How late do the buses REALLY run after park closing? I seem to recall reading that they run for an hour, but on a really crowded night at the MK (after Spectro and Fireworks, for instance) do they actually run much later? I know I've waited more than an hour for a bus. Do they just run until everyone waiting has been picked up, or is there a scheduled time that they stop, or...

The bottom line is, how long do I dare stay in MK after the fireworks waiting for the crowds to thin out before I head to the bus for ASMu?

There is no scheduled "last bus" time. The buses will run until the park is declared "clear" by a transportation manager. This means that the shops have closed, the streets are mostly clear of pedestrians, and the bus stops are empty. This usually happens a little over an hour after the park closes. Maybe an hour and a half on a busy night. So an hour is a good rule of thumb. To stay longer would be pushing your luck.

If you get out and there really are no more busses. Talk to the folks in the transportation booth and they will help you get back to your resort.

If they seem to be no help, take a quick walk over to the Contemporary, where busses will be running to the Downtown Disney/Pleasure Island area until 2:00 am. You can then transfer to your own resort bus from there. You might even find a way over to the TTC and can get a bus to your resort from there.

I have frequently stayed in the parks till they practically kicked me out and have always found transportation to be available.

What happens if the Transportation Booth is Closed for the Night? (which will close once the Park has been Declared Clear of ALL Guest).

Also while Disney say that Downtown Disney buses run untill 2am don't be at a Resort at 2 am because you may not get pick up or be able to make a Transfer to another bus.

The 2 am time is from Pleasure Island only, but there is a Last Call bus at 230 am at Pleasure Island, if you miss that then you have to take a Taxi back to your Resort. Sometimes Security will giive you a ride but they may question why your still there(at the park) before they do.
