How much do window screens cost?

My dog scratched/ripped 2 window screens, and the landlord is going to replace them from my security deposit. How much should I expect this to cost?

I'm just wondering how much I can expect to get back.

If it's just the screen part that is ripped, you can replace that yourself. It's actually rather simple. I got directions online, bought the screening material from Home Depot for $10, cut it to size and them placed it in the grooves, pressed in the rubber strip and done!

Just do it yourself and show the landlord once it's done.

If the frame is broken, too and he has to buy a custom size, that's where it would cost you. Otherwise, they do make generic size screens. Again, you can pop put the one that's there and put in the new one. May be cheaper than the one the landlord will buy. Plus, if you show having responsibility for having a dog, and are proactive about fixing the screen, it will probably go a long way on your landlord/tenant relationship. :thumbsup2 :grouphug:

Too late, since I already moved out.

He said he's going to call the handyman to get it done, so maybe he'll do that and it won't cost me a bundle.

Our house was hit by hail two years ago, tore holes in the screens (hail was the size of melon balls). I think they gave us $4 or $5 per screen. I think that is what it costs to go to a place like Ace and have them done.

Our roofer ended up doing ours for about that price if I remember right.

The hardware store around here charged me about $8 for screens that were roughly 18" x36" I would guess, but a handyman probably charges $75 an hour minimum so your not going to be paying retail.

This is helpful info. We have a cat that alerts us that she's ready to come inside by jumping up on the window screen and clinging to it.. When it comes time to move, we'll be replacing those.:cat:

The screen for our front door was ripped in several spots, so I took it to the local Hardware Store (True Value, I think) and they repaired it for me. It cost less than $20.

We just bought a kit big enough for our front door screen and it was $13 at Meijer. It came with everything needed. It's SUPER easy to do.

Our dogs do this as well, and we replaced our screen after it ripped with one that is "pet-proof" that we bought at home depot. It was more expensive than the regular screen, but we ripped the old screen out, put the new heavier guage material in with a tool we bought that the person at Home Depot recommended and it has lasted 3 years. That with our 15 pound and 25 pound dogs jumping on it and scratching it every day to be let in. It was definitely the additional up front expense for the better material! :thumbsup2

It may cost $8 for True Value to do it, and you may have been able to do it yourself for about $2 a screen but you might not be able to get away with it being so cheap when the landlord does it.
I am sure he will charge alot more than it costs him and hold alot from your deposit. I have never had a lanlord but I have heard from friends who get taken for stuff. One friend painted all the white walls a nece beige after he got permission from the landlord and got charged for painters, base coat, white paint etc... He lost his entire $1000 deposit. Rent was $1000 a month and he had to give first last and security and lost the security money.
