How many tardies does your school allow

In our district (and this is for high school and middle school) - if you are more than 3 minutes late to a class, it is considered an absence.

After 7 absences in any class, both excused and unexcused, the student will need to produce a doctor's note or a court approval for the tardy/absence.

4 unexcused tardies and they get detention....which is Sat. mornings from 8-9:30, they have to come in their uniform and everything.

They began this policy because up until this year there were no consequences, and apparently one family got 87 tardies last year! When the secretary asked why they were always late, one of the kids replies "Because ya'll don't care...we never get in trouble." You better believe that policy was changed real fast!

BTW, at DD's school, if you are not IN your classroom when the prayer bell rings at 7:55, you are considered tardy.

I think it is really weird the way schools vary on policies- my daughter has a couple kids in her class that are late all the time- my friends son is late 2-3 times a week but they don't do anything for lates-they are just happy they show up at all I think! Absent days vary too- one year my daughter was out 30+ days and I had no problem with them promoting her. I even went to the school to question if she would be promoted due to all her days out but their stand is at 30 days they have the OPTION to leave a kid back but if they are up to the class level they do not so she was promoted with the other kids. This year she is missing 7 days in June due to us going on vacation- she will make it back for hte last day of school and they don't give me any kind of hassel at all.

I wish I knew...I teach 1st grade & I have one student who is late (sometimes just 10 minutes, other time...an hour or two) two - three times a week. One of those tardies is ALWAYS on a Monday .

It's driving me crazy. We do a LOT in the first 1/2 hour every Monday (daily morning work assignment, distribute weekly homework packets, fill-out Agenda planners, distribute reading group assignments for the week). She misses ALL of it.

I totally understand where you are coming from.. In our school to the morning is the most important part of the day.. My dd starts her preschool at 8:45am. The rest of the school starts at 8:10am. I can't tell you how many days I see kids stroll in for school the same time I take my daughter. I must have a different outlook than others.. I try so hard to teach responsibility to my kids.. I'm just hoping its working.

When I taught in public school, the kids hit a point where they could be referred to F.I.N.S. ( Families in Need of Services). This put them into the Social Services and Court system. They would appear. Some parents were brought before a judge.

One of my 6th graders (who should have been in 8th grade) had an advocate in our school board office. Anytime she was missing at roll call, I had to go call him. He would either call or go get her.

The private school where I teach now - 3 tardies = 1 in-school detention
3 in-school detentions in a 9 weeks period = 1 after school detention
3 after school detentions = 1 day suspension

For those that are habitually tardy, the administration holds meetings with the student and parent(s). Other consequences can be set on a case by case basis.
