My husband came down with stomach virus Tuesday night - was sick 2 times that night, went to work the next day (please don't get me started on that one) and it developed into the other end yesterday and last night. My dd and I are supposed to go away Saturday for the weekend and we are so worried once of us is going to catch it. We are constantly washing hands, keep him in the bedroom, disenfecting the bathroom , wearing gloves, you name it we are doing it. What are the chances it will bypass us? It seems every year he gets sick, while my dd and I don't - knock on wood! How soon does it pass through your family when it hits your house?

Ugh - sometimes everyone gets it right away, sometimes several days go by, we think we're safe, and then someone else vomits, and sometimes it's isolated. Good luck!

Is the illness contagious? How are these viruses spread?
Yes, viral gastroenteritis is contagious. The viruses that cause gastroenteritis are spread through close contact with infected persons (for example, by sharing food, water, or eating utensils). Individuals may also become infected by eating or drinking contaminated foods or beverages.

Can viral gastroenteritis be prevented?
Persons can reduce their chance of getting infected by frequent handwashing, prompt disinfection of contaminated surfaces with household chlorine bleach-based cleaners, and prompt washing of soiled articles of clothing. If food or water is thought to be contaminated, it should be avoided.

Well, right now I have a Puke Watch 2009 going on the conservative thread - we're at 41 hrs. and counting. :rotfl:

But...the incubation period is 48hrs I think so....I'll keep ya posted. ;)

Thanks! It has been almost 48 hours since the puke. I hope if we make it till tomorrow it means we will be ok...fingers crossed....wood knocked.....lysol, masks and gloves on!

Well I can say there is several times my husband has had it and thankfully I never got it. I dont mind nearly as much somebody infecting me with the standard cold/sore throat business...but please..keep other bodily fluid germs to yourself;)
If I even "think" he is sick. I spray down everything he touches with Lysol or some other type of disenfecting spray. I wash my hands A LOT more then normal...

I think it is contagious upwards of 2 weeks after the initial outbreak.

My DH had a nasty stomach bug in November. I thought for sure we were all doomed, but thankfully no one else got it.

I also heard somewhere that some people are more proned to the virus. I think it has something to do with blood type??

Depends on how many people you have in your family..........:coffee:

If norovirus, I have read that it can be contagious for up to 2 or 3 weeks from various sources.
People infected with norovirus are contagious from the moment they begin feeling ill to at least 3 days after recovery. Some people may be contagious for as long as 2 weeks after recovery. Therefore, it is particularly important for people to use good handwashing and other hygienic practices after they have recently recovered from norovirus illness.

So it is possible you could be exposed tomorrow or even next week.

I thought of you when I saw this thread title. :rotfl:

Good luck, OP. I have it on good authority (breezy's mom) that it takes just long enough for you to think you've dodged the bullet, and then it hits you. :hourglass Hope you stay well pixiedust: (that's special germ killing pixie dust :thumbsup2 ).

Thanks for the special germ killing pixie dust...and there are only 3 in my family.

Yuck! When we got it DS started throwing up on Thursday PM around 9. I got sick Saturday morning at 2AM. My MIL got sick Saturday late afternoon and DH started feeling poorly, but never got sick, Sunday afternoon. I was fine by Sunday afternoon and eating normally by Monday. DH was fine by Monday. My MIL has GI issues and was rough all week. DS had bad diapers for almost a whole week.

Good Luck ... I hope you don't catch it. I think it's safe to say that if you get to Saturday without it you will be ok.

That is interesting about the blood type thing. Me and my husband have different blood types, wonder if that is why he has gotten so much more then anybody else in this family:confused3

I had it last week and my husband was fine....until yesterday :guilty: I'm just hoping I don't get it back!!

Youngest DS started puking Sat. night, well technically Sunday morning at 1:30am. I got it Tuesday afternoon, followed closely (within hours) by DH and DD. Oldest DS hasn't had it. He's the only one at school today. I still have it btw. :crazy2:

Hope you are feeling better soon.. Just got back from Walgreens with Immodium D, Nausea meds, saltines, gatorade....put on my mask and surgical gloves and dropped it in the bedroom for him. He took the pill, won't take nausea med at same time although I am sure you can. He's started complaining so he must be starting to feel better - he's complaining why he has to keep bedroom door shut -"Hello....you're sick and we are trying to stay healthy for the weekend.....now get back to bed and shut the door - oh yeah, and spray the lysol while your at it!!
