How intense is Space Mountain?

It's not that dark. You can still see the coaster, which does take away from the experience & it's really jerky - you know, just like real space...

Rough/shakey, no long drops, not very fast, mostly tight turns. Love it though. :thumbsup2

I live close King's Island so I'm used to ROLLER COASTERS like the Beast, Vortex and the Flight of Fear (a dark ride like Space Mountain but much much more intense with upside down loops).

Compared to those Space Mountain is like a kiddie ride! :p

Space Mountain in Magic Kingdom is the oldest of the Space Mountains, so it is a bit more rough. The ride vehicles are virtually identical to the new ride vehicles on Disneyland's Matterhorn Bobsleds, but the Space Mountain is not quite as painful.

I've never been on Space Mountain in FL, only in CA. I think I've caught a few pictures of each that hint that the ride is different? In FL is it a single-seater vs. sitting next to someone? Are there large drops? I'm trying to gauge if DS 9 will be ok if it is a single seater. We did BTM when we were there last & he was nervous (white knuckled the whole time), but he did well. I want to see if it is worse than that. Thanks!
~LOL. The average nine year old should be fine -- it is the older set that should be concerned with this one!!! :lmao: I totally love Space Mountain but it is very rickety and rough. Have fun! :cool1:

The worst past of SM for me is that it is really a rough ride, not smooth like some coasters. I always feel like my bones are rattled when I get off! However, my DD8 has ridden it multiple times and loves it.

It is really a rough ride.

Funny story - my hubby and I rode it last year and when he was getting in his seat he misjudged how tight the fit was and his legs were all tangled up and he couldn't fix them. (The bar was down so he had no way to fix himself.) The CM came by to do a check and he was like "Oh no you don't want to ride like that" and he undid the bar so my hubby could get out and re-seat himself.

I think we laughed about that rest of the evening!

You can see what a PP was saying about how low the sides of the car are. It is a rather jerky ride with quick drops.

I've been on it many times, but I'm not pushing to get on it anymore like I used to. It's rough.

It can be intense, especially when a snake drops from the ceiling into your car.

It is rough. My sister rides it with her eyes closed and complains that it hurts when we get off the ride, but she still does it every time because it's a blast.

If you or anyone in your family don't like drops, then get a FP. There's two lines. Left side is standby and right side is FP. The right side doesn't have the bigger drop that the left side does.

Sometimes they might bring some people from the left line over to the right side if there's not a lot of FP and the left line is long. That's what happened last time I rode it. My gf gets anxiety from the drop on the left side, so she was very happy we got moved over to the right side.

I thought the tracks were basically identical, just reversed..... :confused3

I know my husband and I think that the FP side is rougher than the stand by side. That could just be us, or the fact that we are getting older.

I agree with Canadian Mom. I hate it & don't ride it anymore. I might if they gutted the inside & re-did the whole thing.

I couldn't have said it better..... And yes, WDW is more intense than DL. It's like, there comes a point when you cross a line from "fun" over to "traumatic"....

They basically are pretty much the same. You can feel some of the differences throughout though. I just know that one of the drops toward the end of standby, the biggest drop, you don't experience that big of a drop on FP side.

Idk which side I prefer.

It is slightly more intense than BTMRR. My biggest challenge from a kid perspective is that they're not next to you but rather in front of you- this made for a very difficult ride with my daughter who loved all of the other rides like BTMRR and Splash- she got scared and I couldn't put my arm around her. You can reach them to touch their shoulder but having them next to you if it gets too intense would have made a huge difference. However if he rode at DL then he has a good idea what he's getting into. Go with what your gut tells you. Good luck!

It's a 2/10 for intensity. A five year old should have no problems on it, depends on the four year old, I would not bring a three year old on it.

I would disagree. It depends on the child. My younger (turns 5 next week) loved EE. Begged to go on over and over, loves splash, BTMR, etc. HATED, yes HATED SM. I held her shoulders the whole time but she said it jerked her around so much it hurt and got off crying. I found it jerker than I remember past rides as well. I know many others whose children 5-7 loves roller coasters but do not like SM. So I would not list it as a 2/10.
