How is life slower down south?

My son, DIL and grandson came to visit a few months ago. My grandson is 3 1/2 and my son and DIL are in the process of teaching him to say Yes ma'am, no ma'am, yes sir, no sir, etc. Every time you asked him a question and he answered with "What?" or "Huh?" they would correct him to say "ma'am?" or "sir?"

My boyfriend thought that was so nice.

And yes, men do love my accent up here although I have to say after almost 8 years of living here I have lost alot of it.

The conversation goes like this:

Man: You're not from here are you?

Me: Naw, I'm from Alabama.

Man: I thought so - I could hear your accent.

Me: I don't have the accent, ya'll do.

:rotfl:

Here's a good example of how the pace down south is slower than up here. I moved here and lived here for nearly 3 years before I went to Alabama to visit my family. I was at my brother's house with my mother and my nephew, my brother was at work and my SIL was out running errands with my niece. They live out in the country. We were going to a graduation that night, so there was nothing to do but just sit and wait at the house. And wait. And wait. It felt like. In reality it was only about 3 hours that we waited but I was going absolutely bonkers. My nephew was rollerblading in the driveway over a homemade ramp he made and my mother was on the screened in porch just sitting and relaxing and dozing on and off.

I was climbing the walls trying to find something to do, somewhere to go etc. I realized how, in only 3 short years, I had sped up to the pace of life where I now live.

I made a conscious decision that I didn't want to live like that. So, every day I consciously decide to take it easy, slow down, there's no big rush and hurry. It takes effort; it's like being the tortoise racing the hare up here. Sometimes it makes my BF mad if I go too slow, but he's learned to live with it. He makes fun of my stories and how long it takes me to tell something, but he loves that part of me. And he loves my family and the south and the pace of life.

Once time we were visiting my son and we stopped in a small, family owned convenience store with two gas pumps. My BF went inside to buy beer or a coke or something (he was amazed you could buy beer at a gas station) and he came out several minutes later laughing his head off. He got in the car and was going "I can't believe that!!!! You could NEVER do that in Massachusetts! I just CAN'T BELIEVE THAT!!!!!!!!!!" I said what?

He said the old man who owned the station was sitting in the corner of the store cleaning his hunting rifle. :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

He just couldn't believe it. He was also amazed that any store we went into, the people behind the counter actually looked up at you and said "Hey, how ya'll doing?"

Those are a few examples, to me, of how life is slower and more relaxed in the south.
