guys don't think i'm weird. i thought after i posted it that you guys would be like.....what a geek!:scared1:

we did one yesterday. one town over is the slater mill. it's the 1st water powered textile mill in the united states. i went there to take pics for awm and we ended up doing the tour. it was very interesting. even our little man was into it! so now we are planning what to go see next!
it really was fun!

We went to the covered bridge festival last year.. going again this year.. its a big ol' flea market over 1 whole county....but we found an area that have an old covered bridge you could walk through, plus a mill.. I'll post photos tomorrow...

OH, and I have some of from a state park where there is a place known as "sunset overlook"...
We are going to go to southern IN next spring to see the only civil war battlefield in IN... I want to start going to those.. those are rich in history...

DH and I were talking about exploring the state this morning. We both have been to the Alamo, but it has been YEARS. DD has never been. Big Bend National Park is another on the list- none of us have been there. So much to do in our own state!

i'd love to see that! love covered bridges!

sunset overlook must be beautiful! love to see that too!

they are totally rich in history. dh, bil and ds would love to see the civil war field. my fil has a flag from the civil war, that was someone in his familys.

see these are the things that i'd love to see. maybe i should do IN after i finish RI!:rotfl:

DH and I have done a lot of exploring in Washington, both together and with our families growing up. When we moved to AZ, we did some exploring but not as much as either of us would have liked. The 2 places we didn't get to that we regret are Tombstone and Canyon de Chelly. Now that we are in CO we know almost nothing. We have a lifelong goal of visiting as many national parks/monuments as we can, so that helps with the exploration.

We love history here too.
DH's Dad has his degree in anthropology. He knows everything about everyone their hometown of Williamsburg KY. He gets kinda frustrated when we don't know enough about our own.
The first two main towns - North, Waynesville; West, Lebanon - are full of history. In Lebanon we have the Golden Lamb Inn - its a hotel & restaurant. McCain & Palin spoke there on Tuesday.

LOL! I'm sure there are other things here too..but I love HISTORY history... family, life, everything.. (another reason for the history major!)...

We actually had one of my g-grandpas way back (*too early today to remember which one*) passed away during the civil war @ Andersonville.. When you drive down.. I believe you see the sign for Andersonville in GA...

I'm not sure about that---- I saw more corn fields then I could count last month. :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

Too funny! We have a Lebanon CT and it's full of history too, the French camped here during the Revolutionary War. Very interesting town.

And in Brooklyn CT there is a restaurant called the Golden Lamb.

Let's see, what do I know about CT.

we have 2 casinos that suck the money out of your wallet

we have some of the highest taxes in the country

you have to drive forever and 2 more days to get to the dang grocery store

if you live east of Hartford you don't count in the governments eye when it comes to economic development but they sure do like taking your money

Seriously though,
Places to go:
Mystic Seaport
Olde Mystic Village
Mark Twain house (very cool but in danger of being closed)
Harriett Beecher Stowe house
Gillette Castle
Mashantucket Pequot Museum
Nautilus Museum

Did y'all know Benedict Arnold is from CT? As is PT Barnum, Nathan Hale, and KAtherine Hepburn.

We were the first state to have a Law School, the first to have a telephone book, and Eli Whitney manufactured his first cotton gins here.

Well, that was because you were in the STICKS!!!! Surround by them!!!!:rotfl: :hippie: :rotfl2:

My trip into the city was great! Everyone near the wedding said things like go to this field and trun left and then at that field turn right. I must have been in the sticks!
S :)

We should do like a top 10 things to do in our state. That would be cool!

that would be cool!

Oh and Holly, one of my favorite zoos is in RI, Roger Williams. Gorgeous place!
it is very pretty there. 15 minutes from my house. and they have a natural history museum there too! and providence has a great childrens museum too!
