How important are FP+

I am going to Disney for the first time since they implemented this new system. I have hit my FP window and can book them now but I am not ready to buy my tickets. I am waiting and hoping that they will release the Florida Resident Discover Disney tickets which for my family of five could save us over $100 on the cost of tickets. Am I already too late to get good Fast Passes?

You can book FPs now without already having purchased your park tickets??

No, which is why the OP asked their question.
Their window is open and they could book FP if they bought tickets now. They don't want to buy them now so they are wondering just how bad their FP options will be once they do buy tickets.

There are a couple hard to get (toy story, mine train, Anna and Elsa). But the rest are pretty easy to get late in the game.
Luckily, it's possible to ride/do each of them at park opening too so a FP is not critical

if you want the very popular ones you should book them ASAP. If you are not going at ropedrop and you want to experience some attractions with minimal waits, they are worth getting. You might have trouble getting many of the more popular ones on the same day but if you will be getting tickets at anytime prior to arrival you can probably get almost anything except Anna & Elsa, parades and fireworks or maybe mine train, unless you have a very large party.

I guess I should mention that my trip is at the end of Feb, so my window just opened. I plan to purchase them as soon as the Discover Disney tickets come out, or about 40 days before my trip, whichever comes first.

Thanks. I guess I was confused by the OP's phrasing. I thought perhaps Florida residents could now make FP reservations without a ticket, as long as they purchased them, say, within a week. That would be a decent perk for locals.

At 40 day out you'll be fine. Don't expect a problem other than Anna & Elsa. If you don't have a huge party, Mine Train seems gettable especially if you keep checking back if it's not there the first time. Test Track could be an issue with Soarin closed - would expect most of that FP traffic to go to TT but remains to be seen what really happens.

We have Ap and really dislike the FP+ system. That said we do use it. We waited until the day we arrived (early Dec.) to finalize our FP. Since the park hours always seem to be in flux during the holidays we were able to get FP for Toy Story and RRC - granted they were for 7pm but still good. We also don't have little kids so we don't use them on character things.

40 days you should have no issues with anything except Anna & Elsa and maybe Wishes or Festival of Fantasy parade. Unless you are very picky about times for Mine Train. I do agree it may be possible that Test Track will go to those who would ordinarily choose Soarin' for awhile.

I booked my FP+ about 45 days before my trip last month. The only ones I was not able to get were A&E, SDMT, FoF Parade, wishes, and MSEP. I had very limited choices for TSMM and TOT.

The importance of FP+ is pretty dependent on things like traveling party demographics, length of stay, parks you plan to visit, must do's, etc. but without question they allow for more efficiency regardless of everything else.

For some a good fastpass is Toy Story, for others it's Test Track, others it's Lion King, etc...all depends on your priorities and what days you plan to travel.

Our trip ended up being cancelled the first time around, and we had to rebook everything a month out. If you don't get something your first try, keep trying. We found things open all the time (like an Anna & Elsa FP+ that I snagged at 1 am randomly one night).
