How many potatos per person for mashed potatos

TEN POUNDS for 4 PEOPLE????????????
Are you sure you don't mean maybe a 5# bag or smaller???? That would be 2 1/2 pounds per person!!!!! That would be enough for about 10 regular servings PER person. So at 1/2 cup you are getting roughly 40 servings for 4 people. Even if each person had a whole CUP of potatoes that is enough for 20 people!!!!

There has got to be a mistake here. I just cooked 10lbs of mashed potatoes - it took two large stock pots to boil and then mash them. When I was done, one pot went into a crock pot - up to the brim - and we used that one for dinner. The other went straight into the fridge for later leftovers. The one we used for dinner, we still had a ton of leftovers. It alone filled up a gallon zip lock for leftovers. We had 7 adults at the table.

You eat over 2 POUNDS of potatoes EACH with your dinner:scared1: as well as other food

I have a family of 5 - 2 of whom are HUGE eaters ( slender and active) and a 10 pound bag lasts me at least 3-4 meals.

My MIL always says take the # of people eating - and cook that many potatoes plus "throw one in for the pot" meaning add one more than the number of people there are.

This of course is reffering to potatoes about the size of your fist or a bit bigger.

In a big group I would probably add one for the pot for every 4 people.

Are you sure you're not thinking about a 5 lb bag?

There are between Two and three medium unpeeled potatoes per pound. Do you really peel 20 to 30 potatoes for four people?!

One pound of boiled potatoes (no skin) has about 400 calories in it. Assuming that you peel and discard 2 lbs of potato, you'd end up with about 8 lbs. cooked. That's 3200 calories in potato alone, before adding any milk or butter!

LOL.. You're right.. I was just looking at a bag I have here and sure enough, it's 5 pounds.. Guess it's time to get new glasses again..:rolleyes1

Sorry - my mistake..:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

I do five pounds for eight people and we still have leftovers because of all the other sides.

You can nevah have too many mashed taters!!!!

Wow. I do 10lbs for 26 people and it's been fine. Never any leftovers but with all the other food no cares.

No mashed potatoes leftover??? Travesty!!! Potato pancakes, Shepherd's Pie, mashed tater casserole....how can you not want leftovers? It's the one time of the year we really pig out on mashed potatoes. Similar to it being the one and only loaf of white bread I buy all year-sliced turkey on white bread with Hellmans. mmmmmmmmmmmmm!

I would.. I do 10 lbs. for four people (3 adults, 1 child - a regular meal) and there's usually not much leftover.. Of course with it being Thanksgiving, you'll have lots of side dishes, so don't panic over 10 lbs. not being enough.. You should be fine..:goodvibes

Enjoy your Thanksgiving! :goodvibes

ETA: The old eyes are going.. Looked at a bag I have here and it's 5 pounds!!! :)

Needless to say, your 10# will be fine.. Enjoy!!

Ha ha. I was thinking to myself "Good gravy (no pun intended) that is a lot of chow!" but I figured to each his or her own. :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

I made almost 5 lbs today (left a few of the smaller ones in the bag) for four adults, a teen and a tween. I had plenty of leftovers.

My brother-in-law fixed 15 pounds for 24 of us and it was waaaaay too much! I'm making a note on my calendar for next year to remind him that 10 lbs will be enough.

It does really depend on how many sides you offer. Today my mom made the turkey, the rolls, the mashed potatoes and some jello. I made the stuffing, a salad, the green bean casserole and brussel sprouts. Nobody even touched the salad, and I have about 3/4s of the green bean casserole left. There are very few mashed potatoes left. My SIL is on another never ending diet and all the brussel sprouts were gone! Normally, my son and I are the only ones that eat them. . .go figure.

I have a funny story about mashed potatoes and Thanksgiving. The first year my SIL hosted. . .we had a turkey that still had red juices coming out of it. . .ewww! A small bowl of steamed carrots, a small bowl of corn. . .I'm guessing it was one can, and an average sized vegetable bowl of mashed potatoes. My ex is 6'2" and skinny, but he could put food away. . .fast metabolism. When the food got passed around he put about half of the mashed potatoes in his plate. . .assuming that there was a big pot still in the kitchen. . .because that's how I would cook. But that was all of them!!!

My Mom and I realized this and took about a tablespoon of mashed potatoes to be able to leave a still very small amount for anybody else. My ex felt horrible. . .but he couldn't get over the fact that that was all she made. We stopped at McDonald's that year on the way home because everyone was till hungry. . lol! I don't think you can ever have too many mashed potatoes. . .I know when I cook, I want enough leftover to go with all that left over turkey. Turkey without mashed potatoes? That's a mortal sin!

Make it all up. If you have too much mash next morning makeround patties of the potatoes fry them and put an egg on top its lovely.

My MIL always says take the # of people eating - and cook that many potatoes.

One of my family members uses this theory....one per person. She doesn't include the one for the pot.

Every year she runs out...it's become a running joke in our house to grab a seat next to the potatoes so you get them first. The ppl at the end of the line never get any. I would be mortified, but she never learns & won't make any more than that.

Thanks so much for that link. Thats just what I was looking for...mashed potatoes that I could make ahead of time...and they sound yummy :)

I just printed out the recipe and will use it for our Christmas dinner.

Karen

And they do reheat beautifully! :thumbsup2

Does anyone ever touch the salad? I've been to Thanksgiving dinners at various people's homes. people make a salad as an alternate, but no one ever touches the salad. I think people associate Thanksgiving as a cooked meal day. And the one day people go off of a healthy diet.

:lmao: My kids were asking me why I bought white bread b/c I never buy it! Yummm, turkey on white with a lot of Hellman's mayo. Already looking forward to tomorrow's lunch!
