How long to get from Anaheim to LAX

We're staying at the Hyatt Regency Orange County and our flight out of LAX leaves at 10:40am on a Tuesday in August. We have to drop a hire car back and then check in at the terminal about 2 hours before our flight. Google maps has the journey at about 40 minutes but I've heard that LA traffic can be a bit busy :rotfl: what time would you suggest we left the hotel to give us enough time to get to the check in desks?

Also we're flying from terminal 7 so would anyone know if we'll be able to grab some food for the flight there?

One more question... sorry. We're flying United and they're looking for $69 each to upgrade the seats to economy plus and $39 each for priority security clearance / boarding. Are either of these options worth taking

Thanks :goodvibes

Can't help you with the traffic - I'll leave it to a local to advise you on that.

Here's a web page with maps of the various terminals. It looks like you have some limited options for food in Terminal 7.

If it's a long (transatlantic) flight, the $69 would definitely be worth it. But if you're leaving from 7 instead of the Int'l terminal, you must be flying domestically. Where are you going, and how long's the flight? My wife paid the upgrade to economy plus for a Transpac flight (Japan), and thought it definitely worth it. But it depends on the length of the flight.

Thanks for replying

We're flying down to Orlando so it's about a 4 and a half hour flight

I'm hoping an LA local will write in with better information, but as someone who flies in and out of LAX all the time, I may be of some use.

The car rental companies are all way off site. (Think several miles.) Once you drop your car off, you will take a shuttle bus to the airport, and the traffic pattern at LAX is as bad as any airport I've ever been to (and we fly alot!) The United terminal is at the end of the shuttle bus run, and those busses have to crawl all the way around an oval pattern to get to your terminal. All by way of saying that you should allow more time than you would think to just process your car drop off. If it were me, I would assume it would take as much as 40 minutes to drop off the car and arrive at the terminal. It could go much faster, but we are better-safe-than-sorry people, so assume as little as 20 minutes to as much as 40 as a good estimate.

If you have a 10:40 flight and want to get to the terminal 1 1/2 to 2 hours ahead of your flight, that means you will definitely be driving through rush-hour, which is no joke in the LA area. Assuming there will be two or more people in your car, most LA freeways do have lanes on the far left for carpools. I know Disneyland is off the 5 freeway, but I can't remember which freeways you will connect to to get to LAX. (the 10? the 405?) All these freeways, however, are very heavily trafficked and will be clogged during rush hour (often virtually at a standstill).

If there are carpool lanes available, and you use the them, just remember that they can move very fast, then slow suddenly, so stay on your toes. Make sure a pretty confident driver takes the wheel, because you will have to move across 4 lanes or so of traffic when entering the freeway and when you need to get off at your exit. Allow plenty of time when exiting to make this move, since the carpool lanes are marked with broken lines to allow exit and entrance and solid lines when you can't move out of them.

If driving seems a bit more than you'd banked on, would you want to consider returning your car in Anaheim to a local branch of your car rental company (you might be able to find one that doesn't charge drop off fees) and taking the bus? There is a dedicated Disneyland bus service that would pick you up from your hotel and take you directly to LAX for a pretty nominal fee.

If you do drive, and a local doesn't respond here, maybe you could call your hotel to get a good estimate. The last thing we ever want to do in our family is worry about missing a plane, so we tend to spend more time in airports than some people, and we might allow more time than your family would, but I do know that 40 minutes in rush hour will be nowhere near enough time. Sorry if this has been :scared1:

Thanks, I'd rather know all this now than, as you said, totally get it wrong and miss the flight. I'm actually thinking that we might ditch the rental car a day or two early and get a taxi / shuttle to the airport. We'd save time with the rental drop off and not have the hassle of dealing with the freeways during rush hour :scared1:

If you're interested in transportation options, you might want to check mousesavers.com. If you decide to go with a bus to the airport, the one to check out is Grayline's Disneyland Resort Express.

Our flight back to Regina is at 9:00am on a Saturday. Would we have to leave Howard Johnson hotel at 5:30am?

If your flight leaves at 10:40, then you want to be there at 8:40am. You'll be going against traffic, but still, expect a little over an hour drive to the airport, so you are looking at leaving at 7:15/7:30'ish. Add to that another 40 minutes or so, and you are looking at leaving Anaheim around 6:30'ish or so.

The best way to get to the airport is to take the 5 north to the 91 west to the 604 north to the 105 west. You will be in the carpool lane for the 5 through the 91. Then get towards the right so you can get on the 605. You'll only be on the 605 for a couple of miles, and then take the 105 to the end. Get off on Aviation to take the rental car (if you do keep it) back to the rental place.

There is airport info in the info sticky at the top of the board (looks like I have to fix a picture in it:

When we have a Sunday 9 am flight out of LAX, we leave Anaheim no later than 6 am. We are parking our own car (not returning a rental) and fly out of LAX at least twice each year. The first time we did this, we actually were through security shortly after 7!

Saturday morning traffic is busier than Sunday, so 5:30 am sounds about right, especially if you are checking luggage. I might even go earlier, but I am the kind that tends to get to the airport early. -- Suzanne

The answer to your question completely changed when you said your flight is 10:40am on a weekday. That puts you right in rush hour. Ouch.

The above is perfect advice. You may want to add in another 30 minutes "just in case" there's something major on the freeway. I way I look at it, 6:30am is already way too early, what's another 30 minutes? :goodvibes

Thanks for you help guys, I think at this rate I'll probably get rid of the car a few days early and take a shuttle to the airport, that way we can leave the hotel about half 7 which would be a bit better than 6am ~ LOL
