I can find approx. times but I have no idea about time zones etc. Can a travel agent tell me the approx. flying time from Atlanta to Beijing or possibly L.A. to Beijing??

Thanks!

Just use the time zone function of the clock on your PC!!! (XP has a map)

Beijing is 13 hours ahead of the east coast.

According to Expedia, it's about 19 hours (through San Francisco)

19 hours, goodness help me. The adoption is going fine so far. We have had our first meeting and have been working on the paperwork for the Formal Application (financial statement, references, terms etc.) We should have that finished and will mail it in with our initial payment next week.

Next the home study will start and we will fill out the govt. (uggh!) paperwork called an I-600 plus submit IRS returns. Then we will be fingerprinted, background checked etc. The the completion of the home study and the paperwork is submitted to China, then the referrel then the travle (Hopefully around March of next year!)

We are getting so excited!!!! If I wasn't such a chicken about flying.

I'd plan at least 24 hrs.

My MIL flew back from the Phillipines last week, left there Jan 25th 7am arrived at DFW Jan 25th at 2pm.

It also takes that long for my family that has flown to South Africa, one of my nieces has been working in China for the last year but not sure of her flight times.

From Atlanta it looks like flights connect either through Chicago or San Francisco.

If you go through Chicago, it's 2 hours to O'Hare and then another 14-15 hours to Beijing. Plus you have to add in the time you'll spend at O'Hare.

If you go through SF, the flight to SF is 5 hours and then it's another 11-12 hours to Beijing.

The time difference between Atlanta & Beijing is 13 hours. If it's noon in Georgia, it's 1:00 a.m. in Beijing. Price for a coach ticket seems to run roughly $1,000 roundtrip. You'll also need a visa to travel to China -- but maybe the adoption agency has already covered that with you.

When I went on the adoption trip with my sister a couple years ago she went Atlanta to San Francisco to Seoul to Beijing. We left our home airport Sunday afternoon (EST- Monday AM China time) and arrived in Beijing and to our hotel around 1pm Tuesday local time - 1am Tuesday Atlanta time. I think our layover in Seoul was about 5 hours.
We are going again within the month for her second daughter but this time we should be entering China via Hong Kong.

Good luck with the adoption. There is a very strong families with Chinese Children group there in Atlanta - they even have a small Chinese Cultural Center there too.

Feel free to pm me if you have any specific questions.

I think there's a special visa for adoptions, but I could be wrong!

I flew from Chicago to Beijing, it was 13 hours to Seoul and another 3 or so to Beijing, plus a 3 or four our layover. In short, it's a looooooooooong flight! I was lucky, I was in business class. I was still ready to climb the walls though, I was so tired of sitting. I can't imagine what coach was like...

Good luck on the adoption!

My flight went from Orlando to Detroit, then Detroit to Beijing, via Tokyo. The Detroit-Tokyo leg was 17 hours, then another 2 to Beijing. It's a LOT of time on an airplane, that's for sure!

Beauty,
Just a word of warning. If the agency makes your arrangements LOOK carefully. Right before XMAS I got a panicky phone call from a friend. Her agency had booked her China to San Fran, San Fran to Chicago and Chicago to Nashville. The layover was fine in San Fran. In Chicago she had about 30 minutes. I helped her call the agency and change it. While I might could make a 30 minute layover, I didn't think it was feasible for her, her husband and three kids (one of whom was the new family member). I really think the girl doing the travel for the agency never actually traveled! LOL!

Just a side comment on flying.

I hate hate hate (did i mention hate) to fly. We flew from Toronto to Vancouver, Vancouver to Shanghai last April to meet my little sweetie (in my sig). Now i found that I talked to my doctor before we left and mentioned how i can't stand to fly and she recommended a medication for anti anxiety. It worked great for the upteen hours on all the plane rides. So you might want to go that route if you really start to freak out.

Good luck on your adoption journey, i will be awaiting all your trip news and news of your little one.

PM if you have any questions about anything.

Michelle

I was going to say it seemed to take really long when I flew to Japan years ago. It seemed like the never ending flight. I guess it depends on layovers, etc.

Good luck! :flower:

Thanks everyone!! Yep I'm scared to death! I've got close to a year to be scared though!! Don't get me wrong, I'll take a Xanax (or 10) and get on the flight for my daughter. I just am not looking forward to it. Hummm wonder if I could take a cruise ship...hehe.

Thank you for the advice on looking into the traveling. Our agency does book everything for us and we will most likely go in a group. I'm sure the group will meet in a central hub like San Fran. or Chicago. We will most likely be flying out of Jackson, MS. , Memphis TN, or possibly Little Rock or New Orleans.

About 17 hours, well that's what my boss said her flight was around timewise.

We just sent our visa applications to the agency last week in anticipation of or travel for #2 niece in the next 30 days. Anyway - there was nothing different about the VISA application and the travel department of the adoption agency told use line by line how to complete it.

Beauty- can't reply about flight times, but wanted to wish you luck! Also, did you see I posted yesterday to your previous post about the adoption tax credit? Let me knwo if not and I will hunt it for you. We had our taxes done last week.

We did know about the adoption credit tax and we are very excited about it. My husband's company also has a $3,000 reimbursement for adoption. How did it go for you with the tax credit since it is a credit and not a reimbursement.

Feel free to email me disneysbelle@cox.net since my pms aren't popping up and I tend to forget about them...LOL!

Beth -- good luck with your adoption process. I know of three little girls adopted from China, they are precious.
