Hi, guys!

If you can, respond to the poll to anonymously show what your e ring cost. (I know it's personal info and not everyone wants to say.)

Here's the story:
DBF and I disagree on how much to spend on a ring. He wants to spend a *ton* and I know that money could be used for better things. Part of the problem is my 2 SIL's and a coworker all have enormous rings. I mean, I don't know how they don't bang it against everything or have it fall off. We are both scrimping and saving to get ourselves on our feet and I don't think my ring needs to cost that much. He thinks that an average ring costs a certain amount. I thought it would be cool to do an anonymous poll on how much e rings really cost so he can see that there are probably big differences. Not every ring costs a fortune.

Thanks! :goodvibes

how much does he think it should cost?
my e ring was$2500 and we just bought my wedding ring and it cost $1500.

My e ring cost 1300.00 and we still haven't purchased our wedding bands but his will cost about 500.00 and mine is in the range of 500.00-900.00 it depends on whether im getting a plain platinum band or a band with bagets on it, haven't made up my mind yet. :tinker: pixiedust:

Ring price will also vary depending on what metal the ring is made of. For example, my ring is platinum and thus cost several hundred more than it would have had it been made out of gold. I'm allergic to gold, however, so I didn't have that option.

It also depends on where you get it, my e-ring is platinum, and three stone. He paid alot for it - he got it it in the diamond district in NYC. My DH paid cash for it, so of course, we didn't pay tax on it, and in a store, it would have cost him double what he paid for it. we priced out my wedding band, and in fortunoff's it would've cost me 2500.00 but we got it for about 1100 in the diamond district.

My DH and I picked my ring together. I am kinda picky  I did not want a diamond and i wanted it white gold. I finally found the perfect ring :goodvibes it has emeral cut aquamarine main stone, 2 little triangle (sorry i dont remember what they are called) aquamarines and little diamonds in between them. all set in white gold. DH paid less than $500. My band has 7 little brilliant cut diamonds insets and we paid $250. We got a bargain!! The guy that designed my ring did it for someone else and they didnt want it so he sold it to us for that price and it fits perfectly! So now i told you how much we paid, let me tell you how much they were appraized for... get ready... my e ring was $2500 and my band $900 i was floored! i asked the dude that appraized it why and he said it was the quality of the ring. So you dont have to pay a lot to have a nice ring on you but it is all up to what you like and what your personality is like. I am sure if you talk to your fiancee he will understand you dont want a mammoth ring. popcorn::

Oooh, good thread topic! My bf and I are having a similar discussion. He thinks a ring will cost a mint, so wants to save up as long as he can, but I've done some shopping around, and for what I want (very simple), I think we can do it for around $1200-1500. [Guess I should mention that we've picked a date for the wedding--April 23!!--but technically we aren't engaged yet. Yeah, we're funny that way.]

I have heard people say that the man should spend a months salary on the engagement ring.

Mine was about £800.00sih. It is an oval pink sapphire with a round diamond either side set in white gold. I only tried two rings on and this one fit straight away. We left the store as we'd only talked about getting married and he went back and got it without me knowing :teeth:

I did not want a diamond and I wanted a amethyst, this is my engagement ring:

We wanted matching bands so we got 18k white gold princess cut, channel set. Mine is engraved with "Sunshine" & Dwayne's is engraved with "Heffalump", our nick names for each other.

Congrats! You're engaged with or without the ring on your hand yet!

I heard two months' salary as a guideline as well, which seems like an insane amount of money for a ring. BF thinks 4000-5000 is reasonable, and I really don't. I used to think I wanted those $20,000 rings I saw in magazines and that my SIL's bragged about, but the more I think about it, the less I think it's worth it in the long run. You can still get a beautiful ring for a reasonable price and I'd much rather use the extra for something else.

KT27- your rings are beautiful, the bands are very similar to what I'd want, but that black and white picture is gorgeous!!!! It is so genuine and classy! And I love the crystal monograms in your bouquet! :cloud9:

Thank you! I was so happy with our choices. The crystal monograms & butterflies looked gorgeous in my bouquet. I'm happy I went with them.

My e ring is a 2 carat heart diamond set in platinum. my band is Platinum with 1 carat of smaller diamonds. We were together 10 years before we got married, so I think my rings are what I deserved for keeping the home fires burning...LOL

e-ring $16,000
w-band $2,000
Anniversary ring (2 carats, platinum) $8,000

He loves me lots!!!!!!!!!! :lovestruc

Wow, $4000 - $5000 is a lot of money! Mine is a VS2/E quality, quarter carat, platinum and diamond solitare from Tiffany's and it only cost us $1400-something.

i'm not engaged yet, but i do have an heirloom tiffany ring from my grandmother from the 1940's. it didn't cost me anything, but we recently had it appraised and it's much more than i thought it would be. when i do get engaged that's the ring that i want. i'm all about the least expensive option. i think it's a waste of money to buy a huge ring, i'd rather go on vacation with that money.

do you have any family members that may have heirloom rings?

I have told my BF I want to use my grandmother's diamond. When she died, I had it put into a solitaire necklace and I rarely take it off. If I had it in my engagement ring then I could wear it everyday and still be able to change necklaces! I think it is beautiful. It's about 1/2 carat and is a miner's cut. I know that's not a great rock, but it sparkles so much and is beautiful. He seems to have his own ideas, so since it is only a half carat I told him he can have other diamonds or gems in the setting. He still wants to finish college (I've been out for over 10 years!) and he wants to save some money but I am hoping the proposal comes soon! :rolleyes1 Let the planning begin!!!

Just remember appraised can be much different than actual cost. If you do some research, especially on some of the better websites that sell diamonds and e-rings, and especially if you pay cash up front, you can get a great deal. Many of them will let you have it appraised independently and then you can send it back if it doesn't meet your standards.
And your e-ring doesn't have to be a diamond, like KT27's beautiful ring, it just has to be something that the love of your life gave you!

My ring cost DH a pretty penny, especially considering neither of us were making very good money when we got engaged. He bought me the ring I had my heart set on (but thought that I would never get!) - a 3/4 carat Tiffany Lucida. I love my ring and wouldn't trade it for anything. Could we have done something else with the money he spent on the ring, of course. DH totally spoils me, and he knew it was the ring I really wanted and his logic was if he was going to be spending a good chunk of money on a ring, he wanted it to be the ring I wanted and would actually wear for years to come (in his family its not uncommon for women to stop wearing their e-rings after they get married). Every time I put my ring on, I still smile. I hope one day my ring will become an heirloom piece for our family.

No matter what your ring costs, I hope it makes you smile every time you put it on!

My engagement ring and wedding ring and my husband's ring cost about 3,000 total in 1993. I have a .71 carat VS1 E emerald cut and a friend who is a jewler made the rings out of rose and white gold.

I think you are smart to spend less on the ring and save $$ for something else. My diamond is not the biggest but I love it and it is so unusual (the emerald cut) that I still get comments on it.

mine is over 2 carats, but my DF's dad is a jeweler, so it kind of explains things...otherwise it wouldn't be so, and I wouldn't care, not that big a deal to me, not the important thing!
