Am in the planning stages of new car purchase. Want to know how much bargaining power one can expect to have on a new car that does not have any rebates attached. If MSRP is 30k can you expect to be able to talk them down 1k 2k or how much?
Or do you 'deal' with options added. Say 'give me the DVD for free' or something like that.

I know I am not going to pay the sticker price. My bank won't even loan the sticker price!

Thanks.

Cathy

We just got our Honda Odyssey for $100 over the sticker price. We went in and got one price, then my husband emailed the dealership and got a quote that was $2k less. Same dealership, two different salesmen. We were baffled, but took the lower price of course.

Totally depends on the make and model of the car. Some are getting even more than sticker, others you can get below invoice. 2 years ago I bought a new Ford truck for a $1000 less than invoice. Just this past week we bought a new Cadillac and were lucky to get $2000 off the sticker. Most people are paying the sticker price on this model. A lot of Hondas and Toyota you are going to pay sticker price.

I'd go over to www.Edmunds.com to research first.

Yes, go to Edmunds first. In their Twon Hall Forums, you can find out what others are paying for the model you want. I also think emailing the dealers is the way to go. Just email them you are ready to buy X model with X installed and will buy it from the dealer who offers the lowest price.

Edmunds and Kelley Blue Book (www.kbb.com) give approximate retail prices. It really depends on the car - our Honda Pilot is VERY in demand, so it's hard to get much of a deal on it. Our invoice with accessories was about $32K and we got it for $29,800, which just barely beat the Edmunds True Market Value price.

I got an email internet price of 29,800 on a Pilot.
thanks. I was just wondering.

Oh, duh, I just checked and realized you were the one looking at the Pilot! So, did you decide to get it? Hang on, lemme dig out my file... We got about $1,200 in options, making our base price about $28,600. (For the EX-leather, no entertainment or navigation system.) The invoice is $28,261, so we were just above that. But we had another dealership offering a $2,000 rebate, so the second dealership beat their price. (Without that rebate to bargain off of, I'm sure we would have been higher!)

Good luck! What color are you getting? :)

all I know is after you buy it, everyone tells you they could have got a better deal.

When I bought my 2002, fully loaded, 2500 Suburban - the sticker price was $47,000, I got it for $40,000. Way too much, but I really wanted it!(ofcourse I didn't let the dealer know that!):teeth:

My DH got a great deal on our last car purchase. He had decided on a Subaru Forester. He did his homework and checked out prices and options and how much he was willing to spend.

Then he checked into finding all the Subaru dealerships in our state or one state away. He sent an email to each of them spelling out exactly what were looking for. All the options we wanted and the ones that would be nice. He even told them the colors we were interested in. Then he told them that the last weekend of the month we were going to buy a car. He said if they had a car that we might be interested in, to send him the best offer. No dealing, no dickering, just the best offer they had. We would choose the best offer by a certain date and email our decision at that time.

The experience was totally painless. We managed to get the car we wanted at the price we expected without all the wheeling and dealing. I loved it!

By the way, the end of the month part was due to the fact that salesmen are trying to make quota and are more willing to deal late in the month.

Good luck to you!

When we bought our 2002 suburban MSRP was $36, 800 and we paid $28, 800. It was a very good. I should know I called every Chevy dealer in town and the best price I could get from most was $29, 998. Read the paper too and see what they are selling for in your area and tell them what you want and what you dont want. You have to be firm with the salesman.

Last three cars we got (one was for MIL) we went to carsdirect.com which gives you the price they are willing to sell for which is pretty low, then went about 5% lower. Worked all three times. We have gone about 2000-3000 below msrp.

It totally depends on how 'in demand' the car is and if they think they can get someone else to buy it for more.

Geez must be something about me and small towns!

since DH and I have been together, we have only owned GM vehicles, all but 1 of them was purchased at the same dealer. DH usually trades his trucks in every 2-3 years (cept for now with our Duramax diesel), and I usually do the same. I have NEVER paid sticker price, and the most we paid over invoice was $1200. Again, for DH's Duramax. We probably are one of the few that got this truck for under sticker, as it is a crew cab, fully loaded, in 2001 most crew cabs came with the 8 foot bed, ours has a 6...very hard to find. We did get running boards, a toneau cover, and brush guard with this truck that were added at the dealers that we didnt pay for..so that more than made up for the 1200 over invoice

Anyway- I think it goes back to dealing with the same place. Since DH's family is a GM family, we all buy our rigs at the same dealership.

I think there were certain times when 3 or 4 new vehicles were purchased at this dealer within weeks of one another, and they all went to our family....I know DSIL got her Suburban, and DMIL got her new Deville within weeks of me getting my Grand Am.

DH and DBIL's also bought all of their 1-ton work trucks from this dealer when we had the trash company...oh- and this dealer shows you the invoice..and I have checked on edmunds and they are correct

Just after 9/11, I bought my first brand new car. I was able to purchase a Ford Focus tax, tag, and title for over $200 below invoice with 0% interest and only $200 down. I made a great deal. But, I had done my homework first. I checked out what the car was selling for at dealerships from all over the internet. I checked out the resale value of the car on the Carmax website. I went in knowing that I most likely would get no great deal, but hoping for the best.

Now, the best time to buy a new car is after the next model year debuts. If you can put off the purchase until later this year, you will be able to work a better deal. Good luck. Maggie

We got our last two vehicles for $1000 under invoice (Chevy Silverado, and Chevy Prism). We checked out Edmunds, and did a little better than they said we would. We do always order, so I dont' know if that makes a difference. Our RV (Holiday Rambler)was 75% msrp, which is about as good as anyone else said they did on the RV bvoards. We're always prepared to walk out if we don't get the discount we want. In fact, when we ordered the Silverado, we waited three month for it to come in. By the time it came in, lots of people wanted one, because trailer season was starting. They tried to add "advertising" costs onto the truck, so we walked and re-ordered elsewhere (and by then the trucks were coming 4 door standard!). A neighbor bought the one we ordered and paid $4,000 more than our ordered price...and what we paid the second time around. So we got a great deal

My DH loves to uy cars. Last August he bought one of those new 3/4 ton dodge hemi trucks. It stickered for 38,500, he paided 32,500. If you can find a leftover 2003 model they are always willing to take alot more off.

I am not sure when I will buy. It will depend upon what kind of deal both at the dealership and with financing. I may wait until the 05 comes out. Not sure.
the 03 model does not come with heated seats and I want those.

I have only bought one other new car. It was not in that much demand, was cheap, and had rebates so was able to get it for much less. Unfortunately, Honda isn't too well known for their rebates and 'deals'. They aren't offering anything on the Pilot. It is too popular.

THanks.
Cathy

Yeah, we wanted to buy a 2003 model, but they were nowhere to be seen! We could only find two that were used that someone traded in for the 2004 model. When we were looking at 2003s, we were going cheap, for the cloth seats. But we decided to splurge on the heated leather, which is AWESOME! :teeth:

We don't have to "dicker" we buy our cars at Car Max and love it. The price on the vehicle is the price and it is always lower than the dealerships. Also, the department that buys your old car is completely separate from the new car deparment so you don't have any back and forth or "let me check with my manager" BS. I think next Spring ('05) we will buy a new Freestar to replace our Windstar and Car Max is the only place I will consider shopping. Also, the advice about buying previous year's models is great, I always do this. It works great for resale. For instance, I bought a Ford Escort (prior to meeting my 6'4" DH :p ) in '95 but is was a '94 model. When I went to resell, it had 15,000 miles less than estimated and I got a great price for it.
