We wanted matching bands so we got 18k white gold princess cut, channel set. Mine is engraved with "Sunshine" & Dwayne's is engraved with "Heffalump", our nick names for each other.

That is hilarious! Heffalump is my nickname for my DBF! I thought we were original in that! I really never imagined someone else having that nickname!!!

WOW! I am surprised that 35% was in the 5500+ range! My DBF and I have been discusing e rings, and I couldn't imagine spending that much on a ring! I was thinking 500 was expensive for me! I'm just not picky. I don't want a huge ring, I don't know, I can't justify spending more than 1,000 on a ring!

I've always thought jewelry prices were insane so I told mine that if he bought me an expensive ring, I'd turn him down because he obviously doesn't know me well enough to marry me. ;) I also suggested if he REALLY wanted to spend more than a few hundred, he should take me someplace nice to propose instead of putting it into the ring. So, he bought a very nice white gold ring with diamonds that actually was on clearance because it was "last year's style" for under $400. He also took me on a wonderful surprise trip to Walt Disney World and proposed at the Animal Kingdom Lodge. I was happy, he was happy, and I, of course, didn't turn him down. :)

Sometimes I call him "Lumpy" too...His license plates say HFFLMP :)

My E Ring is quite simple. Its a 18karat gold, with a solitaire diamond illusion set in white gold. Think in dollars it worked out around $1500!

my e-ring and wedding band combined probably cost my DH a little over 15,000, and appraises for much more. thinking back on it now, we could have a downpayment on a house with what i have on my finger. but i smile as well everytime i put them on. we'll get the house next year. all of our guy friends, DH included went with the "month's salary" on buying the e-rings..

I used to look at all of the big fancy rings and thought that was what I wanted. But the more I thought about it, the less I wanted them. I just kept thinking to myself about how heavy those rings must be and I was worried about wearing a small fortune on my hand! When DH proposed, we didn't have a lot of money. We searched and searched for THE ring. He thought he knew what he was looking for and I was completely ready to be surprised with whatever he chose. In the end, I sent him a link to a ring that I had found online and we went to peek at it that night in the store. It was perfect...I loved it...and he told me later that the moment he saw the picture of it, he knew that was the one. My entire set cost $1000. We bought just a plain band for DH...paid a whopping $60 for it! I love my rings! The sparkle so much when they are all shiny and clean! And to this day I haven't seen anyone else wearing the same thing...

This is such a personal question. To some people an expensive ring really is a waste of money. To others it's not. I am never comfortable with things like this because different things are important to different people. I would never buy an expensive car, pay a small fortune to see the hocky playoffs, or bother with a big screen tv. But I do love my ring which cost about $8k. :)

Very well said...
my DH designed my e ring himself..and while i've always joked with him that I would have said yes to a ring pop..its perfect ..totally different and so me...

My engagement ring cost $1900. It's white gold & plantium, three stones with 1 carot total weight. Its just the right size for me. I wouldn't want anything bigger or flashier.

The former owner of my ring paid $5100 - $5200.

DH paid roughly $1300 for my e-ring in 2002. My ring came from a Kay Jewelers outlet that sells second hand jewelry (my idea).

Since Kay Jewelers has a program where a diamond can be upgraded by the original owner (they trade up for a new ring), they have to be able to do something with the old diamond. Hence, the second hand jewelry case at the Kay Jewelers outlet that is marked at 70% off the original price. They sell diamonds from both Kay and Bailey Banks and Biddle (same parent company).

In terms of price, this outlet had a wide range of second hand diamonds. There were two smaller ones that I liked and cost less, and one slightly larger that cost more. DH wouldn't hear of buying the two smaller diamonds, and I wouldn't let him buy me the one that cost more :)

I have a beautiful ring (I'd guess about .85 carat) that I've received many compliments on and we didn't break the bank. The DeBeers commercials all say "a diamond is forever." Indeed they are (hardest natural substance known to man, no?). Buying a second hand diamond is a far cry from buying someone's used shoes at the thrift store.

We opened a Kay Jewelers charge card account to get an additional 10% off our purchase that day. We paid off the ring and cut up the card.

I am in the camp that believes that an e-ring should not cost more than what you can afford. The meaning of the ring is what is important, and believe me, you don't want to start a marriage off in debt over it. When you are married for a while and your finances allow, then let your DH buy you an anniversary ring.

If you don't mind wearing a second hand diamond (and it could be from a ring, a pendant or jewelry other than a ring; you could even have it placed in a brand new setting if you wanted to for not that much $) then either check out the Kay Jewelers outlet program, or check the local pawn shop (I would think you would only want to do this if you are knowledgeable about diamonds, or if the shop allowed you to have the ring appraised or had a return policy). With Kay Jewelers, I knew they were reputable, so wasn't worried.

To the OP: You and your DF will find the right e-ring. Best of luck!

ITA ::yes::

I think people feel differently about they way they spend their money and I would never pay a fortune for a luxury car, designer clothing, or on any other jewlery. We paid what we did because our priority was on this particular piece of jewlery and what it stood for in our eyes. We would NEVER go in debt for anything but our house and we didn't for this, but it is one of our most important purchases.

Ok, I'm not being nosy, but your DH makes 15,000 (or slightly less since it's minus the cost of the band) in ONE MONTH? :faint: :worship: :earseek:

I am loving this idea!

A "previously loved" diamond would be fine with me. I wouldn't do the pawn shop thing since the closest one to me is in Jersey City :smokin: and also sells bail bonds, etc. :scared1: and I know very little about diamonds, but I will have to look at the Kay Jewelers nearby and see if they have this program there, too. Thanks for suggesting it! :cloud9:

oh typo's, i mean double one monthh's salar (this is what i get for posting at work')

my e-ring cost him a little over 10,000 - i have a platinum band with great cut & clarity, a three stone ring.

I also have a three stone ring that I absolutely adore. It came from Kay Jewelers also but it was new and part of their Leo Collection. All told, we spent almost $5,000. When we married, we got matching gold bands and to honor our fifth wedding anniversary, we bought the Leo :goodvibes

There was a big difference in looks between the Leo cut and the regular three stone rings they offered. I will always love my ring!!

Hahaha , i thought the same thing...... if thats true spending 10thousand on a e ring is a drop in the bucket!

my e-ring cost $4,500. i didn't pick it out at all, he picked it out all by himself. had it engraved too.it's a karat and three quarters but the way that it's set on the ring makes it look even bigger. i think it's beautiful! the wedding band is actually a hinge, the e ring sits in the middle of it. it's cost i believe is $1,200 or so.

My e-ring was $1700. The center stone is a round brilliant .78 solitaire surrounded by six princess cut smaller stones--three above and three below in a sort of arch. It's set in yellow gold. I wanted an emerald cut solitaire with taipered baguettes on either side, but dh designed my ring himself so it's priceless to me!

Shan

I think mine was around $8K. And I forget how much my wedding ring was. $1600?

The thing is that generally, I'm totally fine with fake jewelry. :) I just got some cubic zirconia studs I *love*. But for this one set, I wanted something real and nice.
