How long to recover from lap chole?

I am the cautious type. Had mine out rather urgently when I was 22. It was scheduled a lap. BUT the surgeon nicked an artery, supposedly a strangely placed extra one that is not terribly common but not terribly rare either. Ended up having to open me up (opened me up WIDE!!) to fix it before I bled out too much worse. Needless to say, as I awoke in sooo much agony, I knew I was not going home that day. An open cholecystectomy is a much different recovery than a lap one. Obviously, as an RN, you know that, lol. I just am cautious enough to know that it COULD happen, and then what a miserable trip you would have! I personally would speak with the physician, see if heshe thinks you can wait till you get home. Just in case!

Either way, good luck, and have a great time on your trip!

The pain afterwards wasn't/isn't near as bad as what I expected. But boy those burps will get you. Somehow the worst ones were right as someone was walking by my room when the curtain was open.

The lady at work who had her's out 12 days ago said that today she felt wonderful. Today was her first day back at work after the procedure. She had a rough first few days after hers.

I'll try to keep you updated since I'm dealing with it all right now. Let me know if you would prefer me to PM you instead of posting here.

I had a lap chole in 1998 and my boss made me come back to work in 48 hours. Obviously it was crazy but it worked out OK. Barb

I would have knocked him out, dragged him to the hospital, had his taken out the old fashion way and brought him back in 48 hours.!!!!!!!!!

MMMM - I'd say it has to do with your tolerence of pain & wheter or not you listen to your body...I had it & was feeling pretty rotten for about 1 week, but still was sore @ the sites (5 holes for me) for a bit longer - couldn't hold dd to feed her on my stomach 'cause my highest incision was right where I'd hold her (above navel) so I had to prop her on a pillow---

If you want to ride the big rides then I'd say wait til after your trip - anything around your abdomen may still bother you (seatbelts) & I'd think you'r be jarred too much that soon after surgery...I'm not sure - I'd call your surgeons office & ask the nurse what they recommend...

wanted to add...

In my case (maybe not others since it hasn't been mentioned) I have been dealing with loose stools since having mine out - I CANNOT eat anything that I want oh I guess I could - but I pay for it by running to the bathroom---TMI SORRY - BUT anything greasy does this to me - my dr said that it would always be this way for me but I could choose to be on a medication that would help but I'd be on it for the rest of my life, so needless to say I don't take any meds....and I still eat greasy foods but I just know that within about 30 mins where I'll be headed & everyone I'm with knows as well & is patient - it took my dh a while to be patient & learn this....

Personally I wouldn't want to be dealing with those kinds of issues while @ WDW especially not knowing if your body will react like that or not...

I too was ok after just a few days at home. However my DD (12) had a investigative laparoscopy eight weeks ago and is still having abdominal pain. In fact we have had to see the consultant and our GP several times since. Our GP told us that it can take up to three months for some people to recover from it!
