How many points do you get when you join?

I was trying to make out a rough projected holiday plan for the next 20 years (don't know what we're having for dinner later but apparently we're going to Disney in July 2027  ). Anyway, I started off, year 1, on the assumption that I get all the points when I join up. Is that correct? So, for example, I buy 160 AKV points direct from Disney in (for example) July. As soon as the deal is done I have 160 points in my a/c? Or do they give me a use year of, let's say September and tell me I'll have my points in September? So when could I make a reservation?

And let's just say I wanted to borrow from 2008's points straight off the bat. Can I do that? Can I book a trip this coming July (assuming the membership is gone through) and take the upcoming September's points and the points for Sept 08?

What if I wanted to immediately bank my new points. Can you bank the points you get as soon as you sign up?

I think I'm more confused than ever now. lol!

you get your points at the beginning of your use year month.

[my use year month is october...but i still made reservations in february (prior to getting those points) for december.]

but depending on your deal, disney may include 2006 points in your purchase - which allows you to book immediately if there is availability...

and yes...you can bank or borrow points immediately.

Or do they give me a use year of, let's say September and tell me I'll have my points in September?

in the above case, you would be borrowing your sept 07 points to stay july 07. you could also use 2006 points, if you have any. you can't borrow from 2008 pts until you want to reserve a room after sept 2007.

This July wouldn't work because the first phase doesn't open until September, and you have to wait until "your" unit is opened before you can stay with your points. You can book before it's opened, (with the rules in place, 11 months at AKV, 7 months other places) but it has to be for a stay after your unit is opened.

Hey Deb: I just wanted to point out that the answer would be slightly different if you were purchasing SSR. They are currently selling a December Use Year and if you bought 160 pts today you would immediately get 160 pts from December 2006 (which you could bank) and then you would get another 160 pts December 2007.

The answer to your thread title is "as many as you purchase". The key is to figure out your likely point usage per year, and buy the number of points that will get you that vacation. Bear in mind that it could change and very quickly. We purchased 230 points to start with 10 years ago, because we planned on a 2 bedroom for a week every year. It only took us one trip to figure out it wasn't enough, so we added on an additional 150 points the following year. Through banking and borrowing, our 380 points had been adequate for our vacationing style, but this year we couldn't pass up the opportunity to get some 11 month booking advantage at AKV. We added on enough points there to get us a week in a 1 bedroom Savanna view room with banking and borrowing.

So look at the seasons you are likely to travel and teh points needed for a unit of the size you will require during that time, and let that guide how many points you need to buy. Just be prepared for the dreaded disease often caught by most DVCers.....Addonitis!

Disney usually offers some sort of incentive to assure the possibility of immediate point use - whether that is developer points, or current UY points. Right now, SSR has an offer like this. I am guessing AKV will have a similar offer in the future, as soon as SSR sells out (they already offered developer points to current DVC members). I don't think the demand for AKV is going to be so overwhelming that they can get by offering it without developer points - not many first time buyers are going to be happy waiting (and paying) for a unit months and month before they can travel.

When we purchsed SSR (in June with a Feb. UY), we got all our ponts for the current year, and then MORE points in a few months when the UY came up again - giving us double points that first year.

If you buy resale, you can easily end up with a contact that has been stripped of current points, and even has been stripped of borrowed points. You could easily purchase and have to wait one-two years before you actually recieved points - in fact, a similar contact just went up yesterday - no points coming until 12/08.

Thank you very much for all the responses. It's much clearer now.

I'm quickly realising that the more I learn about DVC, the more questions I have. Strange but true!
